NHL 2021-22 - Day 145

There's ten games on this Thursday, beginning with...

The Montreal Canadiens hosting the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Jake Allen are the similarly-named goalies. Dallas opened in the first period with a Radek Faksa goal, his third of the season, fueled by Michael Raffl and Alexander Radulov. Montreal tied it in the second period with a Cole Caufield power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Nick Suzuki and Chris Wideman. The Stars gained the lead on a Jamie Benn goal, his fifteenth of the season, with assists provided by Esa Lindell and John Klingberg. The Canadiens retied it in the third period on a Suzuki goal, his seventeenth of the year, guided in by Caufield and Alexander Romanov. Montreal took the lead with a Corey Schueneman goal, helped along by Rem Pitlick and Laurent Dauphin. Dallas tied it on a Klingberg goal, his third of the season, coming off of Benn and Denis Gurianov. The Stars won 4-3 in overtime with another Klingberg goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year, made possible by Benn and Tyler Seguin. The three stars were Klingberg, Benn, and Suzuki, while Caufield gets an honorable mention.

Along to Toronto, as the Maple Leafs welcome the Carolina Hurricanes. Frederik Andersen and Erik Kallgren are given the starts in goal. Toronto started in the first period with an Ilya Mikheyev goal, his twelfth of the season, fueled by Justin Holl. The Maple Leafs added on in the second period with a Mitchell Marner goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, guided in by John Tavares and Timothy Liljegren. Carolina got on the board in the third period with an Ethan Bear goal, his fourth of the season, via Jesper Fast and Jaccob Slavin. Toronto replied with an Ondrej Kase goal, his fourteenth of the year, assisted by William Nylander and Alexander Kerfoot. The Hurricanes got one back with a Vincent Trocheck goal, his sixteenth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Kallgren (35 for 37 in saves), Kase, and Marner.

Stateside, the Philadelphia Flyers bring in the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Carter Hart are the masked men. Philadelphia led off in the first period with a Travis Sanheim goal, his fifth of the season, going in unassisted. Nashville tied it in the second period with a Tanner Jeannot goal, his twentieth of the year, coming off of Colton Sissons. The Flyers retook the lead with a Cam York power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Travis Konecny and Joel Farabee. Philadelphia added on with a James van Riemsdyk goal, his fourteenth of the year, fueled by Cam Atkinson and Derick Brassard. The Predators got one back with a Philippe Myers goal, guided in by Roman Josi and Nick Cousins. Nashville tied it on a power play goal by Ryan Johansen, his sixteenth of the season, with assists provided by Mikael Granlund and Josi. The Predators took the lead in the third period with a Filip Forsberg goal, his thirty-second of the year, helped along by Josi and Matt Duchene. The Flyers tied it on a Kevin Hayes goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Rasmus Ristolainen. Philadelphia took the lead on a Farabee goal, his twelfth of the year, with helpers from Hayes and Sanheim. This stood for a 5-4 win, with the three stars going to Farabee, Hayes, and Sanheim, while Josi gets an honorable mention.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets host the Washington Capitals. Vitek Vanecek and Joonas Korpisalo are set to start in goal. Washington began in the first period with an Anthony Mantha goal, his fifth of the season, via T.J. Oshie. The Capitals added on with another Mantha goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, going in unassisted. Washington extended the lead in the second period as Martin Fehervary scored his fifth of the season, thanks to Daniel Sprong and John Carlson. Elvis Merzlikins replaced Korpisalo in goal. Columbus got on the board with an Oliver Bjorkstrand power play goal, his twenty-second of the year, powered by Jakub Voracek and Max Domi. The Capitals answered with an Alex Ovechkin power play goal, his thirty-eighth of the season, with assists provided by Conor Sheary and Tom Wilson. The Blue Jackets pulled one back in the third period with a Patrik Laine goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, assisted by Zach Werenski and Andrew Peeke. Washington countered with a Connor McMichael goal, his eighth of the season, going in unassisted. The Capitals padded the lead on a Sheary empty net goal, his sixteenth of the year, set up by Trevor van Riemsdyk and Nicklas Backstrom. Washington continued on a power play goal by Evgeny Kuznetsov, his twentieth of the season, with helpers from Backstrom and Ovechkin. Back east, the New York Rangers welcome the New York Islanders. Ilya Sorokin and Igor Shesterkin tend the twines. The Islanders got going in the second period on an Anders Lee goal, his twenty-third of the season, coming off of Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson on the power play. The Rangers tied it on a Chris Kreider goal, his fortieth of the year, assisted by Alexis Lafreniere and Jacob Trouba on the power play. The Islanders took the lead on a Kyle Palmieri goal in the third period, his eleventh of the season, courtesy of Ryan Pulock and Adam Pelech. The final held at 2-1, with the three stars given to Sorokin (29 for 30 in saves), Palmieri, and Lee.

Out west, the St. Louis Blues bring in the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Ville Husso guard the cages. Pittsburgh struck first in the first period with a Chad Ruhwedel goal, his third of the season, passed from Marcus Pettersson and Radim Zohorna. The Penguins added on in the second period with a Mike Matheson goal, his ninth of the year, via Kasperi Kapanen and John Marino. St. Louis got on the board with a David Perron goal, his eighteenth of the season, guided in by Ivan Barbashev and Colton Parayko. The Blues tied it on a Barbashev goal in the third period, his nineteenth of the year, assisted by Brandon Saad. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Bryan rust had the lone tally for a 3-2 Penguins win. The three stars went to Barbashev, Matheson, and Ruhwedel.

Up in Edmonton, the Oilers host the Buffalo Sabres. Craig Anderson and Mike Smith are the older goalies. Edmonton kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Kailer Yamamoto goal, his fifteenth of the season, made possible by Connor McDavid and Cody Ceci. The Oilers added on with a McDavid goal, his thirty-fourth of the year, assisted by Yamamoto and Evander Kane. Edmonton extended the lead in the second period as Leon Draisaitl scored his fortieth of the season, thanks to Zach Hyman. The Oilers padded the lead on a Darnell Nurse goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Hyman and Ceci. Buffalo got on the board in the third period with a Victor Olofsson goal, his eleventh of the season, via Rasmus Asplund and Casey Mittelstadt. Edmonton replied with a Devin Shore shorthanded goal, his fifth of the year, set up by Tyson Barrie. The Oilers continued with a Barrie power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Warren Foegele and Ryan McLeod. The final was 6-1, and the three stars were given to McDavid, Yamamoto, and Barrie, while Hyman and Ceci get the honorable mentions.

Westward to Vancouver, as the Canucks welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Alex Nedeljkovic and Thatcher Demko are the masked men. Detroit cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Pius Suter goal, his twelfth of the season, via Vladislav Namestnikov. This held for a 1-0 win, with the three stars given to Nedeljkovic (43 save shutout), Suter, and Demko (34 for 35 in saves).

Down in California, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the San Jose Sharks. James Reimer and Cal Petersen protect the nets. Los Angeles dented the scoreboard in the second period with an Anze Kopitar power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Sean Durzi. The Kings added on with a Phillip Danault goal, his eighteenth of the year, guided in by Durzi and Trevor Moore. Los Angeles iced it in the third period at 3-0 with an Adrian Kempe empty net goal, his twenty-sixth of the campaign, going in unassisted. the three stars were Petersen (29 save shutout), Durzi, and Kopitar.

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights host the Florida Panthers. Spencer Knight and Logan Thompson are the backups in goal. Florida drew first blood in the first period with a Carter Verhaeghe goal, his twenty-first of the season, assisted by Eetu Luostarinen and Aaron Ekblad. Vegas tied it on a Brett Howden goal, his ninth of the year, via Michael Amadio and Keegan Kolesar. The Golden Knights took the lead in the second period with an Evgenii Dadonov goal, his thirteenth of the season, fueled by Derrick Pouliot. Vegas added on with a Dadonov power play goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the year, powered by Shea Theodore and Jack Eichel. The Panthers got one back with a Sam Bennett goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, made possible by Anthony Duclair and Ekblad. Florida tied it in the third period on a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his twenty-third of the year, with assists provided by Ekblad and Aleksander Barkov. The Golden Knights retook the lead with a Nicolas Roy goal, his twelfth of the season, going in unassisted. Vegas extended the lead as William Karlsson scored his eighth of the year into an empty net, an unassisted goal. The final was 5-3, and the three stars were Ekblad, Dadonov, and Roy.
