2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 1 Day 9

Three games are on tonight, beginning with...

The Carolina Hurricanes hosting the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby and Petr Mrazek man the nets. Carolina started in the first period with a Warren Foegele goal, his third of the postseason, courtesy of Jaccob Slavin and Justin Williams. Washington tied it in the second period with an Alex Ovechkin power play goal, his second of the playoffs, powered by Dmitry Orlov and Lars Eller. The Hurricanes took the lead on a Teuvo Teravainen goal, assisted by Nino Niederreiter and Sebastian Aho. This made it 2-1, the eventual final, with the three stars being Mrazek (30 for 31 in saves), Teravainen, and Foegele. The series heads north again tied at 2.

Northwest to Winnipeg, where the Jets welcome the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and Connor Hellebuyck are the masked men. Winnipeg opened in the first period with an Adam Lowry goal, via Brandon Tanev and Andrew Copp. The Jets added on with a Kevin Hayes goal, his second of the postseason, fueled by Dustin Byfuglien. St. Louis got on the board with a Ryan O'Reilly power play goal in the third period, his second of the playoffs, powered by David Perron and Brayden Schenn. The Blues tied it on a Schenn goal, passed from Oskar Sundqvist and Jay Bouwmeester. St. Louis won 3-2 with a Jaden Schwartz goal, with a lone helper by Tyler Bozak. The three stars were Schenn, Schwartz, and Binnington (29 for 31 in saves). The Blues lead the series 3-2 as they head home.

Out in California, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Vegas Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury and Martin Jones are the goalies. San Jose struck first in the first period with a Tomas Hertl goal, his third of the postseason, coming off of Erik Karlsson and Gustav Nyquist. The Sharks added on in with a Logan Couture goal, his third of the playoffs, via Timo Meier and Erik Karlsson. Vegas got on the board with a Reilly Smith power play goal, powered by Colin Miller and William Karlsson. San Jose replied with a Barclay Goodrow goal, helped along by Justin Braun and Joakim Ryan. The Golden Knights got one back with a Jonathan Marchessault power play goal, his second of the postseason, with helpers from Miller and William Karlsson. The Sharks answered on a Hertl power play goal, his second of the game and fourth of the playoffs, courtesy of Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton. San Jose iced it at 5-2 with a Pavelski empty net goal, his second of the postseason, set up by Evander Kane. The three stars were Hertl, Pavelski, and Erik Karlsson, while Miller and William Karlsson earned the honorable mentions.
