NHL 2018/19 - Day 42

We've got nine games on Tuesday night, beginning with...

The New York Islanders hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Thomas Greiss are in goal. Vancouver started in the first period with a Brendan Leipsic goal, his second of the season, assisted by Bo Horvat and Michael Del Zotto. New York tied it on a Tom Kuhnhackl goal, his second of the year, via Leo Komarov and Valtteri Filppula. The Islanders took the lead with a Josh Bailey goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Mathew Barzal. New York added on with a Jordan Eberle goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Brock Nelson and Andrew Ladd. The Canucks got one back with a Jake Virtanen power play goal in the second period, his eighth of the season, powered by Loui Eriksson and Leipsic. The Islanders shot back with another Kuhnhackl goal, his second of the game and third of the year, coming off of Eberle and Nelson in the third period. New York extended the lead as Cal Clutterbuck scored on the power play, with the help of Barzal and Johnny Boychuk. This made it 5-2, the final, with the three stars going to Kuhnhackl, Eberle, and Leipsic, while Barzal and Nelson get the honorable mentions.

Nearby in New Jersey, the Devils welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins. Casey DeSmith and Keith Kinkaid man the nets. New Jersey opened in the first period with a Travis Zajac goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Taylor Hall and Damon Severson. Pittsburgh tied it on a Phil Kessel power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The Devils took the lead back in the second period on a Severson goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Hall and Jesper Bratt. The Penguins tied it again in the third period with a Jake Guentzel goal, his sixth of the year, via Crosby and Kessel. New Jersey pulled ahead with a Hall goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Zajac and Kyle Palmieri. The Devils iced it at 4-2 with a Hall empty net goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, set up by Stefan Noesen. The three stars were awarded to Hall, Severson, and Zajac, with Kessel and Crosby getting the honorable mentions.

In Philadelphia, the Flyers bring in the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo and Brian Elliott are the veteran goalies. Florida got going in the second period with an Aaron Ekblad power play goal, powered by Frank Vatrano and Mike Hoffman. The Panthers added on with an Evgenii Dadonov goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Aleksander Barkov. Philadelphia got on the board with a Jakub Voracek goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Oskar Lindblom and Sean Couturier in the third period. This only made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars given to Luongo (30 for 31 in saves), Dadonov, and Ekblad.

Up in Buffalo, the Sabres host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Louis Domingue and Carter Hutton are set to start in goal. Buffalo led off in the first period with a Jeff Skinner goal, his thirteenth of the season, assisted by Sam Reinhart and Nathan Beaulieu. The Sabres added on in the second period with a Kyle Okposo goal, his fifth of the year, via Conor Sheary and Beaulieu. Tampa Bay got on the board with an Anthony Cirelli goal, his third of the campaign, fueled by Alex Killorn and Yanni Gourde. This only made it 2-1, the eventual final, with the three stars going to Hutton (29 for 30 in saves), Beaulieu, and Okposo.

Over in Detroit, the Red Wings welcome the Arizona Coyotes. Darcy Kuemper and Jimmy Howard are in the blue paint. Detroit began in the first period with an Anthony Mantha goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Frans Nielsen and Mike Green. The Red Wings added on with a Dennis Cholowski goal, his third of the year, via Danny DeKeyser and Tyler Bertuzzi. Detroit extended the lead as Michael Rasmussen scored his third of the season on the power play, thanks to Dylan Larkin and Green. The Red Wings padded the lead in the second period with a Luke Glendening goal, his second of the year, made possible by Justin Abdelkader and Nick Jensen. Detroit chased Kuemper with an Andreas Athanasiou goal in the third period, his seventh of the season, assisted by Darren Helm. The Red Wings continued against Hunter Miska on a Green goal, courtesy of Athanasiou and Nielsen. Arizona got on the board with a Lawson Crouse goal, his third of the year, passed from Vinnie Hinostroza and Dylan Strome. This only made it 6-1, the final, with the three stars going to Green, Athanasiou, and Nielsen.

Further to the west, the Minnesota Wild bring in the Washington Capitals. Pheonix Copley and Devan Dubnyk are in the creases. Washington struck first in the first period with a Dmitry Orlov goal, assisted by Lars Eller and Andre Burakovsky. The Capitals added on with a Tom Wilson goal, passed from Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Washington extended the lead in the second period as Burakovsky scored his second of the season, with the help of Eller and Brett Connolly. Minnesota got on the board with an unassisted Mikko Koivu goal, his third of the year. The Capitals replied with an Orlov goal in the third period, his second of the game, guided in by Alex Ovechkin and Matt Niskanen. Washington padded the lead on a T.J. Oshie goal, his ninth of the season, helped along by Nicklas Backstrom and Jakub Vrana. The Wild got one back with a Matt Dumba power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Koivu and Marcus Foligno. This only made it 5-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Orlov, Burakovsky, and Eller, while Koivu gets an honorable mention.

Crossing into Canada, the Edmonton Oilers host the Montreal Canadiens. Antti Niemi and Mikko Koskinen are the backups in goal. Edmonton drew first blood in the first period with a Matt Benning goal, via Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Montreal tied it on a Max Domi goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Andrew Shaw and Noah Juulsen. The Oilers took the lead back with a Draisaitl goal, his eleventh of the year, with a lone helper from McDavid. The Canadiens tied it again with a Shaw goal in the second period, his fifth of the season, assisted by Jonathan Drouin and Jeff Petry. Edmonton pulled ahead again with a Drake Caggiula goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Alex Chiasson and Benning. The Oilers added on in the third period with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal, his fourth of the season, courtesy of Ryan Strome and Kris Russell. Edmonton extended the lead as Russel scored, thanks to Kevin Gravel and Jujhar Khaira. The Oilers padded the lead on a Darnell Nurse goal, his second of the year, fueled by McDavid, who got a sock trick, and Draisaitl. This stood for a 6-2 win, with the three stars given to Draisaitl, McDavid, and Russell, while Benning and Shaw take the honorable mentions.

Down in California, the Los Angeles Kings welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen faces a lesser foe in Peter Budaj in goal. Toronto kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Nazem Kadri power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Mitchell Marner and John Tavares. The Maple Leafs added on with a Tavares power play goal, his eleventh of the year, with a lone assist by Morgan Rielly. Los Angeles got on the board with an Adrian Kempe goal, his second of the season, via Dion Phaneuf. Toronto shot back with a Rielly goal in the second period, his eighth of the year, coming off of Tavares. The Maple Leafs extended the lead as Andreas Johnsson scored his second of the season, assisted by Travis Dermott and Par Lindholm. Cal Petersen replaced Budaj in goal. Toronto padded the lead on a Kadri power play goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, with assists provided by Patrick Marleau and Marner. This led to the eventual 5-1 final score, with the three stars given to Tavares, Kadri, and Rielly, while Marner gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Martin Jones are the masked men. San Jose was first to score in the first period with a Marcus Sorensen goal, his third of the season, going in unassisted. The Sharks added on with a Joe Pavelski power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Erik Karlsson and Tomas Hertl. San Jose extended the lead as Antti Suomela scored his third of the season, an unassisted goal. Nashville got on the board in the second period with a Craig Smith goal, his fifth of the year, passed from Ryan Johansen and Filip Forsberg. The Predators got closer with an unassisted Forsberg goal, his eleventh of the season. Nashville tied it as Forsberg scored his second of the game and twelfth of the year, thanks to Smith. The Predators gained the lead on a Rocco Grimaldi goal in the third period, helped along by Kevin Fiala and Matt Irwin. The Sharks retied it on another Pavelski goal, his second of the game and tenth of the season, fueled by Sorensen and Brent Burns. San Jose gained the lead with a Joe Thornton goal, his third of the year, guided in by Sorensen and Justin Braun. This stood for a 5-4 win, with the three stars belonging to Pavelski, Forsberg, and Sorensen, while Smith gets the honorable mention.
