MLS 2018 Week 27

Ten games grace the schedule this week in MLS, beginning with nine on Saturday. First up...

The Seattle Sounders FC host Sporting Kansas City. Tim Melia and Stefan Frei protect the nets. Kansas City began in the second minute with a Diego Rubio goal, passed from Gerso Fernandes. Seattle tied it in the twelfth minute on a Raul Ruidiaz goal, made possible by Brad Smith and Osvaldo Alonso. In the twenty-seventh minute, Kim Kee-hee of the Sounders received a yellow card for time wasting. Sporting saw yellow cards for a thirty-second minute Rubio foul, dissent by Ilie Sanchez in the forty-third minute, and Ike Opara's foul in first half stoppage time. Seattle pulled ahead in the fifty-second minute on an own goal by Graham Zusi of Kansas City. The Sounders added on in the fifty-sixth minute as Nicolas Lodeiro converted a penalty kick. Seattle went down to ten men when Chad Marshall received a straight red card on video review for a serious foul, which also led to a yellow card for dissent for the Sounders keeper Frei. Seattle held on to win 3-1, with the man of the match being Ruidiaz.

Northeast to Montreal, where the Impact welcome the New York Red Bulls. Luis Robles and Evan Bush are the veterans in goal. Montreal led off in the thirtieth minute with a Rod Fanni goal, via Saphir Taider. The Impact added on in the thirty-eighth minute with a Bacary Sagna goal, made possible by Jukka Raitala and Daniel Lovitz. Montreal extended the lead in stoppage time as Ignacio Piatti scored, thanks to Alejandro Silva. This produced the 3-0 final score, with the man of the match named as Fanni.

Stateside, the New England Revolution bring in the Portland Timbers. Jeff Attinella and Matt Turner are set to start in goal. Sebastian Blanco of Portland had a yellow card for a nineteenth minute foul. The Timbers were forced to switch goalies in the fifty-sixth minute, with Steve Clark replacing Attinella. New England got going in the fifty-eighth minute with a Scott Caldwell goal. Luis Caicedo of the Revolution had a yellow card for a sixtieth minute foul. The Timbers' Lawrence Olum received a yellow card for his foul in the sixty-seventh minute. Portland retied it in the seventieth minute on an Olum goal, passed from Julio Cascante and David Guzman. New England had yellow cards for fouls by Caldwell in the seventy-sixth minute, Michael Mancienne in the eighty-seventh minute, and Cristian Penilla in stoppage time. The Timbers' keeper Clark had a yellow card for time wasting after Penilla's foul. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Olum as man of the match.

Down in Florida, Orlando City SC hosts the Philadelphia Union. Andre Blake and Joe Bendik are in the six-yard boxes. Orlando City opened in the ninth minute with a Dominic Dwyer goal, assisted by Yoshimar Yotun. Philadelphia tied it on a thirty-second minute Cory Burke goal, helped along by Borek Dockal. The Union pulled ahead in the eighty-eighth minute with a Fabrice-Jean Picault goal, via Haris Medunjanin. Philadelphia's Alejandro Bedoya had a yellow card for an eighty-ninth minute foul. Orlando City retied it in stoppage time on a Scott Sutter goal, made possible by Josue Colman. Derrick Jones of the Union had a yellow card four minutes later for his foul. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with the man of the match honors given to Picault.

Back north, the Columbus Crew SC welcome New York City FC. Sean Johnson and Zack Steffen are the solid keepers. New York City's Rodney Wallace had a yellow card for a foul in the forty-fifth minute. New York City dented the scoreboard in the fifty-third minute with an Ismael Tajouri-Shradi goal, coming off of Anton Tinnerholm. Columbus tied it in the sixty-first minute on a Harrison Afful goal. The Crew took the lead in the sixty-third minute with a Justin Meram goal, guided in by Pedro Santos. New York City had yellow cards for fouls by Ben Sweat, Sebastien Ibeagha, and Alexander Ring in the sixty-seventh, seventy-fifth, and ninety-third minutes, respectively. The Crew won 2-1, with Meram picked as man of the match.

South again for a second straight Texas Derby, as FC Dallas brings in the Houston Dynamo. Joe Willis and Jesse Gonzalez play in goal. Dallas started in the tenth minute with a Michael Barrios goal, via Maximiliano Urruti. Adam Lundqvist of Houston had a yellow card for a twenty-third minute foul. Dallas added on in the forty-eighth minute with a Santiago Mosquera goal. Dallas extended the lead in the fifty-first minute with another Mosquera goal, with the help of Victor Ulloa. The Dynamo got on the board in the fifty-third minute on a Mauro Manotas goal. Dallas answered with a Reto Ziegler penalty kick goal in the fifty-eighth minute. Darwin Ceren of Houston received a yellow card for his sixtieth minute foul. The Dynamo got one back with a penalty kick goal by Alberth Elis in the seventy-second minute, but 4-2 was as close as they got. Dallas won, with Mosquera leading the way as man of the match.

In Canada again, Toronto FC hosts Los Angeles FC. Tyler Miller and Clint Irwin guard the woodwork. Los Angeles saw a yellow card for a Dejan Jakovic foul in the eighteenth minute. Los Angeles struck first in the twenty-third minute on a Carlos Vela goal, made possible by Diego Rossi. Toronto's Marco Delgado had a yellow card for a thirty-fourth minute foul. Los Angeles added on in the forty-seventh minute with a Rossi goal. In the forty-eighth minute, Toronto's Jozy Altidore took a yellow card for a foul. Los Angeles extended the lead as Lee Nguyen scored in the forty-ninth minute, thanks to Vela. Toronto got on the board in the seventy-fourth minute with an Altidore goal, guided in by Sebastian Giovinco. Toronto saw a yellow card for persistent infringement by Michael Bradley in the seventy-eighth minute. Toronto got closer in stoppage time with another Altidore goal, with assists from Lucas Janson and Giovinco. Los Angeles responded a minute later to win 4-2 with Vela's second of the game, fueled by Benny Feilhaber. Vela earned the man of the match title.

Back in the west, Real Salt Lake welcomes the Los Angeles Galaxy. David Bingham and Nick Rimando are between the sticks. Los Angeles drew first blood in the first minute on a Jonathan dos Santos goal, assisted by Ashley Cole and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Salt Lake tied it on a fourteenth minute Albert Rusnak goal, via Joao Plata. The Galaxy saw a yellow card for a thirty-fifth minute Perry Kitchen foul. Real pulled ahead in first half stoppage time on a Damir Kreilach goal, passed from Brooks Lennon. Salt Lake added on in the forty-eighth minute with a Jefferson Savarino goal, coming off of Plata. Real extended the lead as Kreilach scored in the sixty-first minute, thanks to Rusnak. Romain Alessandrini got one back for the Galaxy in the sixty-third minute, with a helper from dos Santos. Rolf Feltscher of Los Angeles took a yellow card for a sixty-fourth minute foul. Salt Lake replied in the sixty-eighth minute on another Rusnak goal, set up by Savarino. Real padded the lead on a Kreilach goal to complete his hat trick, passed from Savarino. This made it 6-2, the final, with Kreilach earning the man of the match honors as Real curb-stomped another opponent.

Saturday ends in Vancouver, as the Whitecaps FC bring in the San Jose Earthquakes. Andrew Tarbell and Stefan Marinovic are the goalies. Vancouver was first to score in the twenty-second minute with an Alphonso Davies goal, assisted by Yordy Reyna and Kei Kamara. San Jose saw a yellow card for Nick Lima's forty-second minute foul. The Whitecaps had yellow cards for Cristian Techera's foul in the sixty-third minute and Reyna's foul in the sixty-seventh minute. Vancouver added on in the seventy-eighth minute with a Nicolas Mezquida goal, passed from Reyna. Magnus Eriksson of the Earthquakes took a yellow card for an eighty-third minute foul. San Jose got on the board with a Valeri Qazaishvili goal in stoppage time, set up by Jackson Yueill, but the Whitecaps hung on to win 2-1. Reyna was the man of the match.

On Sunday, DC United hosts Atlanta United FC. Brad Guzan and Bill Hamid are patrolling the penalty areas. Eric Remedi of Atlanta took a yellow card for a dive in the twenty-fifth minute. DC kicked off the scoring in the twenty-eighth minute with a Luciano Acosta goal, via Wayne Rooney and Hamid. Atlanta tied it on a Jeff Larentowicz goal in the thirty-ninth minute, passed from Ezequiel Barco. Barco of Atlanta had a yellow card for a fifty-first minute foul. DC retook the lead on a Rooney penalty kick goal in the fifty-second minute. Leandro Gonzalez Pirez of Atlanta received a yellow card for his seventy-first minute foul. Junior Moreno of DC had a yellow card for a seventy-third minute foul. DC added on in the seventy-seventh minute with an Acosta goal, helped along by Rooney and Russell Canouse. This made it 3-1, the final, with the man of the match being Acosta.

NWSL 2018 Week 23

The penultimate week in women's soccer has just one game between the bottom two teams on the table. The Washington Spirit host Sky Blue FC on Sunday morning after a lightning delay wiped out the original Saturday night plans. Kailen Sheridan and Aubrey Bledsoe make the starts in goal. In the fifty-eighth minute, Sarah Killion of Sky Blue received a yellow card for a foul. Washington got going in the seventy-first minute with an Arielle Ship goal, after multiple shots by Francisca Ordega were blocked by Sheridan. Sky Blue tied it in the eighty-seventh minute with a Killion goal, set up by Madison Tiernan after a clever dummy from Shea Groom. The final remained at 1-0, with Killion as the woman of the match. Also good for Sky Blue were Domi Richardson, Mandy Freeman, Christina Gibbons, Tiernan, and Groom. The Spirit's best were Megan Crosson, Whitney Church, Havana Solaun, and Bledsoe (five for six in saves).

MLS 2018 Week 27 Midweek

Four games on at midweek in MLS, beginning with...

The New York Red Bulls hosting the Houston Dynamo. Chris Seitz is mismatched with Luis Robles in goal. New York got going in the fifty-fifth minute with a Brian White goal, passed from Alex Muyl. Houston's Leonardo took a yellow card for an eighty-ninth minute foul. The final held at 1-0, with Robles (three-save clean sheet) earning man of the match honors.

Down in DC, United welcomes the Philadelphia Union. Andre Blake and Bill Hamid are the strong goalies. Jack Elliott of Philadelphia took a yellow card for a twenty-seventh minute foul. The Union opened in the twenty-ninth minute on a C.J. Sapong goal. Philadelphia's Borek Dockal had a yellow card in the fifty-seventh minute for a foul. The Union added on in the sixty-first minute with a Fabrice-Jean Picault goal, assisted by Sapong and Dockal. Steve Birnbaum of DC received a yellow card for a foul in stoppage time. The Union held on for a 2-0 win, with Sapong named man of the match.

Out west, the San Jose Earthquakes bring in FC Dallas. Jimmy Maurer and Andrew Tarbell play in goal. Dallas started in the eighth minute with a Maximiliano Urruti goal. San Jose tied it in the fifteenth minute with a Valeri Qazaishvili goal. The Earthquakes took the lead with a Qazaishvili goal in the forty-second minute. Dallas retied it in the fifty-first minute with a Santiago Mosquera goal, coming off of Urruti and Michael Barrios. San Jose pulled ahead again with a Magnus Eriksson goal, helped along by Chris Wondolowski in the fifty-fourth minute. Dallas tied it again on a Dominique Badji goal, made possible by Reggie Cannon and Urruti. The Earthquakes stormed ahead in the sixty-second minute on a Wondolowski goal, passed from Qazaishvili. This made it 4-3, the eventual final, with the man of the match being Qazaishvili.

Finally, the Portland Timbers host Toronto FC. Clint Irwin and Jeff Attinella draw the starts in goal. Marco Delgado of Toronto had a yellow card for a thirty-second minute foul. Portland dented the scoreboard in the sixty-fourth minute with a Diego Chara goal, guided in by Sebastian Blanco and Zarek Valentin. MLS 2018 Week 26

This week begins with a pair of Thursday games, as rivals around the league clash. First up...

The Chicago Fire host the Columbus Crew SC. Zack Steffen faces a lesser foe in Stefan Cleveland in goal. Michael de Leeuw of Chicago had a yellow card for a fifty-fifth minute foul. Columbus saw Federico Higuain take a yellow card for dissent in the sixty-fifth minute. The Fire got going in the sixty-seventh minute with a Nemanja Nikolic goal. Aleksandar Katai of Chicago received a yellow card for a sixty-ninth minute foul. The Crew retied it on a Niko Hansen goal in the eighty-seventh minute. Bastian Schweinsteiger of the Fire received a yellow card for a foul in stoppage time. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Cleveland the man of the match for going five for six in saves.

The other game on Thursday is a Texas Derby, where the Houston Dynamo welcome FC Dallas. Jimmy Maurer and Joe Willis play in goal. Carlos Gruezo of Dallas had a yellow card for his fifty-third minute foul. Houston saw yellow cards for Oscar Boniek Garcia and Darwin Ceren in the fifty-eighth and sixty-first minutes, respectively. The final held at 1-1, with the man of the match being Ibrahimovic.

The first of five Saturday games sees the Philadelphia Union welcome the New England Revolution. Matt Turner and Andre Blake are set to start in goal. Montreal got on the board with an Alejandro Silva goal in the thirtieth minute, made possible by Saphir Taider. The Impact's Bacary Sagna had a yellow card for a sixty-third minute foul. The final remained at 3-1, with Giovinco picked as man of the match for his brace.

Back stateside, Sporting Kansas City hosts Minnesota United FC. Bobby Shuttleworth and Tim Melia are the veterans in goal. Kansas City drew first blood in the forty-seventh minute with a Yohan Croizet goal, coming off of Johnny Russell and Diego Rubio. Minnesota received yellow cards for fouls by Francisco Calvo in the fiftieth minute and Michael Boxall in the fifty-second minute. Sporting added on with a Rubio goal in the sixty-second minute, guided in by Russell and Seth Sinovic. This produced the 2-0 final score, with the man of the match being Russell for his set-up work.

Out west, the Rocky Mountain Derby sees the Colorado Rapids welcome Real Salt Lake. Nick Rimando and Tim Howard are the elite keepers. Salt Lake began in the sixth minute with a Damir Kreilach goal, via Joao Plata and Kyle Beckerman. Brooks Lennon of Real had a yellow card for a seventh minute foul. Colorado went down to ten men in the ninth minute with Niki Jackson earning a red card for violent conduct. Bismark Boateng of the Rapids received a yellow card for a foul in the nineteenth minute. Salt Lake added on in the thirty-third minute with a Jefferson Savarino goal. Colorado's numbers dropped to nine men in the forty-fifth minute as Boateng saw a straight red card for another foul. Aaron Herrera of Real took a yellow card for his fifty-first minute foul. Salt Lake extended the lead in the fifty-eighth minute as Savarino scored again, thanks to Corey Baird. Real padded the lead on a Plata goal in the sixty-ninth minute. Salt Lake kept going as Baird scored in the seventy-fourth minute, with the help of Savarino and Danilo Acosta. Real struck again with an Albert Rusnak goal in the eighty-sixth minute, made possible by Baird. The final stood at 6-0, with Savarino's brace and assist giving him man of the match honors in the blowout.

Saturday ends in San Jose, where the Earthquakes bring in the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Stefan Marinovic and Andrew Tarbell are in the six-yard boxes. San Jose struck first in the seventh minute with a Jahmir Hyka goal. The Earthquakes added on in the eighteenth minute with a Magnus Eriksson penalty kick goal. Anibal Godoy of San Jose received a yellow card for a thirtieth minute foul. Vancouver saw yellow cards for dissent by Yordy Reyna in the fifty-first minute and fouls by Felipe and Marcel de Jong, both in the fifty-second minute. The Whitecaps got on the board with a Reyna goal in the fifty-ninth minute. Vancouver tied it in the sixty-first minute with a Cristian Techera goal, via Kei Kamara. The Whitecaps pulled ahead with a Kamara goal in the sixty-eighth minute, made possible by Reyna and Aaron Maund. This led to a 3-2 final score, with Kamara tabbed as man of the match.

On Sunday, the New York Red Bulls host DC United. Bill Hamid and Luis Robles are the gloved men. New York had yellow cards for fouls by Bradley Wright-Phillips in the ninth minute and Alejandro Romero Gamarra in the thirty-seventh minute. The Red Bulls kicked off the scoring with a Gamarra goal in the fifty-sixth minute. Zoltan Stieber of DC had a yellow card for his sixty-third minute foul, followed by yellow cards for teammates Paul Arriola in the eighty-eighth minute and Ulises Segura in stoppage time. The final remained at 1-0, with Gamarra the man of the match.

Finally, the biggest rivalry of all sees the Portland Timbers host the Seattle Sounders FC. Stefan Frei and Jeff Attinella are the keepers. Diego Chara of Portland had a yellow card for a twenty-second minute foul. In the sixty-fifth minute, Sebastian Blanco of the Timbers and Brad Smith of the Sounders each received yellow cards for fouls after the whistle. The Sounders got a gift from Portland when Julio Cascante bungled a clearance into his own net to put the visitors ahead. Dairon Asprilla of the Timbers took a yellow card for a foul in the eighty-seventh minute. The final held at 1-0 for the Sounders, with the man of the match being Kim Kee-hee, whose cross set up the winning goal.

NWSL 2018 Week 22

The final stretch is upon the NWSL, with this the final weekend before an international break. We play four games on Saturday, leading off with...

Seattle Reign FC hosting the North Carolina Courage. Katelyn Rowland and Lydia Williams protect the nets. In the twenty-third minute, Jessica McDonald had a yellow card for not retreating for North Carolina. In first half stoppage time, the Courage's Denise O'Sullivan received a yellow card for a foul. Seattle got going in the sixty-seventh minute with a Theresa Nielsen goal, set up by Jess Fishlock on a corner kick. In the seventy-ninth minute, Jodie Taylor of the Reign took a yellow card for dissent. North Carolina's Merritt Mathias took a yellow card for an eighty-fifth minute foul. The Courage tied it in second half stoppage time on a chaotic sequence in the box leading to a goal by Lynn Williams. The final stood at 1-1, with Lydia Williams as the woman of the match, going eleven for twelve in saves. Also strong for the Reign were Steph Catley, Lauren Barnes, Nielsen, Morgan Andrews, Fishlock, and Elizabeth Addo, while the Courage's best were Crystal Dunn, Abby Erceg, Mathias, Samantha Mewis, Lynn Williams, and McDonald.

Way southeast to Florida, as the Orlando Pride welcome the Chicago Red Stars. Alyssa Naeher and Ashlyn Harris are the American keepers. Orlando's Camila received a yellow card for a forty-second minute foul. Chicago led off in the forty-fourth minute with a Sam Kerr goal, via Yuki Nagasato. The Red Stars added on in first half stoppage time with a Vanessa DiBernardo goal, passed from Kerr. Chicago extended the lead as Kerr stole the ball from the Pride's Alanna Kennedy and scored her second of the game. Orlando got one back with an Alex Morgan goal, set up by Marta. The Pride had yellow cards for fouls by Shelina Zadorsky in the seventy-ninth minute and Monica in the eighty-second minute. The final stayed at 3-1, with Kerr as the woman of the match. Also good for the Red Stars were Arin Gilliland, Julie Ertz, Casey Short, Morgan Brian, and DiBernardo, while Harris (six for nine in saves), Carson Pickett, Marta, and Morgan led the way for the Pride.

Up in DC, the Washington Spirit bring in the Portland Thorns FC to Audi Field. Adrianna Franch and Aubrey Bledsoe are the gloved women. Portland started in the fifteenth minute with a Tobin Heath goal, set up by Hayley Raso. Whitney Church of Washington had a yellow card for a foul in the fortieth minute. The game ended at 1-0, with the woman of the match being Heath. Also good for the Thorns were Ellie Carpenter, Emily Menges, Lindsey Horan, Christine Sinclair, and Hayley Raso, while the Spirit's best were Estelle Johnson, Andi Sullivan, and Ashley Hatch.

Finally, the Houston Dash host Sky Blue FC. Kailen Sheridan and Jane Campbell are the young keepers. Houston opened in the twenty-second minute with a Linda Motlhalo goal on a rebound from an initial shot by Rachel Daly. The Dash added on in the forty-eighth minute with a Veronica Latsko goal, set up by Sofia Huerta. Sky Blue got on the board in the fifty-fourth minute with an Imani Dorsey goal after she made a steal against Amber Brooks. Houston responded on a difficult Huerta goal after a cross from Kealia Ohai went all the way through. Huerta drew a penalty kick soon after, and Daly converted from the spot to boost the Dash lead. Houston extended the lead in the eighty-eighth minute as Haley Hanson volleyed home a Kyah Simon corner kick. The Dash padded the lead in the ninetieth minute as a Sky Blue set piece was saved by Campbell, and quickly turned into a goal by Thembi Kgatlana thanks to an outlet pass from Hanson. The final stood at a towering 6-1, with the woman of the match being Huerta. Also good for the Dash were Taylor Comeau, Janine van Wyk, Hanson, Motlhalo, Huerta, Ohai, and Daly, while Sky Blue's best were Dorsey and Shea Groom.

The Seattle Reign FC hosting a smoky game against the Houston Dash. Jane Campbell and Lydia Williams protect the nets. In the twenty-eighth minute, Megan Oyster of Seattle had a yellow card for a foul. The Reign got going in the fifty-eighth minute with a Jodie Taylor goal, made possible by Theresa Nielsen and Jasmyne Spencer. Seattle added on in the sixty-first minute with a Taylor goal, assisted by Megan Rapinoe. In the eighty-third minute, Amber Brooks took a yellow card for dissent. The final stayed at 2-0, with Taylor as the woman of the match for her brace. Also strong for the Reign were Lauren Barnes, Nielsen, Morgan Andrews, Jess Fishlock, and Rapinoe, while the Dash's best were Campbell, Janine van Wyk, Allysha Chapman, Sofia Huerta, and Veronica Latsko.

On Wednesday, the Washington Spirit welcome the Utah Royals FC. Nicole Barnhart and Didi Haracic are the backups in goal. Utah began in the twelfth minute with an Amy Rodriguez goal, coming on a second attempt after a great Christen Press cross. Rachel Corsie of the Royals had a yellow card for a seventeenth minute foul. The final held at 1-0, with the woman of the match being Rodriguez. Also strong for the Royals were Becky Sauerbrunn, Katie Bowen, Katie Stengel, and Press, while the Spirit's best were Taylor Smith, Andi Sullivan, and Haracic (ten for eleven in saves).

Finally, the Portland Thorns FC bring in the Sky Blue FC. Kailen Sheridan and Adrianna Franch are the good keepers. Portland led off with a thirteenth minute penalty kick goal by Christine Sinclair after Lindsey Horan drew a foul in the box against Erica Skroski. Sky Blue's Madison Tiernan had a yellow card for a forty-first minute foul. The Thorns added on in the fifty-fourth minute with a Tobin Heath free kick goal. In the sixty-seventh minute, Savannah McCaskill of Sky Blue had a yellow card for a foul. Katie Johnson of Sky Blue received a yellow card for a seventy-fifth minute foul. Sky Blue got on the board in the eighty-fifth minute with a Sarah Killion goal off of a deflected cross from Domi Richardson. Jen Hoy of Sky Blue took a yellow card in the eighty-eighth minute for a late foul on Meghan Klingenberg. The Thorns held on for a 2-1 win, with the woman of the match being Sinclair. Also good for Portland were Klingenberg, Heath, and Raso, while Sky Blue's best were Richardson, Killion, Raquel Rodriguez, and Carli Lloyd.

MLS 2018 Week 26 Midweek

Technically only one game at midweek, but it kicks off a five-day stretch of games for MLS. This is the New York Derby, as NYCFC hosts the Red Bulls. Luis Robles and Sean Johnson protect the nets. The Red Bulls opened in the thirty-seventh minute with a Bradley Wright-Phillips goal, assisted by Daniel Royer and Tyler Adams. NYCFC went down to ten men in the fortieth minute with a straight red card to Eloi Amagat for a foul. Sean Davis of the Red Bulls had a yellow card for his forty-fourth minute foul. NYCFC tied it in the fifty-second minute with a David Villa goal, via Jo Inge Berget and Maximiliano Moralez. Anton Tinnerholm of NYCFC took a yellow card for a sixty-first minute foul. In the seventy-third minute, the Red Bulls' Connor Lade had a yellow card. NYCFC went down to nine men when Ebenezer Ofori's foul drew a straight red card, and Villa took a yellow card for dissent on that call. The Red Bulls saw yellow cards for fouls by Kemar Lawrence in the seventy-seventh minute and Andreas Ivan in the eighty-second minute. The final stood at 1-1, with Villa the man of the match for the shorthanded equalizer.
