NHL 2018/19 - Day 68

Four games on for tonight, beginning with...

The New York Islanders hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins. Casey DeSmith and Robin Lehner are in the creases. New York got going in the second period with an Anthony Beauvillier goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal. Pittsburgh tied it in the third period with a Derick Brassard goal, his fourth of the year, made possible by Jake Guentzel. The tie went to a shootout, where Phil Kessel and Guentzel lifted the Penguins 2-1 over Bailey and the Islanders. The three stars were Guentzel, Bailey, and DeSmith (25 for 26 in saves).

Over in Detroit, the Red Wings welcome the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Jimmy Howard are the veterans in goal. Detroit began in the first period with a Dennis Cholowski goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Christoffer Ehn and Jacob de la Rose. The Red Wings added on in the second period with a Frans Nielsen goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Thomas Vanek and Andreas Athanasiou. Detroit extended the lead on an unassisted Dylan Larkin goal, his twelfth of the season. Los Angeles got on the board in the third period with an Anze Kopitar goal, his eighth of the year, assisted by Alex Iafallo and Dustin Brown. This only made it 3-1, the final, with the three stars given to Howard (42 for 43 in saves), Nielsen, and Larkin.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning bring in the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Louis Domingue are set to start in goal. New York started in the first period with a Kevin Hayes goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Ryan Strome and Vladislav Namestnikov. Tampa Bay tied it on a Steven Stamkos power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Victor Hedman and J.T. Miller. The Rangers retook the lead with another Hayes goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, with a lone assist by Jimmy Vesey. The Lightning retied it on a Stamkos power play goal in the second period, his second of the game and fourteenth of the year, with helpers from Hedman and Brayden Point. Tampa Bay pulled ahead with a Ryan McDonagh goal, his third of the season, via Point and Nikita Kucherov. The Lightning added on in the third period with an Anthony Cirelli goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Erik Cernak. Tampa Bay extended the lead as Stamkos finished his hat trick on his fifteenth of the season, thanks to Ondrej Palat and Braydon Coburn. New York got one back with a Jesper Fast goal, his third of the year, fueled by Filip Chytil. The Lightning capped it at 6-3 with a Cirelli empty net goal, his second of the game and eighth of the campaign, set up by Alex Killorn and Miller. The three stars were given to Stamkos, Hayes, and Cirelli, while Hedman, Point, and Miller get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks host the New Jersey Devils. Keith Kinkaid and Martin Jones are the masked men. New Jersey struck first in the first period with a Drew Stafford goal, passed from Damon Severson and Andy Greene. San Jose tied it on a Timo Meier goal, his fifteenth of the season, assisted by Tomas Hertl. The Sharks took the lead with a Joe Pavelski goal, his twentieth of the year, courtesy of Brenden Dillon and Erik Karlsson. San Jose added on in the second period with a Radim Simek goal, via Lukas Radil and Brent Burns. The Devils got one back with a Greene goal, helped along by Kyle Palmieri and Nico Hischier. The Sharks replied with a Meier goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the season, guided in by Joonas Donskoi. San Jose extended the lead in the third period as Hertl scored his ninth of the year on the power play, thanks to Kevin Labanc and Pavelski. The final held at 5-2, with the three stars being Meier, Pavelski, and Hertl, while Greene gets an honorable mention.
