It's another busy Sunday with ten games on. First up...
The Pittsburgh Penguins host the Carolina Hurricanes. Antti Raanta and Tristan Jarry are in goal. Pittsburgh led off in the first period with a Brian Boyle goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Teddy Blueger and John Marino. The Penguins added on with a Danton Heinen goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Mike Matheson and Evan Rodrigues. Carolina got one the board in the third period with a Brett Pesce goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Vincent Trocheck and Brady Skjei. Pittsburgh answered with a Sidney Crosby empty net goal, his twentieth of the year, set up by Boyle and Kris Letang. The Hurricanes got one back with a Sebastian Aho goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, assisted by Jordan Staal and Teuvo Teravainen. The Penguins iced it at 4-2 with a Zach Aston-Reese empty net goal, his second of the year, with helpers from Jeff Carter and Blueger. The three stars were Boyle, Blueger, and Jarry (41 for 43 in saves).
Up in Hamilton, the Buffalo Sabres welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Heritage Classic. Petr Mrazek and Craig Anderson start in goal. Toronto got going in the second period with an Ondrej Kase goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of William Nylander and John Tavares. Buffalo tied it on a Peyton Krebs goal, his fifth of the year, courtesy of Vinnie Hinostroza and Robert Hagg. The Maple Leafs retook the lead with an Auston Matthews goal, his forty-fifth of the season, via Alexander Kerfoot and T.J. Brodie. The Sabres took the lead with a Hinostroza goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Tage Thompson and Mattias Samuelsson. Buffalo pulled ahead with a Hinostroza goal in the third period, his second of the game and tenth of the season, going in unassisted. The Sabres added on with a Krebs goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, guided in by Dylan Cozens and Kyle Okposo. Buffalo iced it at 5-2 with a Thompson shorthanded empty net goal, his twenty-fourth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Hinostroza, Krebs, and Thompson.
At the regular time, the Philadelphia Flyers bring in the Montreal Canadiens. Samuel Montembeault and Carter Hart are the goalies. Philadelphia began in the first period with a Kevin Hayes goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Travis Sanheim and James van Riemsdyk. Montreal tied it in the second period with a Nick Suzuki power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, powered by Cole Caufield and Chris Wideman. The Flyers retook the lead in the second period with a Claude Giroux goal, his eighteenth of the season, made possible by Morgan Frost and Travis Konecny. The Canadiens tied it again with another Suzuki goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the year, passed from Wideman and Mike Hoffman. Philadelphia gained the lead on a Cam Atkinson goal, his twenty-second of the season, fueled by Joel Farabee and Derick Brassard. Montreal tied it in the third period on a Rem Pitlick shorthanded goal, his twelfth of the year, set up by Ben Chiarot. The Canadiens won 4-3 in overtime with a Caufield goal, his ninth of the campaign, with a lone helper by Pitlick. The three stars were handed to Suzuki, Caufield, and Pitlick.
Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets host the Vegas Golden Knights. Logan Thompson and Elvis Merzlikins man the nets. Columbus opened in the first period with a Patrik Laine power play goal, his twenty-third of the season, powered by Gustav Nyquist and Jack Roslovic. Vegas tied it on a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, going in unassisted. The Golden Knights took the lead on a William Carrier goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Nicolas Roy and Chandler Stephenson. The Blue Jackets retied it on a Cole Sillinger goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Oliver Bjorkstrand and Dean Kukan. Columbus took the lead on a Bjorkstrand goal, his twenty-first of the season, via Maax Domi and Kukan. The Blue Jackets added on in the second period with a Sillinger goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, with helpers from Bjorkstrand and Andrew Peeke. Columbus extended the lead as Sillinger finished his hat trick on his eleventh of the season, thanks to Domi and Bjorkstrand. Vegas got one back with an Evgenii Dadonov goal, his twelfth of the year, helped along by Keegan Kolesar and Alex Pietrangelo. The Golden Knights pulled closer in the third period with a Jack Eichel power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Stephenson and Marchessault. Columbus iced it at 6-4 with an Eric Robinson empty net goal, his seventh of the year, set up by Zach Werenski. Along to St. Louis, as the Blues welcome the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington guard the cages. St. Louis started in the first period with a David Perron power play goal, his seventeenth of the season, powered by Vladimir Tarasenko and Torey Krug. Winnipeg tied it in the second period with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his fifteenth of the year, guided in by Pierre-Luc Dubois and Kyle Connor. The Blues retook the lead on a Tarasenko goal, his twentieth of the season, via Brayden Schenn. The Jets tied it on a Mark Scheifele goal in the third period, his twenty-second of the year, fueled by Blake Wheeler and Logan Stanley. Winnipeg pulled ahead with a Connor goal, his thirty-seventh of the season, with a lone helper from Neal Pionk. St. Louis tied it again on a Schenn goal, his seventeenth of the year, assisted by Jordan Kyrou and Tarasenko. The Jets won 4-3 in overtime with a Dubois goal, his twenty-fourth of the campaign, coming off of Ehlers and Connor. North to Minnesota, as the Wild bring in the Nashville Predators. David Rittich and Kaapo Kahkonen are the backups in goal. Nashville kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Filip Forsberg goal, his thirtieth of the season, made possible by Dante Fabbro and Matt Duchene. Minnesota tied it with a Matt Boldy goal, his twelfth of the year, coming off of Frederick Gaudreau and Kevin Fiala. The Predators retook the lead in the second period with a Roman Josi goal, his sixteenth of the season, courtesy of Philip Tomasino and Nick Cousins. The Wild tied it on a Jordan Greenway goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Marcus Foligno. Nashville regained the lead with a Tomasino goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Cousins and Michael McCarron. The Predators added on in the third period with a Josi power play goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year, powered by Mikael Granlund and Forsberg. Nashville extended the lead as Forsberg scored his second of the game and thirty-first of the season into an empty net, thanks to Duchene and Josi. The Predators iced it at 6-2 with a Cousins empty net goal, his seventh of the year, set up by McCarron and Josi. The three stars were awarded to Josi, Forsberg, and Cousins, while Tomasino, Duchene, and McCarron get the honorable mentions.
Back east, the New York Islanders host the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Ilya Sorokin are the masked men. New York struck first in the first period with a Zach Parise goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Mathew Barzal. Anaheim tied it on a Josh Manson goal, his fourth of the year, via Buddy Robinson. The Islanders retook the lead with a Kyle Palmieri goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Josh Bailey and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. New York added on with an Anders Lee goal, his twenty-first of the year, coming off of Ryan Pulock and Anthony Beauvillier. The Ducks got one back in the second period with an Isac Lundestrom goal, his fourteenth of the season, guided in by Hampus Lindholm and Jamie Drysdale. The Islanders replied on another Palmieri goal, his second of the game and ninth of the year, passed from Scott Mayfield and Bailey. Anaheim got one back in the third period with an Adam Henrique goal, his fourteenth of the campaign, made possible by Troy Terry and Trevor Zegras. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars going to Palmieri, Bailey, and Lee.
Out west, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the Calgary Flames. Daniel Vladar and Darcy Kuemper are between the pipes. Colorado drew first blood in the first period with a Nathan MacKinnon power play goal, his twentieth of the season, powered by Mikko Rantanen and Nazem Kadri. The Avalanche added on in the third period with an unassisted MacKinnon goal, his second of the game and twenty-first of the year. Colorado finished it at 3-0 with a Rantanen empty net goal, his twenty-eighth of the campaign, set up by Darren Helm. The three stars went to Kuemper (46 save shutout), MacKinnon, and Rantanen.
Northwest to Vancouver, as the Canucks bring in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Thatcher Demko tend the twines. Tampa Bay was first to score in the first period with a Victor Hedman goal, his fifteenth of the season, coming off of Pat Maroon and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. The Lightning added on with a Ross Colton goal, his eleventh of the year, via Corey Perry. Vancouver got on the board in the third period with a J.T. Miller goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, assisted by Conor Garland and Tanner Pearson. This stood for a 2-1 final score, with the three stars awarded to Vasilevskiy (35 for 36 in saves), Colton, and Hedman.
Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the Florida Panthers. Spencer Knight and Jonathan Quick patrol the creases. Los Angeles dented the scoreboard in the first period with a Rasmus Kupari goal, his fourth of the season, passed from Quinton Byfield and Jordan Spence. Florida tied it in the second period with an Eetu Luostarinen shorthanded goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Jonathan Huberdeau. The Panthers took the lead with a Brandon Montour goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Patric Hornqvist and Aleksander Barkov. The Kings tied it on a Martin Frk power play goal in the third period, his second of the year, guided in by Sean Durzi. In the shootout, Adrian Kempe and Trevor Moore lifted the Kings to a 3-2 win over Barkov and the Panthers. The three stars were Frk, Kupari, and Barkov.
