NHL 2018/19 - Day 114

Eight games on as all teams are now officially out of their bye weeks. We begin with...

The Buffalo Sabres hosting the Chicago Blackhawks. Cam Ward and Carter Hutton are in goal. Chicago led off in the first period with a Drake Caggiula goal, his eighth of the season, passed from Gustav Forsling. The Blackhawks added on in the second period with a Patrick Kane goal, his thirtieth of the year, guided in by Erik Gustafsson and Caggiula. Chicago extended the lead as Duncan Keith scored his second of the season, thanks to Alex DeBrincat and Kane. Buffalo got on the board with a Jack Eichel goal, his seventeenth of the year, fueled by Jeff Skinner and Rasmus Ristolainen. The Blackhawks shot back with a Brandon Saad goal, his sixteenth of the season, helped along by David Kampf and Marcus Kruger. The Sabres got one back with a Jason Pominville goal, his eleventh of the year, made possible by Jeff Skinner and Zach Bogosian in the third period. Buffalo got closer with a Kyle Okposo power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Conor Sheary and Casey Mittelstadt. Chicago replied with a Connor Murphy goal, his second of the year, coming off of Kane and Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks padded the lead on a Kane empty net goal, his second of the game and thirty-first of the season, set up by Caggiula and Brent Seabrook. Chicago iced it at 7-3 with a Saad goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year, an unassisted goal. The three stars went to Kane, Saad, and Caggiula, while Skinner gets an honorable mention.

Across New York, the Islanders welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Thomas Greiss are the masked men. The only time a puck found the back of the net was Victor Hedman's shootout tally, which gave Tampa Bay the 1-0 win. The three stars were awarded to Vasilevskiy (36 save shutout), Greiss (41 save "shutout"), and Hedman.

In Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Ottawa Senators. Anders Nilsson and Casey DeSmith are the backups in goal. Pittsburgh opened in the first period with a Teddy Blueger goal, assisted by Matt Cullen. The Penguins added on with a Jake Guentzel goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, courtesy of Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang. Pittsburgh extended the lead in the second period as Bryan Rust scored his thirteenth of the year, thanks to Phil Kessel and Nick Bjugstad. Ottawa got on the board with a Bobby Ryan power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by Ryan Dzingel and Chris Tierney. The Penguins shot back in the third period on another Rust goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the year, made possible by Kessel and Jack Johnson. The Senators countered with a Mikkel Boedker power play goal, his sixth of the season, with a lone assist by Mark Stone. Ottawa got closer with a Matt Duchene goal, his twenty-first of the year, coming off of Maxime Lajoie and the goalie Nilsson. Pittsburgh iced it at 5-3 with a Guentzel goal, his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the campaign, helped along by Crosby and Brian Dumoulin. The three stars were Guentzel, Rust, and Crosby, while Kessel gets an honorable mention.

Down in DC, the Washington Capitals bring in the Calgary Flames. Mike Smith and Braden Holtby are the veteran goalies. Washington started in the first period with a Nic Dowd goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by John Carlson and Michal Kempny. Calgary tied it with a Mikael Backlund goal, his thirteenth of the year, going in unassisted. The Capitals retook the lead on a Dmitrij Jaskin goal, his second of the season, coming off of Lars Eller and Brooks Orpik. Washington added on in the second period with a Tom Wilson goal, his fourteenth of the year, fueled by Jakub Vrana and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Flames got one back with a Garnet Hathaway goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Derek Ryan and T.J. Brodie. Calgary tied it in the third period with an Elias Lindholm goal, his twenty-second of the year, assisted by Johnny Gaudreau and Brodie. The Capitals retook the lead on an Evgeny Kuznetsov power play goal, his tenth of the campaign, powered by T.J. Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom. The three stars of the 4-3 game were Kuznetsov, Brodie, and Wilson.

Further south, the Florida Panthers host the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Roberto Luongo draw the starts in goal. Florida got going in the second period with a Jonathan Huberdeau power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Keith Yandle and Evgenii Dadonov. Nashville tied it in the third period with a Roman Josi goal, his ninth of the year, courtesy of Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen. The Predators took the lead with a Viktor Arvidsson goal, his twentieth of the season, assisted by Forsberg. Nashville added on with an unassisted Kevin Fiala goal, his ninth of the year. The Predators iced it at 4-1 with an Arvidsson empty net goal, his second of the game and twenty-first of the campaign, set up by Forsberg, who got a sock trick, and Josi. The three stars belonged to Arvidsson, Forsberg, and Saros (27 for 28 in saves), while Josi gets an honorable mention.

Backtracking to Carolina, as the Hurricanes welcome the Vegas Golden Knights. Maxime Lagace and Petr Mrazek are between the pipes. Vegas began in the first period with a Shea Theodore power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Nate Schmidt and Paul Stastny. Carolina tied it on a Nino Niederreiter goal, his fourteenth of the year, guided in by Justin Williams and Justin Faulk. The Hurricanes took the lead in the second period on a Brett Pesce goal, his fourth of the season, going in unassisted. The Golden Knights retied it with another Theodore goal, his eighth of the year, via Ryan Reaves. Carolina pulled ahead again on a Jordan Martinook goal, his eleventh of the season, assisted by Brock McGinn. The Hurricanes added on with a Sebastian Aho goal in the third period, his twenty-third of the year, coming off of Williams and Jaccob Slavin. Carolina capped it at 5-2 with a Faulk empty net goal, his fourth of the campaign, an unassisted goal. The three stars went to Williams, Theodore, and Faulk.

Up in Detroit, the Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Jimmy Howard tend the twines. Detroit cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Gustav Nyquist goal, his twelfth of the season, made possible by Andreas Athanasiou. Toronto tied it on an Auston Matthews goal, his twenty-second of the year, passed from Patrick Marleau. The Red Wings retook the lead in the third period with a Dylan Larkin power play goal, his twenty-second of the season, powered by Thomas Vanek and Athanasiou. The Maple Leafs tied it on a Marleau goal, his twelfth of the year, via Matthews and Morgan Rielly. Detroit won 3-2 in overtime on a Danny DeKeyser goal, his second of the campaign, assisted by Nyquist and Athanasiou, the latter earning a sock trick. The three stars were Athanasiou, Nyquist, and Matthews, while Marleau gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Dallas Stars bring in the Minnesota Wild. Devan Dubnyk and Ben Bishop guard the cages. Dallas dented the scoreboard in the second period with an Andrew Cogliano goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Roman Polak and Miro Heiskanen. Minnesota tied it on a Brad Hunt power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Eric Staal and Mikael Granlund. The Stars retook the lead in the third period with a Tyler Seguin goal, his nineteenth of the season, via Mattias Janmark and Esa Lindell. Dallas iced it at 3-1 with a Seguin empty net goal, his second of the game and twentieth of the year, set up by Cogliano. The three stars were given to Seguin, Bishop (21 for 22 in saves), and Cogliano.

NHL 2018/19 - Day 113

Three games on today for the last day of bye weeks. We begin with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Tuukka Rask are set to start in goal. Boston drew first blood in the first period with a David Pastrnak power play goal, his twenty-ninth of the season, powered by Torey Krug and Brad Marchand. Philadelphia tied it on a Claude Giroux goal, his fifteenth of the year, passed from Jakub Voracek. The Bruins retook the lead in the second period with another Pastrnak goal, his second of the game and thirtieth of the season, coming off of Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara. The Flyers tied it in the third period with an Oskar Lindblom power play goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by Voracek and Travis Sanheim. Philadelphia won 3-2 in overtime on a Sanheim power play goal, his fifth of the campaign, made possible by Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny. The three stars were Sanheim, Pastrnak, and Voracek.

Down in New Jersey, the Devils welcome the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Keith Kinkaid are the masked men. New Jersey kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Nico Hischier power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, going in unassisted. The Devils added on with a Marcus Johansson power play goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Brian Boyle and Damon Severson. New York got on the board with a Mika Zibanejad power play goal, his eighteenth of the season, with a lone assist by Kevin Hayes. The Rangers tied it in the second period with another Zibanejad power play goal, his second of the game and nineteenth of the year, with assists provided by Mats Zuccarello and Hayes. New York took the lead in the third period with a Chris Kreider goal, his twenty-third of the season, coming off of Zuccarello and Zibanejad. New Jersey tied it on an Egor Yakovlev goal, his second of the year, helped along by Johansson and Hischier. The Rangers pulled ahead with a Zibanejad goal to complete his hat trick on his twentieth of the campaign, fueled by Zuccarello, who got a sock trick, and Pavel Buchnevich. This stood for a 4-3 win, with the three stars given to Zibanejad, Zuccarello, and Johansson, while Hischier and Hayes get the honorable mentions.

The Jets tied it again with a Mason Appleton goal, his third of the year, via Andrew Copp and Brendan Lemieux in the second period. Columbus regained the lead on an Oliver Bjorkstrand goal, his eighth of the season, fueled by Alexander Wennberg and Nick Foligno. Winnipeg tied it in the third period with a Jack Roslovic power play goal, his fourth of the year, with helpers provided by Tyler Myers and Jacob Trouba. Another two-game day here, beginning with...

The Pittsburgh Penguins welcoming the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Matt Murray tend the twines. Pittsburgh led off in the first period with a Riley Sheahan goal, his seventh of the season, via Garrett Wilson and Kris Letang. The Penguins added on with a Phil Kessel goal, his twenty-first of the year, assisted by Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin. Pittsburgh extended the lead as Sidney Crosby scored his twenty-second of the season, thanks to Dominik Simon. The Penguins padded the lead in the second period with a Letang goal, his twelfth of the year, passed from Kessel and Malkin. Tampa Bay got on the board in the third period with a J.T. Miller goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Alex Killorn and Ryan McDonagh. The Lightning got closer with a Steven Stamkos power play goal, his twenty-seventh of the year, powered by Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman. This made it 4-2, the final, with the three stars being Letang, Murray (33 for 35 in saves), and Kessel, while Malkin gets an honorable mention.

Down in Dallas, the Stars bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Linus Ullmark and Ben Bishop are in the creases. Dallas began in the first period with a Jamie Benn goal, his nineteenth of the season, coming off of Taylor Fedun. This held up for a 1-0 win, with the three stars awarded to Bishop (29 save shutout), Benn, and Ullmark (26 for 27 in saves).

Boston started in the first period with a Patrice Bergeron goal, his fifteenth of the season, guided in by Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak. Winnipeg tied it on a Josh Morrissey power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Mark Scheifele. The Bruins retook the lead on a Pastrnak power play goal, his twenty-eighth of the season, with assists provided by Marchand and Torey Krug. The Jets retied it in the third period with a Kyle Connor goal, his twentieth of the year, passed from Tyler Myers and Ben Chiarot. Winnipeg pulled ahead on a Connor goal, his second of the game and twenty-first of the season, made possible by Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. Boston tied it again with a Bergeron goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the year, fueled by Marchand, who got a sock trick, and Pastrnak. The tie went to a shootout, where Connor's lone tally gave the Jets a 4-3 win. The three stars were Connor, Bergeron, and Pastrnak, while Marchand and Scheifele get the honorable mentions.

Hockey is back, at least partially, after the All-Star break. We have two games today, beginning with...

The Philadelphia Flyers welcoming the Winnipeg Jets. Laurent Brossoit and Carter Hart are the young goalies. Philadelphia got going in the second period with a Phil Varone goal, his second of the season, assisted by Michael Raffl and Christian Folin. Winnipeg tied it on a Jack Roslovic power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Jacob Trouba and Bryan Little. The Flyers retook the lead on a Travis Konecny goal, his thirteenth of the season, guided in by Andrew MacDonald. Philadelphia added on in the third period with a James van Riemsdyk goal, his thirteenth of the year, fueled by Konecny. This made it 3-1, the final, with the three stars given to Konecny, Hart (31 for 32 in saves), and van Riemsdyk.

Across Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Penguins bring in the New Jersey Devils. Keith Kinkaid and Matt Murray are the alliterative goalies. New Jersey started in the first period with a Travis Zajac goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of Miles Wood and Steven Santini. The Devils replied on a Coleman goal, his eighteenth of the season, passed from Zajac and Will Butcher. New Jersey padded the lead in the third period with a Kyle Palmieri power play goal, his twenty-third of the year, powered by Zajac, who got a sock trick, and Marcus Johansson. The Penguins replied with a Matt Cullen goal, his fifth of the season, a shorthanded goal going in unassisted. The Devils countered with a Zacha power play goal, his eighth of the year, with a lone assist by Andy Greene. Pittsburgh pulled back on a Bryan Rust goal, his twelfth of the campaign, helped along by Evgeni Malkin and Brian Dumoulin. This only made it 6-3, with the three stars going to Zajac, Coleman, and Zacha.

NHL All-Star Game 2019

We're back with the 3-on-3 tournament format this year. First up...

The Pacific hosts the Central. Pekka Rinne and John Gibson start in goal. Central opened with a Mikko Rantanen goal, via Ryan O'Reilly. Central added on with a Gabriel Landeskog goal, courtesy of O'Reilly. Pacific got on the board with an Erik Karlsson goal, with a lone assist by the goalie Gibson. Central shot back with a Roman Josi goal, passed from Patrick Kane. Central extended the lead as Kane scored, thanks to Josi and Blake Wheeler. Central padded the lead with a Mark Scheifele goal, coming off of O'Reilly, who earned the sock trick. Central kept going with a Rantanen goal, his second of the game, assisted by Landeskog and Josi. Central continued with Kane's second of the game, helped along by Wheeler. Devan Dubnyk and Marc-Andre Fleury played goal in the second half. Central struck again with Landeskog's second of the night, guided in by Josi, who got a sock trick, and Rantanen. Central got another on an unassisted O'Reilly goal. Central piled on with a Landeskog goal, completing his hat trick with the help of Wheeler, who took a sock trick. Pacific got one back with a Johnny Gaudreau goal, set up by Connor McDavid. Pacific got closer with Karlsson's second of the game, fueled by Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns. Pacific pulled closer with a Burns goal, made possible by Pavelski. This only made it 10-4, as Central moves on to the championship. Points were distributed as follows: Landeskog, Josi, and O'Reilly with 4; Rantanen, Kane, and Wheeler with 3; Karlsson, Burns, and Pavelski with 2; and McDavid, Gaudreau, and Scheifele with 1. Rinne's eight saves on nine shots led the goaltending for this match.

In the middle match, the Metropolitan faces the Atlantic. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Henrik Lundqvist play the first half. Metropolitan started with a Sidney Crosby goal, coming off of Mathew Barzal. Metropolitan added on with a Seth Jones goal, via Kyle Palmieri and Cam Atkinson. Atlantic got on the board with a Jack Eichel goal, courtesy of David Pastrnak. Atlantic tied it with a Steven Stamkos goal, guided in by John Tavares. Metropolitan retook the lead with an unassisted Jones goal, his second of the game. Jimmy Howard and Braden Holtby took over in goal in the second half. Atlantic tied it on a Jeff Skinner goal, helped along by Pastrnak. Atlantic pulled ahead with a Tavares goal, fueled by Keith Yandle. Metropolitan tied it again with a Crosby goal, his second of the game, made possible by Kris Letang. Metropolitan took the lead with a Letang goal, going in unassisted. Metropolitan extended the lead as Sebastian Aho scored, thanks to Claude Giroux. Metropolin iced it at 7-4 with a Cam Atkinson empty net goal, set up by Crosby. The point distribution saw 3 for Crosby, 2 each for Jones, Atkinson, Letang, Tavares, and Pastrnak, and 1 each for Barzal, Palmieri, Aho, Giroux, Skinner, Eichel, Stamkos, and Yandle. Holtby was the top goalie with 11 saves on 13 shots.

The finale sees the Central meet the Metropolitan. Henrik Lundqvist and Devan Dubnyk draw the starts in goal. Metropolitan led off with a Barzal goal, via Letang and Crosby. Metropolitan added on with a Giroux goal, made possible by John Carlson. Metropolitan extended the lead as Letang scored, with the help of Barzal and Crosby. Metropolitan padded the lead on a Palmieri goal, helped along by Jones and Aho. Metropolitan kept going with a Crosby goal, with a lone helper by Barzal. In the second half, Braden Holtby and Pekka Rinne played goal. Central got on the board with a Landeskog goal, coming off of O'Reilly. Central got closer with a Rantanen goal, fueled by Josi. Metropolitan replied with a Crosby goal, his second of the game, made possible by Barzal, who earned a sock trick. Central answered on an O'Reilly goal, powered by Josi and Kane. Metropolitan pushed back with an Aho goal, courtesy of Atkinson. Metropolitan continued with an unassisted Atkinson goal. Metropolitan struck again with a Barzal empty net goal, set up by Crosby and Letang, the former earning the sock trick. Central clawed back on Rantanen's second of the game, dished from Landeskog and O'Reilly. Central chipped away with a Wheeler goal, via Rantanen and Landeskog. Metropolitan capped it at 10-5 with an Atkinson empty netter with the help of Jones. The points broke down as five each for Barzal and Crosby, three each for Atkinson, Letang, O'Reilly, Landeskog, and Rantanen, two each for Aho, Jones, and Josi, and Palmieri, Giroux, Carlson, Wheeler, and Kane taking one each. Crosby's eight points in the two games made him the All-Star Game MVP.

Six games on for the last day before the All-Star break. We begin with...

The Montreal Canadiens hosting the Arizona Coyotes. Calvin Pickard and Carey Price are the goalies. Montreal started in the first period with a Jonathan Drouin power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Tomas Tatar. Arizona tied it on a Conor Garland power play goal in the second period, his ninth of the year, with assists provided by Nick Cousins and Clayton Keller. The Canadiens retook the lead with a Mike Reilly goal, his third of the campaign, passed from Jeff Petry and Charles Hudon. This stood for a 2-1 win, with the three stars given to Price (30 for 31 in saves), Reilly, and Drouin.

In Ontario, the Toronto Maple Leafs welcome the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby and Frederik Andersen tend the twines. Stateside, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the Minnesota Wild. Devan Dubnyk faces a lesser foe in Philipp Grubauer in goal. Colorado led off in the first period with a Carl Soderberg goal, his seventeenth of the season, via Colin Wilson and Matt Calvert. Minnesota tied it on an Eric Staal goal, his sixteenth of the year, fueled by Charlie Coyle. The Avalanche retook the lead on a Tyson Barrie power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. The Wild tied it again with a Jared Spurgeon goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Ryan Suter and Jason Zucker. Minnesota took the lead in the second period on another Staal power play goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the season, with helpers from Mikael Granlund and Pontus Aberg. The Wild added on with a Coyle goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Zach Parise and Staal. Minnesota extended the lead as Suter scored his sixth of the season on the power play, thanks to Granlund and Aberg. The three stars of the 5-2 game were Staal, Coyle, and Suter, while Granlund and Aberg get the honorable mentions.

Down in California, the Anaheim Ducks host the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and John Gibson draw the starts in goal. Anaheim began in the first period with a Daniel Sprong goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Ryan Getzlaf and Hampus Lindholm. St. Louis tied it on a Vladimir Tarasenko goal, his seventeenth of the year, via Brayden Schenn and Ryan O'Reilly. The Blues took the lead in the second period with a Zach Sanford goal, his sixth of the season, going in unassisted. St. Louis added on with an Oskar Sundqvist goal, his tenth of the year, guided in by Pat Maroon and Sanford. The Blues extended the lead as Tyler Bozak scored his seventh of the season, with the help of Jaden Schwartz and Colton Parayko. St. Louis padded the lead on a Sammy Blais goal, his second of the year, courtesy of MacKenzie MacEachern and Carl Gunnarsson. This produced the 5-1 final score, with the three stars given to Sanford, Binnington (12 for 13 in saves), and Tarasenko.

Backtracking to Nevada, where the Vegas Golden Knights welcome the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros is mismatched with Marc-Andre Fleury in goal. Vegas struck first in the first period with a Max Pacioretty goal, his fifteenth of the season, helped along by Alex Tuch and Paul Stastny. Nashville tied it in the second period with a Ryan Johansen goal, his ninth of the year, going in unassisted. The Predators took the lead with a Nick Bonino goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Austin Watson and Ryan Ellis. This held up for a 2-1 win, with the three stars being Saros (47 for 48 in saves), Bonino, and Johansen.

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. Alex Nedeljkovic opposes Jacob Markstrom in goal. Carolina got going in the second period with a Nino Niederreiter power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho. Vancouver got on the board with a Josh Leivo goal, his ninth of the season, passed from Troy Stecher and Bo Horvat. The Canucks took the lead with a Sven Baertschi goal, his eighth of the year, coming off of Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser. The Hurricanes tied it on a Greg McKegg goal, his third of the season, guided in by Saku Maenalanen and Dougie Hamilton. Carolina pulled ahead with a Niederreiter goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the year, via Aho. The Hurricanes added on with a Hamilton goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Teravainen. Carolina extended the lead as Teravainen scored his eleventh of the year, thanks to McKegg and Jaccob Slavin. This remained as the eventual 5-2 final score, with the three stars awarded to Niederreiter, Aho, and Teravainen, while McKegg and Hamilton get honorable mentions.
