NHL 2022-23 - Day 119

There's five games on tonight, beginning with...

The Ottawa Senators hosting the Calgary Flames. Jacob Markstrom faces a lesser foe in Mads Sogaard in goal. Ottawa began in the first period with a Brady Tkachuk goal, his twenty-first of the season, via Tim Stutzle and Travis Hamonic. Calgary tied it on a Dillon Dube power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, powered by Noah Hanifin and Jonathan Huberdeau. The Flames took the lead in the second period with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his twenty-second of the season, made possible by MacKenzie Weegar. Calgary added on in the third period with a Dube goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the year, passed from Toffoli and Chris Tanev. The Senators got one back with a Drake Batherson goal, his sixteenth of the season, helped along by Stutzle and Shane Pinto. Ottawa tied it on an Alex DeBrincat goal, his eighteenth of the year, guided in by Stutzle and Erik Brannstrom. The Senators won 4-3 in overtime with a Stutzle goal, his twenty-third of the campaign, with helpers from DeBrincat and Tkachuk. The three stars were Stutzle, DeBrincat, and Tkachuk, while Dube and Toffoli get the honorable mentions. 

Down in Nashville, the Predators welcome the Arizona Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka and Kevin Lankinen are in goal. Arizona led off in the first period with a Nick Schmaltz goal, his fourteenth of the season, coming off of Clayton Keller. Nashville tied it in the second period with a Roman Josi power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Mikael Granlund and Matt Duchene. The Predators took the lead with a Colton Sissons goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Yakov Trenin and Tanner Jeannot. The Coyotes retied it on a Lawson Crouse power play goal, his eighteenth of the year, with assists provided by Matias Maccelli and J.J. Moser. Arizona pulled ahead in the third period with a Crouse goal, his second of the game and nineteenth of the season, fueled by Maccelli and Moser. The Coyotes iced it at 4-2 with a Christian Fischer empty net goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Keller and Travis Boyd. The three stars went to Crouse, Maccelli, and Moser, while Keller gets an honorable mention. 

Up in Minnesota, where the Wild host the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Filip Gustavsson are between the pipes. Florida got going in the second period with an Eetu Luostarinen goal, his twelfth of the season, assisted by Gustav Forsling and Nick Cousins. Minnesota tied it on a Kirill Kaprizov goal, his thirtieth of the year, courtesy of Mats Zuccarello and Calen Addison. The tie went to a shootout, where Anton Lundell and Aleksander Barkov lifted the Panthers 2-1 over Zuccarello and the Wild. The three stars were Bobrovsky (27 for 28 in saves), Gustavsson, and Zuccarello. 

Out west, the Vancouver Canucks bring in the Detroit Red Wings. Ville Husso and Collin Delia start in goal. Detroit opened in the first period with a Dylan Larkin goal, his nineteenth of the season, via Moritz Seider. The Red Wings added on with a Larkin power play goal, his second of the game and twentieth of the year, powered by Robby Fabbri and Tyler Bertuzzi. Vancouver got on the board in the second period with a Sheldon Dries goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Conor Garland and Ethan Bear. Detroit answered with a Fabbri goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Michael Rasmussen and Andrew Copp. The Red Wings extended the lead in the third period as Gustav Lindstrom scored, thanks to Rasmussen. Detroit padded the lead on a Pius Suter goal, his seventh of the season, helped along by Oskar Sundqvist and Lindstrom. The Red Wings continued with a Jonatan Berggren goal, his eleventh of the year, with helpers from Joe Veleno and Filip Hronek. The final was 6-1, with the three stars going to Larkin, Fabbri, and Lindstrom, while Rasmussen gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the Buffalo Sabres. Craig Anderson and Pheonix Copley patrol the creases. Los Angeles continued in the third period with an Arvidsson power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, with assists provided by Danault and Sean Durzi. Buffalo got on the board with a Dylan Cozens goal, his eighteenth of the year, guided in by Victor Olofsson and Casey Mittelstadt. NHL 2022-23 - Day 118

There's four games on today, all early. First up...

The Montreal Canadiens host the Edmonton Oilers. Stuart Skinner and Jake Allen are in goal. Montreal started in the first period with an Alex Belzile goal, via Michael Pezzetta and Jesse Ylonen. The Canadiens added on with a Jordan Harris goal in the second period, his second of the season, fueled by Evgenii Dadonov and Johnathan Kovacevic. Montreal extended the lead on a Josh Anderson power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, powered by Dadonov and Jonathan Drouin. Edmonton got on the board with a Leon Draisaitl power play goal, his thirtieth of the season, with assists provided by Zach Hyman and Evan Bouchard. The Oilers got closer with an Evander Kane goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Darnell Nurse and Bouchard. The Canadiens replied with a Rafael Harvey-Pinard goal, his sixth of the season, helped along by Michael Matheson and Nick Suzuki. Montreal padded the lead in the third period on a Harris goal, his second of the game and third of the year, with helpers from Joel Armia and Drouin. The Canadiens finished it at 6-2 with a Christian Dvorak shorthanded goal, his eighth of the campaign, set up by Kirby Dach. The Kraken pulled ahead on an Eeli Tolvanen goal, his eleventh of the season, assisted by Oliver Bjorkstrand. The Flyers tied it in the second period with a James van Riemsdyk goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Tippett and Morgan Frost. Seattle gained the lead with a Jaden Schwartz goal, his eleventh of the season, fueled by Eberle and Alexander Wennberg. The Kraken added on in the third period with another Schwartz goal, his second of the game and twelfth of the year, via Wennberg and Will Borgen. San Jose led off in the first period with an Evgeny Svechnikov goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Jonah Gadjovich and Erik Karlsson. The Sharks added on in the second period with an Alexander Barabanov power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Tomas Hertl and Karlsson. Washington got on the board with an Evgeny Kuznetsov goal, his eighth of the season, via Erik Gustafsson and Trevor van Riemsdyk. San Jose replied in the third period with a Karlsson goal, his eighteenth of the year, fueled by Barabanov and Logan Couture. The Sharks iced it at 4-1 with a Hertl empty net goal, his fifteenth of the campaign, set up by Nick Bonino. The three stars were Karlsson, Barabanov, and Hertl.

The NHL is back in full force now, with a 14-game Saturday. The first seven of them are matinees, beginning with...

The Detroit Red Wings hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Spencer Martin and Ville Husso are set to start in goal. Detroit began in the first period with a Dylan Larkin goal, his seventeenth of the season, assisted by Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot. The Red Wings added on with a Jonatan Berggren goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Chiarot and Seider. Vancouver got on the board in the second period with an Anthony Beauvillier power play goal, his eleventh of the season, powered by J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes. Detroit answered with a Larkin power play goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year, with assists provided by Robby Fabbri and David Perron. The Red Wings extended the lead in the third period as Filip Hronek scored his eighth of the season, thanks to Olli Maatta and Michael Rasmussen. Detroit padded the lead on a Berggren power play goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, with helpers from Tyler Bertuzzi and Larkin. Down in Dallas, the Stars bring in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy faces a lesser foe in Scott Wedgewood in goal. Tampa Bay dented the scoreboard in the second period with an Anthony Cirelli goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Brandon Hagel and Alex Killorn. Dallas tied it on a Jamie Benn goal, his twenty-first of the year, going in unassisted. The Lightning took the lead in the third period with another Cirelli goal, his second of the game and fifth of the season, passed from Victor Hedman and Killorn. Tampa Bay iced it at 3-1 with an empty net goal by Hagel, his twenty-second of the year, set up Nikita Kucherov and Cirelli. Northeast to Boston, as the Bruins host the Washington Capitals. Darcy Kuemper and Jeremy Swayman protect the nets. Washington struck first in the first period with a Nicklas Backstrom power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Marcus Johansson and Dmitry Orlov. The Capitals added on in the second period with a Garnet Hathaway goal, his ninth of the year, going in unassisted. Boston got on the board with a Nick Foligno goal, his eighth of the campaign, passed from Connor Clifton and Taylor Hall. This only made it 2-1, the eventual final, with the three stars going to Kuemper (27 for 28 in saves), Hathaway, and Backstrom. 

South to Florida, where the Panthers welcome the Colorado Avalanche. Alexandar Georgiev and Sergei Bobrovsky are in the creases. Colorado kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Logan O'Connor shorthanded goal, his sixth of the season, set up by Andrew Cogliano and Samuel Girard. The Avalanche added on with a Matt Nieto goal, his tenth of the year, via J.T. Compher. Florida got on the board in the second period with an Aaron Ekblad goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Anton Lundell and Sam Reinhart. The Panthers tied it on a Sam Bennett goal, his fourteenth of the year, guided in by Eric Staal and Matthew Tkachuk. Colorado retook the lead with a Devon Toews goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Bowen Byram and Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche extended the lead on a MacKinnon power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, powered by Mikko Rantanen. Carolina tied it in the second period with an unassisted Teuvo Teravainen goal, his sixth of the year. The Hurricanes pulled ahead on a Jesperi Kotkaniemi goal, his eighth of the season, made possible by Calvin de Haan and Andrei Svechnikov. The Rangers retied it on a Panarin goal, his thirteenth of the year, fueled by Vincent Trocheck and Jimmy Vesey. New York pulled ahead in the third period with another Panarin goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the season, assisted by Braden Schneider and Trocheck. The Rangers added on with a Panarin goal to complete his natural hat trick on his fifteenth of the year, with the help of K'Andre Miller. Chicago got on the board in the third period with a Tyler Johnson goal, his sixth of the year, made possible by Jake McCabe and Jason Dickinson. The Rangers padded the lead in the second period on a Jacob Trouba power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Trocheck and Kakko. Seattle got on the board with an Oliver Bjorkstrand goal, his tenth of the season, helped along by Eeli Tolvanen. New York shot back in the third period with a Mika Zibanejad power play goal, his twenty-sixth of the year, with assists provided by Kreider and Adam Fox. The Kraken answered with a Jared McCann power play goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, courtesy of Vince Dunn and Bjorkstrand. Seattle pulled closer with a Brandon Tanev goal, his tenth of the year, made possible by Ryan Donato and Dunn. The Rangers iced it at 6-3 with a Lindgren shorthanded empty net goal, going in unassisted. The three stars were Trocheck, Kakko, and Lindgren, while Bjorkstrand, Kreider, and Dunn get the honorable mentions. 

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ilya Samsonov and Joonas Korpisalo are the veterans in goal. Toronto began in the first period with a John Tavares power play goal, his twenty-second of the season, powered by Mitch Marner and Michael Bunting. The Maple Leafs added on with a Pierre Engvall goal, his eleventh of the year, assisted by Morgan Rielly and David Kampf in the third period. Toronto extended the lead as Tavares scored his second of the game and twenty-third of the campaign, thanks to Marner. This made it 3-0, the final, with the three stars going to Samsonov (30 save shutout), Tavares, and Marner. 

West to Chicago, as the Blackhawks bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Connor Ingram and Jaxson Stauber are the backups in goal. Arizona opened in the first period with a Clayton Keller goal, his nineteenth of the season, passed from Jakob Chychrun and Nick Schmaltz. The Coyotes added on with a Schmaltz goal, his twelfth of the year, assisted by Keller and Barrett Hayton. Chicago got on the board with a Seth Jones goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Boris Katchouk and Jake McCabe. The Blackhawks tied it in the second period with an Andreas Athanasiou goal, his eleventh of the year, guided in by Sam Lafferty. Chicago pulled ahead in the third period with a Colin Blackwell goal, his second of the season, made possible by Athanasiou and Connor Murphy. Arizona tied it on a Nick Bjugstad goal, his twelfth of the year, courtesy of Keller and Juuso Valimaki. The Blackhawks won 4-3 in overtime with a Caleb Jones goal, his second of the campaign, with helpers from Athanasiou and Lafferty. The three stars were Keller, Athanasiou, and Lafferty, while Schmtaltz gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Anaheim Ducks host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Casey DeSmith and John Gibson are in the blue paint. Pittsburgh started in the first period with a Pierre-Olivier Joseph goal, his third of the season, helped along by Teddy Blueger and Josh Archibald. Anaheim tied it on a Trevor Zegras power play goal, his nineteenth of the year, powered by Adam Henrique. The Penguins retook the lead with a Kasperi Kapanen power play goal, his seventh of the season, with assists provided by Joseph and Bryan Rust. Pittsburgh added on with a Jeff Carter goal, his eighth of the year, made possible by Kapanen. The Penguins extended the lead in the second period as Joseph scored his second of the game and fourth of the season, thanks to Evgeni Malkin. Pittsburgh padded the lead in the third period with a Rust goal, his thirteenth of the year, guided in by Malkin and Chad Ruhwedel. The Penguins continued with a Jake Guentzel goal, his twenty-first of the season, assisted by Sidney Crosby. The Ducks got one back with a Mason McTavish goal, his eleventh of the year, fueled by Jakob Silfverberg and Henrique. Anaheim got closer on a John Klingberg goal, his seventh of the season, passed from McTavish and Silfverberg. NHL 2022-23 - Day 115

We've got seven games on as the NHL ramps back up after the bye weeks. First up...

The Detroit Red Wings host the Calgary Flames. Dan Vladar and Ville Husso are in the blue paint. Calgary got going in the second period with a Blake Coleman goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of Noah Hanifin and Mikael Backlund. Detroit tied it on a Dylan Larkin power play goal, his sixteenth of the year, powered by David Perron and Moritz Seider. The Red Wings pulled ahead in the third period with a Filip Zadina goal, assisted by Oskar Sundqvist and Robert Hagg. This made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars being Husso (35 for 36 in saves), Zadina, and Larkin.

Over in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the Edmonton Oilers. Stuart Skinner and Carter Hart are the masked men. Philadelphia started in the first period with a Kevin Hayes goal, his sixteenth of the season, guided in by Travis Sanheim and Scott Laughton. Edmonton tied it on an Evander Kane goal in the second period, his eighth of the year, coming off of Connor McDavid and Mattias Janmark. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Morgan Frost and James van Riemsdyk lifted the Flyers to a 2-1 win over Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the Oilers. The three stars were Hart (34 for 35 in saves), Skinner (35 for 36 in saves), and Hayes.

Along to New Jersey, as the Devils bring in the Seattle Kraken. Philipp Grubauer and MacKenzie Blackwood are in the blue paint. Seattle dented the scoreboard in the second period with an Adam Larsson goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Vince Dunn and Alexander Wennberg. New Jersey tied it on a Dougie Hamilton power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, powered by Ondrej Palat and Tomas Tatar. The Devils pulled ahead in the third period with another Hamilton goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the season, coming off of Palat and Jesper Bratt. New Jersey iced it at 3-1 with a John Marino empty net goal, his fourth of the year, set up by Erik Haula and Nico Hischier. The three stars went to Hamilton, Blackwood (33 for 34 in saves), and Palat.

Down in Florida, the Panthers host the San Jose Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen and Sergei Bobrovsky are set to start in goal. San Jose opened in the first period with an Alexander Barabanov goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Erik Karlsson. Florida tied it in the second period with a Sam Reinhart goal, his eighteenth of the year, fueled by Marc Staal. The Panthers took the lead on another Reinhart goal, his second of the game and nineteenth of the season, guided in by Eetu Luostarinen and Anton Lundell. Florida added on with a shorthanded empty net goal by Eric Staal, his ninth of the year, set up by Luostarinen. The Panthers finished it at 4-1 with Eric Staal's second shorthanded empty net goal, his tenth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were given to Reinhart, Eric Staal, and Luostarinen.

Staying in the state, the Tampa Bay Lightning welcome the Colorado Avalanche. Alexandar Georgiev and Andrei Vasilevskiy tend the twines. Tampa Bay led off in the first period with a Corey Perry power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Anthony Cirelli and Alex Killorn. The Lightning added on in the second period with a Brandon Hagel goal, his twentieth of the year, via Cirelli and Killorn. Tampa Bay extended the lead as Point scored his second of the game and thirty-second of the season on the power play, thanks to Nikita Kucherov and Hagel. The Lightning padded the lead on a Hagel goal, his second of the game and twenty-first of the year, helped along by Killorn. Tampa Bay continued in the third period with a Mikhail Sergachev goal, his seventh of the season, helped along by Point and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. The final held at 5-0, with the three stars being Vasilevskiy (30 save shutout), Hagel, and Killorn, while Point and Cirelli get the honorable mentions.

Back north, the New York Islanders bring in the Vancouver Canucks. Collin Delia is mismatched with Ilya Sorokin in goal. New York began in the first period with a Kyle Palmieri goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Josh Bailey and Adam Pelech. Vancouver tied it on an Oliver Ekman-Larsson goal, his second of the year, courtesy of Elias Pettersson. The Canucks took the lead on a Brock Boeser goal, his tenth of the season, passed from J.T. Miller and Riley Stillman. The Islanders retied it on a Brock Nelson goal, his twentieth of the year, going in unassisted. New York pulled ahead in the second period with a Mathew Barzal goal, his fourteenth of the season, made possible by Noah Dobson and Anders Lee. The Islanders added on with a Bo Horvat goal, his thirty-third of the year, fueled by Barzal and Ryan Pulock. Vancouver got one back with a Nils Aman goal, his second of the season, guided in by Phillip Di Giuseppe and Dakota Joshua. The Canucks tied it on a Pettersson power play goal, his twenty-third of the year, powered by Quinn Hughes and Miller. Vancouver gained the lead with another Pettersson goal, his second of the game and twenty-fourth of the season, coming off of Boeser and Ethan Bear. The Canucks extended the lead as Anthony Beauvillier scored his tenth of the year on the power play, thanks to Boeser and Hughes. New York got one back with a Dobson power play goal, his eleventh of the campaign, with assists provided by Barzal and Horvat. This only made it 6-5, the final, with the three stars handed to Pettersson, Barzal, and Boeser, while Horvat, Dobson, Miller, and Hughes get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Minnesota Wild host the Vegas Golden Knights. Logan Thompson and Marc-Andre Fleury guard the cages. Vegas struck first in the first period on a Nicolas Roy goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Keegan Kolesar and Brett Howden. The Golden Knights added on in the second period with an Alex Pietrangelo goal, his seventh of the year, going in unassisted. Minnesota got on the board with a Kirill Kaprizov power play goal, his twenty-ninth of the season, powered by Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy. Vegas answered on a Paul Cotter goal, his ninth of the year, made possible by Jack Eichel and Jonathan Marchessault. The Golden Knights extended the lead on a Reilly Smith penalty shot goal, his nineteenth of the season. Vegas padded the lead as Eichel scored his sixteenth of the year, thanks to Marchessault and Zach Whitecloud. Filip Gustavsson replaced Fleury in goal. The final remained at 5-1, with the three stars going to Eichel, Marchessault, and Pietrangelo.

The Rangers replied in the third period with a Mika Zibanejad goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, fueled by Trouba and Artemi Panarin. Vancouver got one back on an Elias Pettersson goal, his twenty-second of the year, guided in by Hughes and Brock Boeser. The final held at 4-3, with the three stars going to Miller, Trouba, and Hughes.

Down in Dallas, the Stars bring in the Minnesota Wild. Filip Gustavsson and Jake Oettinger are the masked men. The Stars added on with a Radek Faksa goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Tyler Seguin and Mason Marchment. Dallas extended the lead as Jani Hakanpaa scored his fifth of the season, thanks to Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson. Minnesota got on the board with a Joel Eriksson Ek power play goal, his nineteenth of the year, powered by Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello. The Stars iced it at 4-1 with a Hintz empty net goal, his twenty-second of the campaign, set up by Robertson. The three stars were Hintz, Oettinger (39 for 40 in saves), and Robertson.

Colorado got going in the second period with a Nathan MacKinnon goal, his fourteenth of the season, guided in by Bowen Byram and Samuel Girard. Pittsburgh tied it in the third period with a Bryan Rust goal, his twelfth of the year, via Evgeni Malkin and Jason Zucker. The Penguins won 2-1 in overtime with a Kris Letang goal, his fifth of the campaign, coming off of Sidney Crosby and Malkin. The three stars were DeSmith (41 for 42 in saves), Letang, and Malkin.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning welcome the San Jose Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen and Brian Elliott are in the creases.
