NHL 2018/19 - Day 71

Eight games will be played tonight, beginning in...

Buffalo, as the Sabres host the Arizona Coyotes. Darcy Kuemper and Carter Hutton make the starts in goal. Buffalo started in the first period with a Casey Mittelstadt goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Conor Sheary. The Sabres added on with a Jeff Skinner goal, his twenty-second of the year, via Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart. Arizona got on the board with a Christian Fischer goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Richard Panik. Buffalo replied in the third period with an unassisted Evan Rodrigues goal, his second of the year. This stood for a 3-1 win, with the three stars going to Hutton (25 for 26 in saves), Skinner, and Rodrigues.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Sergei Bobrovsky are the struggling starters in goal. Los Angeles opened with a Dustin Brown goal, his ninth of the season, courtesy of Alex Iafallo. Columbus tied it on a Lukas Sedlak goal, assisted by Oliver Bjorkstrand and Alexander Wennberg. The Blue Jackets took the lead with and Artemi Panarin goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Pierre-Luc Dubois and Cam Atkinson. Columbus added on in the second period with a Panarin power play goal, his second of the game and ninth of the season, powered by Seth Jones and Atkinson. The Blue Jackets extended the lead as Josh Anderson scored his thirteenth of the year, thanks to Nick Foligno and David Savard. This led to the eventual 4-1 final score, with the three stars awarded to Panarin, Bobrovsky (29 for 30 in saves), and Atkinson.

Up in Montreal, the Canadiens host the Carolina Hurricanes. Petr Mrazek and Carey Price are the masked men. Carolina got going in the second period with an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Brett Pesce and Jaccob Slavin. Montreal tied it on a Matthew Peca goal, his second of the year, via Michael Chaput and Kenny Agostino. The Canadiens took the lead on a Jeff Petry goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Max Domi. The Hurricanes tied it in the third period with another Svechnikov goal, his second of the game and eighth of the year, passed from Justin Williams and Lucas Wallmark. Montreal retook the lead on a Brendan Galllagher goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Phillip Danault. The Canadiens added on with an Artturi Lehkonen goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Danault and Agostino. Carolina replied with a Slavin goal, his third of the season, with a lone assist by Phillip Di Giuseppe. Montreal shot back on an Andrew Shaw goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Shea Weber and Jonathan Drouin. The Hurricanes countered on a Sebastian Aho goal, his ninth of the season, helped along by Teuvo Teravainen and Pesce. The Canadiens iced it at 6-4 with an unassisted empty net goal by Petry, his second of the game and seventh of the year. The three stars went to Petry, Svechnikov, and Danault, while Agostino, Slavin, and Pesce earn the honorable mentions.

South to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Andrei Vasilevskiy tend the twines. Toronto led off in the first period with a Kasperi Kapanen goal, his twelfth of the season, going in unassisted. Tampa Bay tied it on a shorthanded Anthony Cirelli goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Ryan Callahan. The Lightning took the lead with a Nikita Kucherov power play goal in the second period, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Victor Hedman and J.T. Miller. Tampa Bay added on with an Alex Killorn goal, his seventh of the year, via Cirelli and Miller. The Lightning extended the lead as Tyler Johnson scored his thirteenth of the campaign, with the help of Kucherov and Dan Girardi. This gave them a 4-1 win eventually, with the three stars given to Vasilevskiy (48 for 49 in saves), Cirelli, and Kucherov, while Miller takes an honorable mention.

Northwest to Nashville, as the Predators host the Vancouver Canucks. Anders Nilsson is mismatched with Pekka Rinne in goal. Nashville began in the first period with a Ryan Hartman goal, his ninth of the season, with a lone assist by Dan Hamhuis. The Predators added on with a Nick Bonino goal, his fifth of the year, via Colton Sissons and Roman Josi. Vancouver got on the board with a shorthanded Jay Beagle goal, set up by Markus Granlund. Nashville answered in the second period on a Calle Jarnkrok goal, his seventh of the season, passed from Kyle Turris and Yannick Weber. The Canucks got one back with a Brock Boeser power play goal in the third period, his tenth of the year, powered by Alexander Edler and Elias Pettersson. Vancouver tied it on a shorthanded Bo Horvat goal, his fifteenth of the season, guided in by Nikolay Goldobin and Ben Hutton. The Predators took the 4-3 win in overtime on a Sissons goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Bonino and Mattias Ekholm. the three stars were Sissons, Bonino, and Horvat.

Further along, the Winnipeg Jets welcome the Edmonton Oilers. Cam Talbot and Connor Hellebuyck are between the pipes. Edmonton struck first in the first period with a Ryan Spooner goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Leon Draisaitl. Winnipeg tied it on a Mathieu Perreault power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Bryan Little and Josh Morrissey. The Jets took the lead on a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his tenth of the season, assisted by Mark Scheifele and Dustin Byfuglien. Winnipeg added on in the second period with a Patrik Laine goal, his twenty-second of the year, passed from Byfuglien and Bryan Little. The Oilers got one back with a Darnell Nurse goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Alex Chiasson and Connor McDavid. Edmonton tied it on a Jujhar Khaira goal, his second of the year, with helpers from Jesse Puljujarvi and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers pulled ahead with a Chiasson power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, with assists provided by McDavid and Draisaitl. The Jets retied it on a Scheifele goal in the third period, his eighteenth of the year, fueled by Blake Wheeler and Tyler Myers. Winnipeg won 5-4 in overtime with a Morrissey goal, his fourth of the campaign, guided in by Scheifele and Wheeler. The three stars were Morrissey, Scheifele, and Chiasson, while Little, Wheeler, McDavid, Draisaitl, and Byfuglien get the honorable mentions.

Back stateside, the Minnesota Wild host the Florida Panthers. James Reimer and Devan Dubnyk are in the creases. Florida kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Denis Malgin goal, his second of the season, passed from MacKenzie Weegar and Frank Vatrano. Minnesota tied it on a Nino Niederreiter goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Ryan Suter and Matt Dumba. The Wild took the lead in the second period on another Niederreiter goal, his second of the game and seventh of the campaign, with a lone assist by Suter. Minnesota added on with an Eric Staal goal, his twelfth of the season, via Mikael Granlund and Jared Spurgeon. The Wild extended the lead in the third period as Zach Parise scored his fifteenth of the year, thanks to Niederreiter and Suter, the latter earning a sock trick. Minnesota padded the lead on a Jonas Brodin goal, his fourth of the campaign, assisted by Spurgeon and Parise. This stood for a 5-1 win, with the three stars being Niederreiter, Suter, and Parise, while Spurgeon gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Dallas Stars. Anton Khudobin and Martin Jones draw the starts in goal. Dallas dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Radek Faksa goal, his fifth of the season, guided in by Julius Honka and Valeri Nichushkin. San Jose tied it on a Timo Meier goal, his seventeenth of the year, via Brent Burns and Logan Couture. The Sharks took the lead in the third period with a Meier goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the season, assisted by Couture and Erik Karlsson. San Jose added on with a Joe Thornton goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Radim Simek and Marcus Sorensen. The Stars got one back with a Miro Heiskanen goal, his seventh of the campaign, helped along by Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars being Meier, Couture, and Jones (20 for 22 in saves).
