NHL 2021-22 - Day 139

We'll have four games on this Friday slate. First up...

The Pittsburgh Penguins host the Vegas Golden Knights. Laurent Brossoit and Tristan Jarry man the nets. Pittsburgh led off in the first period with a Mike Matheson goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust. The Penguins added on with a Jeff Carter goal, his fourteenth of the year, via Brock McGinn and Valtteri Puustinen. Vegas got on the board with a Jack Eichel goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Jonathan Marchessault and Max Pacioretty. The Golden Knights tied it on an Alex Pietrangelo goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson. Pittsburgh took the lead with a Mark Friedman goal, helped along by Brian Boyle and Carter in the third period. The Penguins extended the lead on a Rust power play goal, his twentieth of the season, powered by Jake Guentzel. Pittsburgh iced it at 5-2 with an Evan Rodrigues empty net goal, his seventeenth of the year, set up by Kris Letang. The three stars were Rust, Carter, and Marchessault.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Minnesota Wild. Kaapo Kahkonen and Elvis Merzlikins are set to start in goal. Columbus began in the first period with a Yegor Chinakhov power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Jake Bean and Max Domi. Minnesota tied it on a Kirill Kaprizov goal, his thirtieth of the year, coming off of Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Fiala on the power play. The Wild took the lead with a Zuccarello goal, his nineteenth of the season, via Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Hartman. The Blue Jackets tied it on a Zach Werenski goal, his tenth of the year, guided in by Oliver Bjorkstrand and Gustav Nyquist in the third period. The Blue Jackets won 3-2 in a shootout with a lone tally by Chinakhov. The three stars were Chinakhov, Zuccarello, and Werenski.

East to New York, as the Islanders bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Semyon Varlamov are between the pipes. New York started in the first period with a Brock Nelson power play goal, his twenty-third of the season, powered by Anthony Beauvillier and Noah Dobson. Winnipeg tied it on a Kyle Connor goal, his thirty-sixth of the year, guided in by Nikolaj Ehlers and Neal Pionk. The Islanders retook the lead in the second period with a Josh Bailey goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Kyle Palmieri. New York added on with an Anders Lee goal, his twentieth of the year, coming off of Nelson and Beauvillier. The Jets got one back in the third period with a Blake Wheeler goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Paul Stastny and Dylan DeMelo. The Islanders replied with a Bailey goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, helped along by Adam Pelech and Pageau. New York finished it at 5-2 with a Cal Clutterbuck empty net goal, his sixth of the campaign, set up by Casey Cizikas. The three stars went to Bailey, Nelson, and Beauvillier, while Pageau gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks host the Washington Capitals. Vitek Vanecek and Thatcher Demko guard the cages. Washington opened in the first period with an Evgeny Kuznetsov goal, his seventeenth of the season, coming off of Nick Jensen and T.J. Oshie. The Capitals added on with another Kuznetsov power play goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year, powered by Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson. Vancouver got on the board in the third period with a Quinn Hughes goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. The Canucks tied it on a Bo Horvat power play goal, his nineteenth of the year, with assists provided by Miller and Hughes. Vancouver took the lead with a Horvat goal, his second of the game and twentieth of the season, guided in by Travis Hamonic and Hughes. Washington tied it again with a Kuznetsov power play goal, completing his hat trick on his nineteenth of the year, with helpers from Oshie and Ovechkin. The Capitals won 4-3 in overtime with a Lars Eller goal, his ninth of the campaign, passed from Carlson and Tom Wilson. The three stars were Kuznetsov, Horvat, and Hughes, while Ovechkin, Carlson, Oshie, and Miller get the honorable mentions.
