NHL 2021-22 - Day 135

Five games on for a Monday, beginning with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the Los Angeles Kings. Cal Petersen and Linus Ullmark are set to start in goal. Boston opened in the first period with a Trent Frederic goal, his fourth of the season, via Charlie Coyle and Craig Smith. Los Angeles tied it on a Blake Lizotte goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Olli Maatta and Carl Grundstrom. The Bruins took the lead in the second period on a Smith goal, his eleventh of the season, passed from Coyle and Mike Reilly. The Kings tied it in the third period with a Trevor Moore goal, his tenth of the year, coming off of Arthur Kaliyev and Sean Durzi. Los Angeles won 3-2 in overtime with an Andreas Athanasiou goal, his eighth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Smith, Athanasiou, and Coyle.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Petr Mrazek and Elvis Merzlikins man the nets. Toronto started in the first period with an Ilya Mikheyev goal, his tenth of the season, courtesy of Pierre Engvall and David Kampf. The Maple Leafs added on with a Mitchell Marner goal, his twenty-second of the year, assisted by Michael Bunting and Timothy Liljegren. Toronto extended the lead as Auston Matthews scored his fortieth of the season, thanks to Marner and T.J. Brodie. Columbus got on the board in the second period with a Sean Kuraly goal, his ninth of the year, fueled by Max Domi. The Blue Jackets got closer with an Oliver Bjorkstrand goal, his twentieth of the season, coming off of Gustav Nyquist and Andrew Peeke. Columbus tied it in the third period with a Jack Roslovic power play goal, his tenth of the year, powered by Domi and Nyquist. The Maple Leafs retook the lead on an Alexander Kerfoot goal, his ninth of the season, with helpers from Jason Spezza and Wayne Simmonds. Toronto padded the lead on a Bunting goal, his twentieth of the year, guided in by Matthews and Brodie. The Blue Jackets got one back with a Patrik Laine goal, his twenty-second of the campaign, helped along by Zach Werenski and Jakub Voracek. This only made it 5-4, the final, with the three stars being Matthews, Marner, and Bunting, while Brodie, Nyquist, and Domi get the honorable mentions.

Back east, the Buffalo Sabres host the Florida Panthers. Spencer Knight and Craig Anderson are the goalies. Florida led off in the first period with a Brandon Montour goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Aleksander Barkov and Mason Marchment. The Panthers added on with a Noel Acciari goal, via Montour and Marchment in the second period. Florida extended the lead as Anthony Duclair scored his twenty-second of the year on the power play, powered by Barkov and Sam Reinhart. The Panthers padded the lead on a Carter Verhaeghe goal, his seventeenth of the season, courtesy of Marchment and Eetu Luostarinen. Florida continued with a Patric Hornqvist goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Sam Bennett and MacKenzie Weegar. The Panthers struck again in the third period as Barkov scored his twenty-sixth of the season on the power play, thanks to Jonathan Huberdeau and Duclair. Buffalo spoiled the shutout with a John Hayden goal, his second of the year, with helpers from Rasmus Asplund and Casey Fitzgerald. This made it 6-1, the final, with the three stars handed to Barkov, Montour, and Duclair, while Marchment gets an honorable mention.

Next up, the New York Islanders bring in the Colorado Avalanche. Pavel Francouz and Semyon Varlamov are in the blue paint. Colorado began in the first period with an Anders Lee power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Noah Dobson and Anthony Beauvillier. Colorado tied it on a Cale Makar power play goal, his nineteenth of the year, with assists provided by Nazem Kadri and Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche took the lead in the third period on a MacKinnon goal, his eighteenth of the season, passed from Gabriel Landeskog and Makar. Colorado added on with a J.T. Compher goal, his eleventh of the year, fueled by Alex Newhook and Logan O'Connor. The Avalanche extended the lead as Makar scored his second of the game and twentieth of the season, thanks to MacKinnon and Andre Burakovsky. Colorado padded the lead on a Devon Toews goal, his twelfth of the year, coming off of Landeskog and Kadri. The Islanders got one back on another Lee power play goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the season, with helpers from Dobson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. New York got closer with a Casey Cizikas goal, his seventh of the year, made possible by Kyle Palmieri and Ryan Pulock. The Islanders chipped closer on a Brock Nelson goal, his twenty-first of the season, courtesy of Lee. This only made it 5-4, the final, with the three stars handed to Makar, MacKinnon, and Lee, while Kadri, Landeskog, and Dobson get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Calgary Flames host the Edmonton Oilers. Mikko Koskinen and Jacob Markstrom are the masked men. Calgary got going in the second period with a Tyler Toffoli power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau. The Flames added on with another Toffoli goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the year, guided in by Adam Ruzicka and Andrew Mangiapane. Edmonton got on the board in the third period with a Devin Shore goal, his third of the season, via Derek Ryan and Darnell Nurse. Calgary answered with a Gaudreau goal, his twenty-third of the year, helped along by Elias Lindholm. The three stars were Toffoli, Markstrom (27 for 28 in saves), and Gaudreau.
