NHL 2019-20 - Day 14

We're done with a second week of the season after seven games tonight. First up...

The Montreal Canadiens host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Carey Price tend the twines. Montreal led off in the first period with a Jeff Petry power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Max Domi. Tampa Bay tied it with a Braydon Coburn goal, assisted by Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov. The Lightning took the lead in the second period on a Stamkos power play goal, his fourth of the year, with assists provided by Victor Hedman and Kucherov. Tampa Bay added on with a Tyler Johnson goal, his second of the campaign, guided in by Ondrej Palat and Yanni Gourde. This stood as the eventual 3-1 final score, with the three stars given to Vasilevskiy (33 for 34 in saves), Stamkos, and Kucherov.

Over in Ontario, the Toronto Maple Leafs welcome the Minnesota Wild. Devan Dubnyk and Frederik Andersen protect the nets. Minnesota began in the first period with a Luke Kunin goal, his second of the season, made possible by Ryan Suter and Jared Spurgeon. Toronto tied it in the second period with a John Tavares goal, his second of the year, via Cody Ceci and Morgan Rielly. The Maple Leafs took the lead with a Mitchell Marner power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Andreas Johnsson and Rielly. Toronto added on with a Johnsson power play goal, his second of the year, guided in by Marner and Rielly. The Maple Leafs extended the lead as Auston Matthews scored his seventh of the campaign, thanks to Marner and Rielly. The Wild got one back in the third period with a Gerald Mayhew goal, passed from Jordan Greenway and Ryan Donato. This only made it 4-2, the final, with the three stars being Rielly, Marner, and Johnsson.

West to Winnipeg, where the Jets bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Darcy Kuemper and Connor Hellebuyck are between the pipes. Winnipeg started in the first period with a Mark Scheifele power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Patrik Laine and Josh Morrissey. Arizona tied it on a Conor Garland goal, his third of the year, fueled by Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Nick Schmaltz. The Coyotes took the lead in the second period on a Christian Dvorak power play goal, with assists provided by Phil Kessel and Ekman-Larsson. Arizona added on with a Schmaltz power play goal, his third of the season, coming off of Jordan Oesterle and Carl Soderberg. The Coyotes extended the lead as Dvorak scored again, thanks to Schmaltz. The Jets got one back in the third period with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his third of the year, with helpers from Scheifele and Morrissey. The final stood at 4-2, with the three stars awarded to Schmaltz, Dvorak, and Scheifele, while Ekman-Larsson and Morrissey get the honorable mentions.

Continuing the Canadian trek, the Calgary Flames host the Philadelphia Flyers. Brian Elliott and David Rittich are in the blue paint. Calgary opened in the first period with an unassisted Michael Frolik goal. The Flames added on in the second period with an Andrew Mangiapane goal, via Mark Giordano and Derek Ryan. Philadelphia got on the board in the third period with a Matt Niskanen goal, courtesy of Travis Konecny. Calgary iced it at 3-1 with an unassisted Elias Lindholm empty net goal, his fourth of the campaign. The three stars were Mangiapane, Rittich (21 for 22 in saves), and Frolik.

To the coast, as the Vancouver Canucks welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Jonathan Bernier and Thatcher Demko are the backups in goal. Detroit struck first in the first period with a Dylan Larkin goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi. Vancouver tied it on a Troy Stecher goal, made possible by Jake Virtanen and Brandon Sutter. The Canucks took the lead in the second period with an Alexander Edler power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser. Vancouver added on with a Pettersson goal, his second of the season, via Tyler Myers and Boeser. The Canucks extended the lead as J.T. Miller scored his second of the year on the power play, with the help of Edler and Boeser. Vancouver padded the lead the lead on another Miller power play goal, his second of the game and third of the season, with helpers from Pettersson and Edler. This made it 5-1, the final, with the three stars handed to Miller, Pettersson, and Edler, while Boeser gets an honorable mentions.

Stateside, the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the Nashville Predators. Pekka Rinne and Marc-Andre Fleury guard the cages. Nashville drew first blood in the first period with a Kyle Turris goal, his second of the season, coming off of Ryan Ellis and Rocco Grimaldi. Vegas tied it on a Mark Stone power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Cody Glass and Paul Stastny. The Golden Knights took the lead with a Reilly Smith goal, his fifth of the season, via Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson. The Predators retied it in the second period with a Colton Sissons goal, his second of the year, guided in by Nick Bonino. Nashville took the lead with a Calle Jarnkrok goal, assisted by Viktor Arvidsson and Roman Josi. The Predators added on with an unassisted Filip Forsberg goal, his fifth of the season. Nashville extended the lead as Bonino scored on the power play in the third period, his second of the year, with the help of Turris and Ellis. The final held at 5-2, with the three stars being Turris, Ellis, and Bonino.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the Carolina Hurricanes. Petr Mrazek and Jack Campbell draw the starts in goal. Carolina got going in the second period with a Martin Necas goal, his second of the season, via Ryan Dzingel and Erik Haula. The Hurricanes added on with a Sebastian Aho shorthanded empty goal in the third period, his second of the year, set up by Teuvo Teravainen. This made it 2-0, the final, with the three stars given to Mrazek (31 save shutout), Campbell (21 for 22 in saves), and Necas.
