NHL 2018/19 - Day 69

We've got ten games on for today's schedule, the first in...

Boston, as the Bruins host the Arizona Coyotes. Darcy Kuemper and Tuukka Rask man the nets. Arizona started in the first period with a Nick Schmaltz power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Clayton Keller. The Coyotes added on with a Nick Cousins goal, his third of the year, guided in by Alex Goligoski and Josh Archibald. Boston got on the board in the second period with a Danton Heinen goal, his fourth of the season, via Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Ryan Donato. The Bruins tied it with a David Pastrnak goal, his twenty-first of the year, fueled by Brad Marchand and David Krejci. Boston took the lead on a Marchand goal, his ninth of the season, helped along by Pastrnak and Krejci. The Bruins extended the lead as Marchand scored his second of the game and tenth of the year, thanks to Krejci, who got a sock trick, and Pastrnak. Arizona got one back with a Michael Bunting goal, going in unassisted. This was as close as it got, the Bruins winning 4-3 in the end. The three stars went to Marchand, Pastrnak, and Krejci.

Along to Buffalo, where the Sabres welcome the Los Angeles Kings. Calvin Petersen and Linus Ullmark are the backups in goal. Los Angeles opened in the first period with a Jake Muzzin goal, his second of the season, via Anze Kopitar and Alex Iafallo. Buffalo tied it on an unassisted Zemgus Girgensons goal, his third of the year. The Kings took the lead in the second period with a Matt Luff goal, his sixth of the season, with a lone assist by Muzzin. Los Angeles added on with an Adrian Kempe goal, his fifth of the year, passed from Brendan Leipsic and Derek Forbort. The Sabres got one back in the third period with a Jack Eichel power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Rasmus Ristolainen and Sam Reinhart. Buffalo tied it on a Johan Larsson goal, his second of the year, assisted by Lawrence Pilut and Evan Rodrigues. The Sabres won 4-3 in overtime with a Jeff Skinner power play goal, his twenty-first of the campaign, with assists provided by Ristolainen and Eichel. The three stars belonged to Eichel, Ristolainen, and Muzzin.

Down in Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Petr Mrazek are in the creases. Toronto led off in the first period with a Tyler Ennis goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Frederik Gauthier and Travis Dermott. Carolina tied it in the second period with a Justin Williams power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Sebastian Aho and Victor Rask. The Maple Leafs retook the lead on a Morgan Rielly goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Toronto added on in the third period with a Patrick Marleau goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Nylander and Nazem Kadri. The Maple Leafs extended the lead as John Tavares scored his nineteenth of the campaign, with the help of Mitchell Marner and Jake Gardiner. This stood for a 4-1 win, with the three stars being Nylander, Andersen (29 for 30 in saves), and Rielly.

Backtracking to Columbus, as the Blue Jackets host the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Joonas Korpisalo are set to start in goal. Columbus began in the first period with a Seth Jones goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Artemi Panarin and Cam Atkinson. Vancouver tied it in the third period on a Josh Leivo goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Christopher Tanev and Elias Pettersson. The Blue Jackets took the lead back on an Oliver Bjorkstrand goal, his third of the season, fueled by Scott Harrington and Pierre-Luc Dubois. The Canucks retied it on a Pettersson goal, his sixteenth of the year, guided in by Leivo and Alexander Edler. Vancouver pulled ahead with a Jake Virtanen goal, his tenth of the campaign, helped along by Tyler Motte and Nikolay Goldobin. This made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Pettersson, Leivo, and Virtanen.

Over in DC, the Washington Capitals welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Jonathan Bernier is mismatched with Braden Holtby in goal. Washington struck first in the first period with a Brett Connolly power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by John Carlson and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Capitals added on with a Travis Boyd goal, his second of the year, coming off of Nic Dowd and Dmitrij Jaskin. Washington extended the lead as Alex Ovechkin scored his twenty-third of the season, thanks to Nicklas Backstrom and Michal Kempny. The Capitals padded the lead in the second period with another Ovechkin goal, his second of the game and twenty-fourth of the year, helped along by Carlson and Backstrom. Washington chased Bernier with a T.J. Oshie power play goal, his tenth of the season, with assists provided by Backstrom, who got a sock trick, and Kuznetsov. Jimmy Howard came on in relief. Detroit got on the board in the third period with a Dylan Larkin goal, his thirteenth of the year, passed from Gustav Nyquist and Nick Jensen. The Capitals shot back with an Ovechkin goal, completing his hat trick on his twenty-fifth of the season, courtesy of Christian Djoos and Backstrom. The Red Wings pulled back on a Nyquist goal, his eighth of the year, with a lone helper by Justin Abdelkader. This only made it 6-2, with the three stars awarded to Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Nyquist, while Carlson and Kuznetsov get the honorable mentions.

Out west, the St. Louis Blues bring in the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo and Jake Allen protect the nets. Florida was first to score in the first period with an Evgenii Dadonov goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Jonathan Huberdeau. St. Louis tied it in the third period with an Ivan Barbashev goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Robert Thomas and Oskar Sundqvist. The Blues took the lead on a David Perron goal, his ninth of the season, via Jaden Schwartz. St. Louis added on with another Perron goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, fueled by Schwartz and Brayden Schenn. The Panthers got one back on a MacKenzie Weegar goal, made possible by Jared McCann and Mark Pysyk. Florida tied it with a Mike Hoffman goal, his fifteenth of the season, helped along by Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov. The Blues reclaimed the lead with a Schenn goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Vince Dunn and Perron. This stood for their 4-3 win, with the three stars given to Perron, Schenn, and Huberdeau, while Schwartz takes an honorable mention.

In Tennessee, the Nashville Predators host the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson and Pekka Rinne are the veterans in goal. Ottawa kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Zack Smith goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Ryan Dzingel and Cody Ceci. Nashville tied it on an Austin Watson goal, his sixth of the year, made possible by Mattias Ekholm and Colton Sissons. The Predators took the lead in the second period with a Ryan Ellis goal, his third of the season, via Roman Josi and Ryan Johansen. Nashville added on with an unassisted Craig Smith goal in the third period, his ninth of the year. This produced the 3-1 final score, with the three stars being Rinne (25 for 26 in saves), Ellis, and Smith.

Up in Canada, the Winnipeg Jets welcome the Chicago Blackhawks. Cam Ward and Laurent Brossoit are the backups in goal. Winnipeg drew first blood in the first period with a Mark Scheifele power play goal, his seventeenth of the season, powered by Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler. The Jets added on with a Tyler Myers goal, his third of the year, guided in by Jack Roslovic. Winnipeg extended the lead as Kyle Connor scored his twelfth of the season, thanks to Patrik Laine. The Jets padded the lead in the second period with another Connor goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the year coming on the power play from Scheifele and Byfuglien. Chicago got on the board with a Dylan Strome goal, his seventh of the season, via Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith. The Blackhawks got closer with a Dominik Kahun goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Henri Jokiharju and David Kampf. Chicago pulled closer with an Alex DeBrincat goal in the third period, his twelfth of the season, with a lone assist by Kane. Winnipeg answered with a Mathieu Perreault power play goal, his fourth of the year, with assists from Nikolaj Ehlers and Myers. The Jets iced it at 6-3 with a Brandon Tanev empty net goal, his sixth of the campaign, set up by Byfuglien, who earned a sock trick. The three stars were Connor, Scheifele, and Byfuglien, while Myers and Kane get the honorable mentions.

Back stateside, the Minnesota Wild bring in the Montreal Canadiens. Antti Niemi is mismatched with Devan Dubnyk in goal. Minnesota got going in the first period with a Nino Niederreiter goal, his fifth of the season, via Jonas Brodin and Zach Parise. The Wild added on in the second period with a Matt Dumba power play goal, his eleventh of the year, powered by Mikael Granlund and Parise. Minnesota extended the lead on a shorthanded Charlie Coyle goal, his fifth of the season, set up by Marcus Foligno. The Wild padded the lead with an Eric Staal goal, his eleventh of the year, with the help of Granlund. Minnesota continued as Jared Spurgeon scored his fourth of the season on the power play, thanks to Jason Zucker and Niederreiter. The Wild struck again in the third period with another Dumba power play goal, his second of the game and twelfth of the year, with assists provided by Granlund, who got a sock trick, and Ryan Suter. Montreal got on the board with a Jeff Petry goal, his fifth of the season, guided in by Michael Chaput and Andrew Shaw. Minnesota countered with a Parise power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, assisted by Spurgeon and Suter. This made it 7-1, the final, with the three stars awarded to Parise, Dumba, and Granlund, while Spurgeon, Niederreiter, and Suter take the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Colorado Avalanche host the Edmonton Oilers. Mikko Koskinen and Semyon Varlamov are between the pipes. Edmonton dented the scoreboard in the first period with a Kyle Brodziak goal, his third of the season, with a lone assist by Darnell Nurse. The Oilers added on in the second period with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Connor McDavid and Matt Benning. Edmonton extended the lead as Nugent-Hopkins scored his second of the game and tenth of the season, thanks to Milan Lucic. Philipp Grubauer replaced Varlamov in goal. The Oilers padded the lead with a McDavid goal, his seventeenth of the year, passed from Leon Draisaitl and Adam Larsson. Colorado got on the board with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his thirteenth of the season, guided in by Tyson Barrie and Gabriel Landeskog. Edmonton answered with a Draisaitl goal, his sixteenth of the year, coming off of Zack Kassian and Brodziak. The Avalanche pulled back in the third period with a Colin Wilson power play goal, his eighth of the season, with assists provided by Rantanen and Landeskog. The Oilers replied with a Nurse power play goal, his fourth of the year, made possible by Nugent-Hopkins and Draisaitl. Colorado got one back with a Rantanen goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the season, with a lone helper by Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche pulled closer on a Landeskog goal, his eighteenth of the year, dished from Rantanen and MacKinnon. This only made it 6-4, the final, with the three stars given to Nugent-Hopkins, Draisaitl, and Rantanen, while Landeskog, MacKinnon, Nurse, McDavid, and Brodziak get the honorable mentions.
