NHL 2018/19 - Day 45

Six games on tonight, beginning with...

The Dallas Stars hosting the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Ben Bishop protect the nets. Dallas won 1-0 in overtime with a Jason Dickinson goal, his fourth of the season, with a lone assist by Mattias Janmark. The three stars belonged to Bishop (23 save shutout), Rask (36 for 37 in saves), and Dickinson.

Up in Winnipeg, the Jets welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Carter Hutton faces a lesser foe in Laurent Brossoit in goal. Winnipeg got going in the second period with a Kyle Connor goal, his ninth of the season, via Patrik Laine and Bryan Little. Buffalo tied it in the third period with a Jeff Skinner power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, powered by Jack Eichel and Rasmus Dahlin. The tie went to a shootout, where Eichel, Jason Pominville, and Conor Sheary lifted the Sabres to a 2-1 win over Laine, Connor, and the Jets. The three stars went to Eichel, Hutton (25 for 26 in saves), and Brossoit (31 for 32 in saves).

Back stateside, the Chicago Blackhawks bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Calvin Petersen is mismatched with Corey Crawford in goal. Los Angeles dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his fifth of the season, going in unassisted. Chicago tied it on a Brandon Saad goal, his fifth of the year, courtesy of Jonathan Toews and Gustav Forsling. The Kings won 2-1 with shootout tallies by Ilya Kovalchuk and Anze Kopitar. The three stars were Petersen (34 for 35 in saves), Crawford (31 for 32 in saves), and Toffoli.

To the west, the Colorado Avalanche host the Washington Capitals. Pheonix Copley and Philipp Grubauer are the backups in goal. Colorado led off in the first period with a Carl Soderberg goal, his seventh of the season, guided in by Tyson Jost and Tyson Barrie. Washington tied it on a Devante Smith-Pelly goal, his third of the year, assisted by Chandler Stephenson and Travis Boyd in the second period. The Capitals took the lead with an Alex Ovechkin goal, his thirteenth of the season, passed from Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson. The Avalanche tied it again in the third period with a Colin Wilson goal, his fifth of the year, courtesy of Matt Calvert and Ian Cole. In overtime, Washington won 3-2 with a Backstrom power play goal, his fifth of the campaign, powered by John Carlson and Wilson. The three stars belonged to Backstrom, Wilson, and Copley (24 for 26 in saves).

Southwest to Anaheim, as the Ducks welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Garret Sparks and John Gibson are between the pipes. Toronto began in the first period with a Patrick Marleau goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri. Anaheim tied it in the second period with a Pontus Aberg goal, his sixth of the year, via Nick Ritchie and Adam Henrique. The Maple Leafs won 2-1 in overtime with a Morgan Rielly goal, his ninth of the campaign, with a lone assist by Mitchell Marner. The three stars went to Sparks (38 for 39 in saves), Rielly, and Marleau.

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the St. Louis Blues. Jake Allen and Marc-Andre Fleury guard the cages. Vegas struck first in the first period with a William Carrier goal, his third of the season, fueled by Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Shea Theodore. St. Louis tied it on a Ryan O'Reilly goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz. The Blues took the lead with another O'Reilly goal in the second period, his second of the game and tenth of the season, coming off of Schwartz and Tarasenko. St. Louis added on with a Brayden Schenn goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Joel Edmundson and Tyler Bozak. The Blues extended the lead as Oskar Sundqvist scored his fourth of the season, thanks to Vince Dunn. The final held from here at 4-1 with the three stars handed to O'Reilly, Allen (32 for 33 in saves), and Schwartz, while Tarasenko gets an honorable mention.
