NHL 2018/19 - Day 44

We've got another nine-game day today, beginning with...

The New York Islanders hosting the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Thomas Greiss play in goal. The Rangers started in the first period with a Chris Kreider power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Neal Pionk and Mika Zibanejad. The Rangers added on with a Fredrik Claesson goal, passed from Brett Howden. The Islanders got on the board with an Anthony Beauvillier goal, his second of the year, via Thomas Hickey and Valtteri Filppula. The Islanders tied it on a Brock Nelson goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Nick Leddy and Jordan Eberle. The Islanders pulled ahead with a Beauvillier goal in the second period, his second of the game and third of the year, guided in by Filppula and Leo Komarov. The Rangers tied it again with a shorthanded and unassisted Kevin Hayes goal, his fourth of the season. The Islanders regained the lead on a Beauvillier power play goal, completing his hat trick on his fourth of the year, with helpers from Johnny Boychuk and Mathew Barzal. The Islanders extended the lead as Anders Lee scored his sixth of the season on the power play, thanks to Leddy and Josh Bailey. Alexandar Georgiev replaced Lundqvist in goal for the third period. The Islanders padded the lead with a Komarov goal, his third of the year, coming off of Filppula, who got a sock trick, and Beauvillier. The Rangers pulled back with another Kreider goal, his second of the game and tenth of the season, with assists provided by Pionk and the goalie Georgiev. The Rangers got closer as Filip Chytil scored his second of the year, with the help of Vladislav Namestnikov and Kevin Shattenkirk. The Islanders capped it at 7-5 with a Cal Clutterbuck empty net goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Nelson. The three stars went to Beauvillier, Filppula, and Kreider, while Nelson, Komarov, Leddy, and Pionk earned honorable mentions.

Over in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the New Jersey Devils. Keith Kinkaid and Brian Elliott man the creases. New Jersey led off in the first period with a Joey Anderson goal, assisted by Brett Seney and Blake Coleman. The Devils added on with a Kyle Palmieri goal in the third period, his eleventh of the season, courtesy of Coleman and Travis Zajac. New Jersey iced it at 3-0 with a Coleman empty net goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Palmieri. The three stars went to Coleman, Kinkaid (29 save shutout), and Palmieri.

Across Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Penguins bring in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Louis Domingue and Matt Murray draw the starts in goal. Pittsburgh opened in the first period with a Patric Hornqvist power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Phil Kessel and Kris Letang. The Penguins added on with a Kessel power play goal, his ninth of the year, with assists provided by Evgeni Malkin and Hornqvist. Tampa Bay got on the board with a Brayden Point power play goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov. The Lightning tied it in the second period with another Point power play goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the year, guided in by Steven Stamkos and Kucherov. Tampa Bay pulled ahead with a Point power play goal, completing his natural hat trick with his twelfth of the season, made possible by J.T. Miller and Kucherov, the latter earning a sock trick. Pittsburgh retied it with a Hornqvist goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, via Malkin. The Lightning regained the lead on a Yanni Gourde power play goal, his eighth of the campaign, helped along by Mikhail Sergachev and Alex Killorn. This held up for a 4-3 win, with the three stars handed to Point, Kucherov, and Hornqvist, while Kessel and Malkin take the honorable mentions.

West again to Columbus, as the Blue Jackets host the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo faces a lesser foe in Joonas Korpisalo in goal. Florida began in the first period with a Nick Bjugstad goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Mike Matheson and Denis Malgin. The Panthers added on with an Aaron Ekblad power play goal, his second of the year, powered by Mike Hoffman and Matheson. Columbus got on the board in the second period with a Cam Atkinson shorthanded goal, his ninth of the season, set up by Alexander Wennberg. The Blue Jackets tied it on a Brandon Dubinsky goal, his second of the year, guided in by Zach Werenski and Wennberg. Columbus pulled ahead with a Pierre-Luc Dubois goal, his ninth of the season, via Anthony Duclair and Atkinson. Florida retied it on a Keith Yandle power play goal, his fourth of the year, with assists provided by Vincent Trocheck and Jonathan Huberdeau. The Blue Jackets reclaimed the lead on a Markus Hannikainen goal in the third period, assisted by Zac Dalpe and David Savard. Columbus extended the lead as Duclair scored his eighth of the season, with the help of Dubois and Markus Nutivaara. The Blue Jackets padded the lead with a Josh Anderson goal, his eighth of the year, coming off of Boone Jenner and Nick Foligno. Columbus kept going with a Jenner empty net goal, his fourth of the campaign, courtesy of Ryan Murray and Dubinsky. This made it 7-3, the final, with the three stars given to Atkinson, Duclair, and Dubinsky, while Jenner, Wennberg, Dubois, and Matheson get the honorable mentions.

Up in Ottawa, the Senators welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Jimmy Howard and Craig Anderson protect the nets. Ottawa struck first in the first period with a Cody Ceci goal, his third of the season, guided in by Matt Duchene and Mark Stone. Detroit tied it in the second period with a Michael Rasmussen goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Mike Green and Trevor Daley. The Senators took the lead back with a Drake Batherson power play goal, powered by Duchene. This led to the eventual 2-1 final score, with the three stars handed to Duchene, Anderson (34 for 35 in saves), and Batherson.

Back stateside, the Minnesota Wild bring in the Vancouver Canucks. Richard Bachman is mismatched with Devan Dubnyk in goal. Minnesota drew first blood in the first period with a Charlie Coyle goal, his third of the season, made possible by Jonas Brodin and Mikko Koivu. The Wild added on with an unassisted Koivu power play goal, his fourth of the year. Minnesota extended the lead as Nino Niederreiter scored his second of the season on the power play in the second period, thanks to Koivu and Matt Dumba. Vancouver got on the board with a Bo Horvat power play goal, his tenth of the year, powered by Adam Gaudette. The Wild answered on an Eric Staal goal, his sixth of the season, via Mikael Granlund and Ryan Suter. Minnesota padded the lead with a Dumba goal, his seventh of the year, passed from J.T. Brown and Eric Fehr. The Wild kept going in the third period with a Jason Zucker goal, his sixth of the season, fueled by Staal and Suter. The Canucks got one back with a Markus Granlund goal, his fourth of the year, with helpers from Troy Stecher and Darren Archibald. This only made it 6-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Koivu, Dumba, and Staal, while Suter gets an honorable mention.

In Canada again, the Calgary Flames host the Montreal Canadiens. Carey Price and Mike Smith are the veterans in goal. Montreal kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Tomas Tatar goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Brendan Gallagher and Phillip Danault. Calgary tied it in the second period with a Matthew Tkachuk power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Mark Giordano and Elias Lindholm. The Flames took the lead with another Tkachuk goal, his second of the game and ninth of the season, coming off of T.J. Brodie and Giordano. The Canadiens tied it in the third period on a Jonathan Drouin goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Andrew Shaw and Max Domi. Montreal took the lead again with an Artturi Lehkonen goal, his second of the campaign, made possible by Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Noah Juulsen. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Price (43 for 45 in saves), Tkachuk, and Giordano.

Way to the south, the Arizona Coyotes welcome the Nashville Predators. Pekka Rinne and Darcy Kuemper are between the pipes. Arizona was first to score in the first period with a shorthanded Michael Grabner goal, his fifth of the season, set up by Kevin Connauton. The Coyotes added on with a Jason Demers goal in the second period, helped along by Christian Fischer and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Nashville got on the board in the third period with a Nick Bonino goal, assisted by Austin Watson and Roman Josi. They didn't have time to equalize, losing 2-1, with the three stars awarded to Kuemper (45 for 46 in saves), Grabner, and Demers.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Martin Jones tend the twines. Toronto got going in the first period with a John Tavares goal, his twelfth of the season, made possible by Mitchell Marner and Morgan Rielly. San Jose tied it on a Kevin Labanc goal, his third of the year, via Erik Karlsson and Joakim Ryan. The Maple Leafs retook the lead on a Kasperi Kapanen goal, his seventh of the season, guided in by Patrick Marleau and Travis Dermott. The Sharks tied it again on a Joe Pavelski power play goal, his eleventh of the year, powered by Brent Burns and Karlsson. San Jose took the lead with a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal, passed from Pavelski and Timo Meier. Toronto tied it in the second period with a Josh Leivo goal, his second of the season, assisted by Tyler Ennis and Frederik Gauthier. The Maple Leafs pulled ahead with a shorthanded Kapanen goal, his second of the game and eighth of the year, set up by Marner. Toronto finished it at 5-3 with a Marner goal in the third period, his sixth of the campaign, with a lone assist by the goalie Andersen. The three stars were Kapanen, Marner, and Pavelski, while Karlsson gets an honorable mention.
