NHL 2018/19 - Day 72

Eight games on again today, beginning in...

New Jersey, as the Devils host the Vegas Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury and Cory Schneider are the masked men. Vegas started in the first period with an Alex Tuch goal, his eleventh of the season, via Oscar Lindberg and and Nate Schmidt. The Golden Knights added on with a William Karlsson goal, his twelfth of the year, guided in by Jonathan Marchessault and Brayden McNabb. Vegas extended the lead as William Carrier scored his sixth of the season, coming off of Ryan Reaves. New Jersey got on the board with a Travis Zajac power play goal in the second period, his tenth of the year, powered by Marcus Johansson and Jesper Bratt. The Golden Knights replied on a Karlsson power play goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, passed from Reilly Smith and Marchessault. The Devils answered with a Miles Wood goal, his third of the year, assisted by Blake Coleman and Zajac. New Jersey got closer in the third period with a Kyle Palmieri goal, his seventeenth of the season, going in unassisted. The Devils tied it on an unassisted Brett Seney goal, his third of the year. New Jersey won 5-4 in overtime with a Nico Hischier goal, his seventh of the campaign, with a lone helper by Johansson. The three stars went to Zajac, Johansson, and Karlsson, while Marchessault gets an honorable mention.

In Manhattan, the New York Rangers welcome the Arizona Coyotes. Adin Hill is mismatched with Henrik Lundqvist in goal. New York opened in the first period with a Pavel Buchnevich power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Filip Chytil and Jimmy Vesey. The Rangers added on with a Kevin Hayes power play goal, his eighth of the year, with a lone assist by Mats Zuccarello. New York extended the lead as Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play in the second period, his tenth of the season made possible by Neal Pionk and Hayes. Arizona got on the board with a Jordan Oesterle power play goal, his second of the year, with helpers from Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz. The Coyotes got closer with a Josh Archibald goal, his third of the season, guided in by Derek Stepan and Alex Goligoski. Arizona tied it as Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored his third of the year, thanks to Keller and Nick Cousins. The Coyotes won 4-3 in overtime on a Stepan goal, his seventh of the campaign, helped along by Schmaltz. The three stars were Stepan, Schmaltz, and Keller, while Hayes earns an honorable mention.

Over in Pittsburgh, the Penguins host the Boston Bruins. Jaroslav Halak and Casey DeSmith draw the starts in goal. Pittsburgh led off in the first period with a Derek Grant goal, his second of the season, made possible by Matt Cullen and Garrett Wilson. The Penguins added on with a Phil Kessel goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Evgeni Malkin and Zach Aston-Reese in the second period. Boston got on the board with a Brandon Carlo goal, fueled by Chris Wagner and Sean Kuraly. Pittsburgh countered with a shorthanded Aston-Reese goal, his third of the season, set up by Riley Sheahan and Brian Dumoulin. The Bruins got one back in the third period with a Wagner goal, his third of the year, guided in by Charlie McAvoy and Kuraly. Boston tied it as David Krejci scored his fifth of the season, thanks to David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand. The Penguins reclaimed the lead on a Jake Guentzel goal, his thirteenth of the year, assisted by Kris Letang and Sidney Crosby. Pittsburgh capped it at 5-3 with an Aston-Reese empty net goal, his second of the game and fourth of the campaign, helped along by Crosby and Jack Johnson. The three stars were awarded to Aston-Reese, Crosby, and Wagner, while Kuraly gets an honorable mention.

To the west, the Detroit Red Wings bring in the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson and Jimmy Howard protect the nets. Ottawa began in the first period with a Chris Tierney goal, his fourth of the season, passed from Ryan Dzingel. The Senators added on with a Thomas Chabot goal, his ninth of the year, via Colin White and Mikkel Boedker. Detroit got on the board with a Luke Glendening goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Tyler Bertuzzi and Michael Rasmussen. The Red Wings tied it in the second period with a Dylan Larkin goal, his fourteenth of the year, fueled by Frans Nielsen and Niklas Kronwall. Ottawa retook the lead in the third period with a Mark Stone goal, his sixteenth of the season, made possible by Stefan Elliott. The Senators iced it at 4-2 with a power play empty net goal by Tierney, his second of the game and fifth of the year, powered by Chabot and Dzingel. The three stars belonged to Tierney, Chabot, and Dzingel.

Back southeast, the Carolina Hurricanes host the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby faces a lesser foe in Scott Darling in goal. Carolina struck first in the first period with a Jordan Martinook goal, his eighth of the season, helped along by Sebastian Aho and Calvin de Haan. Washington tied it on an Alex Ovechkin goal, his twenty-sixth of the year, assisted by Jonas Siegenthaler and Nic Dowd. The Hurricanes retook the lead with a shorthanded Aho goal, his tenth of the season, set up by Teuvo Teravainen. Carolina added on in the second period with an Aho power play goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the year, powered by Justin Faulk and Teravainen. The Hurricanes extended the lead as Teravainen scored his sixth of the season on the power play, with the help of Andrei Svechnikov and Aho. The Capitals got one back on a Tom Wilson goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Evgeny Kuznetsov. Washington got closer with an Ovechkin goal, his twenty-seventh of the season and second of the game, passed from Dowd and John Carlson. The Capitals tied it as Travis Boyd scored his third of the year, thanks to Carlson and Dowd, the latter earning a sock trick. Washington pulled ahead in the third period with an Ovechkin power play goal to cap his hat trick with his twenty-eighth of the season, with assists provided by Carlson, who got a sock trick, and Nicklas Backstrom. Carolina retied it on an unassisted Justin Williams power play goal, his seventh of the year. The tie went to a shootout, where Backstrom and Jakub Vrana overpowered Dougie Hamilton to give the Capitals a 6-5 win. The three stars were Ovechkin, Aho, and Teravainen, while Carlson and Dowd take the honorable mentions.

Moving along, the St. Louis Blues welcome the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer is mismatched with Jake Allen in goal. St. Louis drew first blood in the first period with a Colton Parayko goal, his sixth of the season, fueled by Ryan O'Reilly. Colorado tied it on a Sven Andrighetto goal, his third of the year, via J.T. Compher and Tyson Jost. The Avalanche took the lead on a Matt Calvert goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by Carl Soderberg and Matt Nieto. The Blues retied it on an Ivan Barbashev goal, his fifth of the year, made possible by Jay Bouwmeester and Jaden Schwartz. St. Louis retook the lead in the third period with another Parayko goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, assisted by Vince Dunn and Tyler Bozak. Colorado retied it on a Compher power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. The Blues won 4-3 in overtime with an O'Reilly shorthanded goal, his thirteenth of the campaign, set up by Robert Bortuzzo. The three stars were named as O'Reilly, Parayko, and Compher.

Next up, the Chicago Blackhawks host the Winnipeg Jets. Laurent Brossoit and Corey Crawford are in the creases. Winnipeg kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Mark Scheifele power play goal, his nineteenth of the season, powered by Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien. Chicago tied it on a Jonathan Toews goal, his fifteenth of the year, guided in by Duncan Keith and Brandon Saad. The Blackhawks took the lead in the second period with another Toews goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the season, via Saad and Carl Dahlstrom. The Jets retied it on a Patrik Laine goal, his twenty-third of the year, fueled by Bryan Little and Josh Morrissey. Winnipeg pulled ahead with a Mathieu Perreault goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Scheifele and Wheeler. Chicago tied it in the third period as Erik Gustafsson scored his sixth of the year, with the help of Keith and Toews. The Jets won 4-3 in overtime on a Scheifele goal, his second of the game and twentieth of the campaign, set up by Morrissey and Wheeler, the latter earning a sock trick. The three stars were handed to Scheifele, Wheeler, and Toews, while Morrissey, Saad, and Keith take the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Edmonton Oilers bring in the Philadelphia Flyers. Anthony Stolarz and Mikko Koskinen are the lesser known goalies. Edmonton was first to score in the first period with an Alex Chiasson goal, his fourteenth of the season, courtesy of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. The Oilers added on with a McDavid goal in the second period, his eighteenth of the year, assisted by Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse. Edmonton extended the lead as Adam Larsson scored, thanks to Ryan Spooner and Nurse. Philadelphia got on the board in the third period with a Sean Couturier goal, his thirteenth of the season, made possible by Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux. The Oilers iced it at 4-1 with a McDavid empty net goal, his second of the game and nineteenth of the year, set up by Draisaitl. The three stars went to McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nurse.
