NHL 2018/19 - Day 46

Eleven games on this Saturday, beginning with a pair of matinees. The first is in...

New Jersey, as the Devils host the Detroit Red Wings. Jonathan Bernier and Keith Kinkaid make the starts in goal. New Jersey led off in the first period with a Pavel Zacha goal, via Jesper Bratt. The Devils added on in the second period with a shorthanded Blake Coleman goal, his seventh of the season, set up by Damon Severson and Andy Greene. Detroit got on the board with a Luke Glendening goal, his third of the year, passed from Dennis Cholowski and Tyler Bertuzzi. The Red Wings tied it on a Michael Rasmussen goal in the third period, his fifth of the season, guided in by Mike Green and Bertuzzi. Detroit won 3-2 in overtime with a Dylan Larkin goal, his eighth of the year, with a lone assist by Anthony Mantha. The three stars went to Bertuzzi, Larkin, and Rasmussen.

Over in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Louis Domingue and Calvin Pickard play in goal in place of injured starters. Tampa Bay got going in the second period with an Adam Erne power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Yanni Gourde and the goalie Domingue. The Lightning added on with a Cedric Paquette goal, his third of the year, via Erne and Braydon Coburn. Philadelphia got on the board with a James van Riemsdyk power play goal, with assists provided by Shayne Gostisbehere and Claude Giroux. Tampa Bay answered with a Brayden Point goal, his thirteenth of the season, courtesy of Ryan Callahan and Erne. The Lightning extended the lead as Tyler Johnson scored his seventh of the year in the third period, thanks to Nikita Kucherov on the power play. Tampa Bay padded the lead with a Point power play goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the season, coming off of Steven Stamkos and Kucherov. The Flyers pulled one back with a Travis Konecny power play goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Gostisbehere and van Riemsdyk. Philadelphia chipped closer on an unassisted Sean Couturier power play goal, his eighth of the season. The Flyers continued to draw closer on a Konecny goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, helped along by Giroux and Couturier. Philadelphia tied it on a Wayne Simmonds goal, his eighth of the season, with helpers from Robert Hagg and van Riemsdyk. The Lightning won 6-5 in overtime with an Anthony Cirelli goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Alex Killorn and Victor Hedman. The three stars were Erne, Point, and Konecny, while Kucherov, van Riemsdyk, Giroux, Gostisbehere, and Couturier take the honorable mentions.

Westward to Minnesota, as the Wild bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Linus Ullmark is mismatched with Devan Dubnyk in goal. Minnesota began in the first period with a Zach Parise goal, his eighth of the season, going in unassisted. The Wild added on with a Matt Dumba power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Nino Niederreiter and Mikko Koivu. Buffalo got on the board with a Jake McCabe goal, his second of the season, guided in by Rasmus Dahlin and Kyle Okposo. The Sabres tied it in the third period with a Dahlin goal, his second of the year, via Jack Eichel and Jason Pominville. Buffalo won 3-2 with a Pominville goal, his ninth of the campaign, fueled by Eichel and McCabe. The three stars were Pominville, Dahlin, and McCabe, while Eichel gets an honorable mention.

Back east, the Carolina Hurricanes host the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky and Scott Darling are in the creases. Columbus opened in the first period with a Cam Atkinson goal, his tenth of the season, via Artemi Panarin and Pierre-Luc Dubois. The Blue Jackets added on in the second period with another Atkinson goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the year, helped along by Panarin. Carolina got on the board with a Sebastian Aho goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Trevor van Riemsdyk. Columbus replied with a Zach Werenski goal, his fourth of the year, assisted by Atkinson and Panarin, the latter earning a sock trick. The Blue Jackets extended the lead as Atkinson completed his hat trick on a power play goal, his twelfth of the campaign, powered by Alexander Wennberg and Dubois. This held up for the eventual 4-1 final score, with the three stars handed to Atkinson, Panarin, and Bobrovsky (30 for 31 in saves), while Dubois takes an honorable mention.

Up in New York, the Rangers welcome the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo and Henrik Lundqvist tend the twines. New York started in the first period with a Filip Chytil goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Kevin Hayes and Chris Kreider. Florida tied it on a Mike Hoffman goal, his eighth of the year, coming off of Evgenii Dadonov and Aleksander Barkov. The Panthers took the lead with an Aaron Ekblad power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Mike Matheson and Hoffman. The Rangers tied it again with a Brendan Smith goal, his second of the year, assisted by Lias Andersson and Kreider. New York pulled ahead with a Vladislav Namestnikov goal in the second period, his second of the season, guided in by Mika Zibanejad. The Rangers added on with a Kreider power play goal in the third period, his eleventh of the year, with assists provided by Neal Pionk and the goalie Lundqvist. The final remained at 4-2, with the three stars awarded to Kreider, Lundqvist (39 for 41 in saves), and Hoffman.

Further north, the Ottawa Senators bring in the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matt Murray and Craig Anderson are between the pipes. Pittsburgh struck first in the first period with a Kris Letang power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin. Ottawa tied it on a Brady Tkachuk goal, his fifth of the year, with a lone assist by Colin White. The Senators took the lead on a Mark Stone goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Thomas Chabot and Ryan Dzingel. Ottawa added on with a Duchene goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Mikkel Boedker and Drake Batherson. Casey DeSmith replaced Murray to start the second period. The Senators extended the lead with Stone's second of the game and ninth of the season, a shorthanded and unassisted goal. Ottawa padded the lead as Cody Ceci scored his fourth of the year, thanks to Duchene and Dzingel. The Penguins got one back with a Zach Aston-Reese goal in the third period, going in unassisted. Pittsburgh pulled closer with a Matt Cullen goal, his second of the season, helped along by Bryan Rust and Jack Johnson. The Senators shot back on a Duchene goal, his second of the game and eighth of the year, fueled by Batherson and Boedker. The Penguins pulled one back with a Patric Hornqvist goal, his eighth of the campaign, guided in by Kessel and Malkin. This only made it 6-4, the final, with the three stars being Duchene, Stone, and Batherson, while Boedker, Dzingel, Kessel, and Malkin get the honorable mentions.

Across Canada, the Vancouver Canucks host the Montreal Canadiens. Carey Price and Jacob Markstrom are set to start in goal. Montreal dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Tomas Tatar goal, his ninth of the season, made possible by Jeff Petry. Vancouver tied it on a Michael Del Zotto goal, via Antoine Roussel and Tyler Motte. The Canucks took the lead in the third period with an Elias Pettersson power play goal, his eleventh of the year, powered by Ben Hutton and Nikolay Goldobin. The Canadiens tied it again with an Andrew Shaw goal, his sixth of the season, guided in by Max Domi and Jonathan Drouin. Montreal pulled ahead with a Drouin power play goal, his seventh of the year, assisted by Phillip Danault and Brendan Gallagher. This made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Drouin, Price (36 for 38 in saves), and Shaw.

Down in Arizona, the Coyotes welcome the Boston Bruins. Jaroslav Halak and Darcy Kuemper man the nets. Boston kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson goal, assisted by Noel Acciari. The Bruins added on with a Jake DeBrusk goal, his eighth of the season, with a lone assist by Brad Marchand. Arizona got on the board in the second period with a Brad Richardson goal, his sixth of the year, via Vinnie Hinostroza. This was as close as it got, with Boston winning 2-1, with the three stars given to Halak (32 for 33 in saves), DeBrusk, and Forsbacka Karlsson.

Eastward to Nashville, as the Predators bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Calvin Petersen is mismatched with Pekka Rinne in goal. Nashville cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Kyle Turris power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Ryan Ellis and Roman Josi. Los Angeles tied it on a Nate Thompson goal, via Tyler Toffoli and Adrian Kempe. The Kings took the lead with an Anze Kopitar goal, his fifth of the year, with a lone helper from Dustin Brown. The Predators retied it on a Calle Jarnkrok goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Ellis. Los Angeles pulled back on an Alex Iafallo goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Kopitar and Jake Muzzin. Nashville tied it in the third period with a Jarnkrok power play goal, his fifth of the season and second of the game, with helpers from Josi and Colton Sissons. The Predators took the lead with a shorthanded and unassisted goal by Jarnkrok, completing his hat trick on his sixth of the year. Nashville iced it at 5-3 with a Nick Bonino empty net goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Austin Watson and Sissons. The three stars went to Jarnkrok, Ellis, and Josi, while Kopitar and Sissons get the honorable mentions.

Northwest to Alberta, as provincial rivals clash with the Calgary Flames hosting the Edmonton Oilers. Mikko Koskinen and David Rittich are the backups in goal. Edmonton drew first blood in the first period with a shorthanded Alex Chiasson goal, his seventh of the season, set up by Adam Larsson. The Oilers added on in the second period with a Connor McDavid power play goal, his eleventh of the year, powered by Leon Draisaitl. Calgary got on the board with a Derek Ryan power play goal, his second of the season, via Sam Bennett and Noah Hanifin. The Flames tied it in the third period with a Sean Monahan goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Travis Hamonic and Johnny Gaudreau. Calgary took the lead on an Elias Lindholm goal, his tenth of the season, passed from Hanifin and Monahan. The Flames capped it at 4-2 with an empty net goal by Lindholm, his second of the game and eleventh of the year, with a lone assist by Hamonic. The three stars were Monahan, Lindholm, and Hanifin, while Hamonic gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks host the St. Louis Blues. Chad Johnson and Aaron Dell make the spot starts in goal. San Jose was first to score in the second period with an Erik Karlsson power play goal, powered by Logan Couture and Evander Kane. The Sharks added on with a Joe Pavelski goal, his twelfth of the season, assisted by Timo Meier and Couture. San Jose extended the lead as Kane scored his seventh of the year, with the help of Karlsson and Antti Suomela. The Sharks padded the lead in the third period with another Pavelski goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the campaign, via Couture, who got a sock trick, and Meier. This made it 4-0, the final, with the three stars given to Pavelski, Couture, and Dell (30 save shutout), while Kane, Karlsson, and Meier get the honorable mentions.
