NHL 2021-22 - Day 143

There's eleven games on tonight, beginning with...

The Montreal Canadiens hosting the Arizona Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka and Samuel Montembeault man the nets. Arizona led off in the first period with a Barrett Hayton goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Loui Eriksson. The Coyotes added on with an Anton Stralman goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Riley Nash and Phil Kessel. Montreal got on the board with a Laurent Dauphin goal, his third of the season, coming off of Jeff Petry. Arizona replied with a Nick Ritchie goal, his seventh of the year, helped along by Alex Galchenyuk and Matias Maccelli. The Coyotes extended the lead as Lawson Crouse scored his nineteenth of the season, going in unassisted. Cayden Primeau replaced Montembeault in goal. The Coyotes padded the lead in the second period as Clayton Keller scored his twenty-sixth of the year on the power play, powered by Shayne Gostisbehere and Crouse. The Canadiens got one back with a Cole Caufield power play goal, his tenth of the season, via Chris Wideman and Joel Armia. Montreal got closer with another Caufield goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the year, courtesy of Armia and Petry. The Coyotes iced it at 6-3 with a Nick Schmaltz empty net goal, his eighteenth of the campaign, set up by Keller in the third period. The three stars were Keller, Caufield, and Crouse, while Armia and Petry get the honorable mentions.

Over in Toronto, the Maple Leafs welcome the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Erik Kallgren are the young goalies. Toronto opened in the first period with a Rasmus Sandin goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Mitchell Marner and John Tavares. The Maple Leafs added on with a Tavares goal, his twentieth of the year, fueled by William Nylander and Timothy Liljegren. Toronto extended the lead in the third period on an Ondrej Kase power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Morgan Rielly and Marner. The Maple Leafs iced it at 4-0 with an Ilya Mikheyev empty net goal, his eleventh of the year, set up by Rielly. The three stars were Kallgren (35 save shutout), Tavares, and Marner, while Rielly gets an honorable mention.

In New York, the Rangers bring in the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Alexandar Georgiev are set to start in goal. New York began in the first period with a Jonny Brodzinski goal, via Filip Chytil and Braden Schneider. Anaheim tied it on a Max Comtois goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Troy Terry and Adam Henrique. The Rangers took the lead in the second period on a Mika Zibanejad goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, coming off of Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin. The Ducks tied it with a Cam Fowler power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Henrique. Anaheim took the lead on a Derek Grant goal in the third period, his ninth of the year, fueled by Danny O'Regan. New York tied it again with a Chris Kreider power play goal, his thirty-ninth of the season, with assists provided by Fox and Panarin. The Rangers won 4-3 in overtime with a Fox goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Panarin and Zibanejad. The three stars were Fox, Panarin, and Henrique, while Zibanejad gets an honorable mention.

Down in DC, the Washington Capitals host the New York Islanders. Semyon Varlamov and Vitek Vanecek protect the nets. Washington started in the first period with an Anthony Mantha goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Evgeny Kuznetsov and Conor Sheary. New York tied it in the second period on a Brock Nelson goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, fueled by Zdeno Chara and Noah Dobson. The Islanders took the lead with a Kyle Palmieri goal, his tenth of the season, guided in by Josh Bailey and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. The Capitals tied it in the third period on an Axel Jonsson-Fjallby goal, via Dmitry Orlov. Washington took the lead on an Alex Ovechkin goal, his thirty-seventh of the year, passed from Kuznetsov. New York tied it on an Anders Lee goal, his twenty-second of the season, assisted by Dobson and Nelson. The tie went to a shootout, where T.J. Oshie and Mantha lifted the Capitals 4-3 over Palmieri and the Islanders. The three stars were Kuznetsov, Mantha, and Palmieri, while Nelson and Dobson get the honorable mentions.

Along to Nashville, as the Predators welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins. Casey DeSmith is mismatched with Juuse Saros in goal. Nashville kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Mattias Ekholm goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene. Pittsburgh tied it in the second period on a Jake Guentzel goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, passed from Kris Letang and Sidney Crosby. The Predators retook the lead on a Tanner Jeannot goal, his nineteenth of the season, via Roman Josi and Colton Sissons. Nashville added on with an Eeli Tolvanen goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Josi. The Predators finished it at 4-1 with a Yakov Trenin empty net goal in the third period, his fourteenth of the campaign, set up by Sissons and Josi. The three stars were Josi, Saros (35 for 36 in saves), and Sissons.

Up in Winnipeg, the Jets bring in the Vegas Golden Knights. Laurent Brossoit and Connor Hellebuyck are the former teammates in goal. Winnipeg struck first in the first period with a Blake Wheeler goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Paul Stastny and Mark Scheifele. The Jets added on with a Kyle Connor goal, his thirty-eighth of the year, via Pierre-Luc Dubois and Logan Stanley. Vegas got on the board with a Nicolas Roy goal in the second period, his eleventh of the season, guided in by Zach Whitecloud and William Carrier. Winnipeg replied with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his sixteenth of the year, going in unassisted.  The Jets extended the lead as Stanley scored, an unassisted goal. Logan Thompson replaced Brossoit in goal. Winnipeg padded the lead as Scheifele scored his twenty-third of the season, thanks to Connor and Josh Morrissey. The Golden Knights got one back in the third period with an Alex Pietrangelo power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Nolan Patrick and Dylan Coghlan. Vegas got closer on a Michael Amadio goal, his sixth of the season, helped along by Jake Leschyshyn. The Jets responded with a Morrissey power play goal, his eighth of the year, with assists provided by Connor and Wheeler. Winnipeg continued with an Adam Lowry shorthanded goal, his ninth of the season, set up by Nate Schmidt. The final held at 7-3, with the three stars handed to Connor, Scheifele, and Wheeler, while Morrissey and Stanley get the honorable mentions.

Back stateside, the Chicago Blackhawks host the Boston Bruins. Linus Ullmark and Marc-Andre Fleury are between the pipes. Boston dented the scoreboard in the third period with a Patrice Bergeron goal, his seventeenth of the season, assisted by Brad Marchand and Taylor Hall. Chicago tied it on a Brandon Hagel goal, his twenty-first of the year, coming off of Caleb Jones and Jake McCabe. The Bruins won 2-1 in overtime with a Matt Grzelcyk goal, his third of the campaign, passed from Hall and David Pastrnak. The three stars were Grzcelyk, Hall, and Ullmark (19 for 20 in saves).

Northwest to Edmonton, as the Oilers welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Thomas Greiss and Mikko Koskinen make the starts in goal. Edmonton drew first blood in the first period with a Devin Shore goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Derek Ryan and Philip Broberg. The Oilers added on with a Connor McDavid goal, his thirty-third of the year, via Duncan Keith. Edmonton extended the lead as Zach Hyman scored his twentieth of the season, thanks to Leon Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse. Alex Nedeljkovic replaced Greiss in goal. Detroit got on the board with a Marc Staal goal, his second of the year, guided in by Moritz Seider and Taro Hirose. The Oilers replied with a Kailer Yamamoto power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by McDavid and Tyson Barrie. The Red Wings got one back in the second period with a Sam Gagner goal, his seventh of the year, going in unassisted. Detroit got closer in the third period with a Filip Zadina power play goal, his eighth of the season, with assists provided by Hirose and Nick Leddy. The Red Wings tied it on a Staal goal, his second of the game and third of the year, fueled by Gagne and Adam Erne. Edmonton pulled ahead with an Evander Kane goal, his ninth of the season, helped along by Yamamoto and Evan Bouchard. Detroit tied it on a Lucas Raymond goal, his nineteenth of the year, assisted by Dylan Larkin. The Oilers took the lead back with a Warren Foegele goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Josh Archibald. Edmonton finished it at 7-5 with a Kane empty net goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, set up by Draisaitl and Cody Ceci. The three stars were Kane, McDavid, and Yamamoto, while Draisaitl, Staal, Gagner, and Hirose are given honorable mentions.

Westward to Vancouver, as the Canucks bring in the New Jersey Devils. Nico Daws and Thatcher Demko are in the blue paint. Vancouver was first to score in the first period with a Brad Hunt goal, his second of the season, made possible by J.T. Miller and Tanner Pearson. The Canucks added on with a Nils Hoglander goal, his tenth of the year, guided in by Bo Horvat and Brock Boeser. New Jersey got on the board with a Ryan Graves goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Yegor Sharangovich. The Devils tied it in the second period on a Jack Hughes goal, his nineteenth of the year, passed from Jesper Bratt. Vancouver regained the lead on a Horvat goal, his twenty-first of the season, going in unassisted. The Canucks extended the lead as Pearson scored his thirteenth of the year, thanks to Tyler Myers and Miller. Jon Gillies replaced Daws in goal. New Jersey pulled one back on a Nathan Bastian goal, his eleventh of the season, assisted by Sharangovich and Hughes. Vancouver answered with a shorthanded goal by Horvat, his second of the game and twenty-second of the year, set up by Quinn Hughes and Miller. The Canucks padded the lead on a Juho Lammikko goal, his seventh of the season, courtesy of Luke Schenn and Tyler Motte. The final stood at 6-3, with the three stars given to Horvat, Miller, and Jack Hughes, while Pearson and Sharangovich get honorable mentions.

Down in Los Angeles, the Kings host the Colorado Avalanche. Darcy Kuemper and Jonathan Quick are the veterans in goal. Colorado got going in the first period with a power play goal by Valeri Nichushkin, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche added on in the second period with a J.T. Compher power play goal, his twelfth of the year, with assists provided by Cale Makar and Nichushkin. Colorado extended the lead in the third period as Rantanen scored his twenty-ninth of the season, thanks to Andre Burakovsky. The final remained at 3-0, with the three stars awarded to Kuemper (23 save shutout), Nichushkin, and Rantanen.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks host the Florida Panthers. Spencer Knight and James Reimer are the masked men. San Jose cracked the scoresheet in the first period with a Logan Couture power play goal, his twentieth of the season, powered by Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier. Florida tied it on a shorthanded Jonathan Huberdeau goal, his nineteenth of the year, going in unassisted. The Sharks took the lead back with a Nicolas Meloche goal, his second of the season, passed from Hertl and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The Panthers tied it in the third period with a Frank Vatrano goal, his ninth of the year, courtesy of Noel Acciari. Florida won 3-2 in overtime with another Vatrano goal, his second of the game and tenth of the campaign, helped along by Gustav Forsling and Sam Reinhart. The three stars were Vatrano, Hertl, and Huberdeau.
