MLB Day 165 2012

Only a handful of days left, and today there are just seven games on as one Chicago team made their game up while the other suffered a long rain delay. The first is the makeup game in...

Chicago, as the White Sox host the Detroit Tigers. Doug Fister and Jose Quintana are the inconsistent pitchers. Detroit got going in the third inning as Austin Jacksin singled in Avisail Garcia and Delmon Young singled both Gerald Laird and Jackson across the dish. Chicago pulled back in the fourth inning when Gordon Beckham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Alex Rios, followed by a 2-RBI Dewayne Wise single, scoring both A.J. Pierzynski and Dayan Viciedo. The Tigers took the lead back in the fifth inning as Young singled to knock in Miguel Cabrera. The White Sox edged ahead in the bottom of the fifth as Viciedo grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Adam Dunn to come home, and also Paul Konerko after an error. The scoring stopped here at 5-4. Nate Jones was in line for the win, Addison Reed shut the door for a save, and Fister was handed the loss.

Down in Florida, the Tampa Bay Rays host the Boston Red Sox. Aaron Cook and Alex Cobb draw the starts. Tampa Bay began in the fifth inning with Ryan Roberts reaching on a fielder's choice to get Luke Scott home. Boston took the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run Jacoby Ellsbury home run, also scoring Jose Iglesias. The Red Sox added on in the seventh inning as Mauro Gomez singled both James Loney and Jarrod Saltalamacchia in, followed by Ellsbury doing the same for Ryan Lavarnway. The Rays tried a ninth inning rally on a Ben Zobrist groundout that allowed B.J. Upton to score, but they got no closer and fell 5-2. Cook picked up the win and Cobb was stuck with the loss.

Staying in the state, the Miami Marlins host the Atlanta Braves. Tim Hudson and Wade LeBlanc are sent out to pitch. Atlanta opened in the first inning with Martin Prado singling to knock in Jason Heyward, followed by a three-run home run by Dan Uggla, sweeping in Freddie Freeman and Prado. Miami got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Rob Brantly singled to drive in Justin Ruggiano, followed by Bryan Petersen tripling to force in both Donovan Solano and Brantly before being pushing in by a Gorkys Hernandez triple. The Marlins pulled closer in the seventh inning as Carlos Lee singled home Jose Reyes. Atlanta extended the lead in the eighth inning when Prado singled, scoring Heyward. This made it 7-5, the final, with Hudson picking up the win, Craig Kimbrel tossing the save, and LeBlanc was dealt the loss.

Up in New York, the Mets host the Philadelphia Phillies. Cliff Lee and R.A. Dickey pace the game. Philadelphia started in the first inning as Chase Utley hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Jimmy Rollins. The Phillies added on in the fifth inning as Rollins hit a solo home run. This was it for the scoring, with the final being 3-1, giving the win to Lee, the save was turned by Jonathan Papelbon as his thirty-fifth of the year, and Dickey was pinned with the loss.

Into Chicago, as the Cubs host the Pittsburgh Pirates and a long rain delay.  Kevin Correia and Travis Wood are on the mound. Pittsburgh opened in the third inning as Starling Marte tripled to force in both Clint Barmes and Brock Holt, before coming the final 90 feet on a Jose Tabata double. This was all there was for the scoring, with the final being 3-0, the win going to Correia, the save converted by Joel Hanrahan, and the loss was stuck on Wood.

Out west, the Seattle Mariners host the Baltimore Orioles. Chris Tillman and Hector Noesi are the little-known pitchers. Baltimore led off in the first inning as Nate McLouth hit a solo home run, followed by Mark Reynolds singling in Adam Jones and Manny Machado did the same for Matt Wieters. The Orioles added on in the second inning with J.J. Hardy doubling home Robert Andino, Jones singling McLouth across the dish, Wieters reaching on an error to finish Hardy's trip around, and Reynolds doubling to plate Jones. Up in Toronto, the Blue Jays host the Boston Red Sox. Jon Lester and Brandon Morrow are the inconsistent pitchers. Milwaukee led off in the fourth inning with back-to-back solo home runs by Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez. The Brewers added on in the sixth inning as Braun hit another solo shot. This made it 3-0, the eventual final, with the win going to Peralta, the save tossed by John Axford, and the loss was stuck on Young.

Down in San Diego, the Padres host the Colorado Rockies. Alex White and Andrew Werner are the young starters. San Diego walked off in the ninth inning, winning 12-11 as Alonso singled to knock in Cabrera. Joe Thatcher was credited with the win while Matt Belisle was on the hook for the loss.

Back east a bit, the Arizona Diamondbacks host the San Francisco Giants. Ryan Vogelsong and Patrick Corbin take the hill. San Francisco quickly scored in the first inning as Buster Posey singled Angel Pagan in. Arizona took the lead in the third inning as Justin Upton doubled both Adam Eaton and Aaron Hill home. The Giants retied it in the fourth inning as Brandon Belt doubled Posey safely home. Arizona struck again in the sixth inning on an Upton solo home run. The Diamondbacks kept going in the seventh inning when Corbin singled Ryan Wheeler around, followed by Parra scoring on a passed ball. This ended the scoring at 10-2, with Corbin getting the win (and helping himself out with plenty of offense) while Vogelson took another loss.

Into California again, as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals. Adam Wainwright and Stephen Fife are called on to start. St. Louis established a lead in the first inning as Allen Craig doubled in Carlos Beltran, and Matt Holliday scored on a wild pitch. Los Angeles tied the game in the third inning on a two-run home run by Andre Ethier, also scoring Matt Treanor. The Cardinals rallied ahead in the twelfth inning with Jon Jay doubling home Matt Carpenter before scoring on a Craig single, followed by Yadier Molina walking with the bases loaded to force in Beltran. This was good enough for a 5-2 win, picked up by Shelby Miller, while Jason Motte tossed his thirty-fifth save of the year, and John Ely was pinned with the loss.

Finally, we end way east in Atlanta, as the Braves host the Washington Nationals. Gio Gonzalez and Mike Minor show alliteration while pacing the game. Atlanta started in the third inning as Chipper Jones singled in Michael Bourn and Freddie Freeman hit a sacrifice fly to get Jason Heyward home. Washington got on the board in the sixth inning as Ian Desmond singled to plate Bryce Harper. The Braves padded the lead in the seventh inning as Heyward grounded out to give Bourn time to score, followed by a 2-RBI Dan Uggla single to drive in both Reed Johnson and Jones.
