2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 1 Day 5

Series have shifted to the lesser seed's venues, beginning with...

The Pittsburgh Penguins hosting the New York Islanders. Robin Lehner and Matt Murray are in the creases. Pittsburgh started in the first period with a Garrett Wilson goal, via Marcus Pettersson and Justin Schultz. New York tied it on a Jordan Eberle goal, his third of the postseason, courtesy of Ryan Pulock and Mathew Barzal. The Islanders took the lead with a Brock Nelson goal, his second of the playoffs, coming off of Tom Kuhnhackl. New York added on in the third period with a Leo Komarov goal, made possible by Anthony Beauvillier and Valtteri Filppula. The Islanders iced it at 4-1 with an Anders Lee empty net goal, set up by Filppula and Adam Pelech. The three stars were Nelson, Lehner (25 for 26 in saves), and Filppula. The Islanders are on the brink of advancing with a 3-0 series lead.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Sergei Bobrovsky protect the nets. Columbus got going in the second period on a Matt Duchene goal, his second of the postseason, assisted by Cam Atkinson and Zach Werenski. The Blues Jackets added on with an Oliver Bjorkstand power play goal, powered by Seth Jones and Alexandre Texier. Tampa Bay got on the board in the third period with an Ondrej Palat goal, helped along by Erik Cernak and Tyler Johnson. Columbus iced it at 3-1 with an Atkinson empty net goal, his second of the playoffs, set up by Artemi Panarin and Scott Harrington. The three stars were Bobrovsky (30 for 31 in saves), Atkinson, and Bjorkstrand. Columbus is one win away from advancing with a 3-0 series lead.

Along to St. Louis, as the Blues bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington are in the blue paint. St. Louis opened in the first period with a David Perron power play goal, his second of the postseason, powered by Alex Pietrangelo and the goalie Binnington. Winnipeg tied it in the second period on a Kevin Hayes goal, passed from Mathieu Perreault and Josh Morrissey. The Jets took the lead with a Patrik Laine goal, his third of the playoffs guided in by Jacob Trouba and Bryan Little. Winnipeg added on with a Kyle Connor power play goal, with assists provided by Blake Wheeler and Laine. The Blues got one back in the third period with a Vladimir Tarasenko power play goal, with a lone helper from Vince Dunn. The Jets countered with a Brandon Tanev goal, via Andrew Copp and Dustin Byfuglien. Winnipeg extended the lead as Byfuglien scored, thanks to Copp. St. Louis pulled back on an Alexander Steen goal, assisted by Pietrangelo and Joel Edmundson. The Jets replied on a Connor goal, his second of the game, made possible by Mark Scheifele. This made it 6-3, the final, with the three stars being Connor, Laine, and Byfuglien, while Copp and Pietrangelo get the honorable mentions. The Blues remain ahead 2-1 in the series.

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights host the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Marc-Andre Fleury are between the pipes. Vegas kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Mark Stone goal, his fourth of the postseason, via Nate Schmidt and Deryk Engelland. The Golden Knights added on with a Max Pacioretty power play goal, his second of the playoffs, powered by Shea Theodore and Paul Stastny. San Jose got on the board with a Kevin Labanc goal, passed from Joe Thornton and Marcus Sorensen. Vegas replied in the second period with a Stastny goal, courtesy of Pacioretty and Stone. The Golden Knights extended the lead as Stastny scored his second of the game on the power play, with the help of Stone and Theodore. Vegas padded the lead in the third period on Stone's second of the game and fifth of the postseason, assisted by Jonathan Marchessault and Stastny. The Sharks pulled one back with a Logan Couture power play goal, his second of the playoffs, made possible by Erik Karlsson and the goalie Jones. San Jose got closer with a Timo Meier goal, helped along by Gustav Nyquist. The Golden Knights countered on a Stone goal, completing his hat trick on his sixth of the postseason. The final remained at 6-3, with the three stars awarded to Stone, Stastny, and Theodore, while Pacioretty gets an honorable mention. Vegas has taken the series lead at 2-1.
