NHL 2023-24 - Day 104

It's a four-game Friday slate, beginning with...

The New York Rangers hosting the Vegas Golden Knights. Adin Hill and Igor Shesterkin tend the twines. Vegas led off in the first period with a Sheldon Rempal goal, his second of the season, via Paul Cotter and Nicolas Hague. New York tied it on a Blake Wheeler goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Erik Gustafsson and Adam Fox. The Golden Knights took the lead back in the second period with a Keegan Kolesar goal, his fourth of the season, going in unassisted. Vegas added on with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his twenty-third of the year, passed from Ivan Barbashev and Nicolas Roy. The Golden Knights extended the lead in the third period as Marchessault scored his second of the game and twenty-fourth of the season, with the help of Barbashev and Roy. The Rangers got one back with a Kaapo Kakko goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Jacob Trouba and Wheeler. Vegas iced it at 5-2 with a Marchessault empty net goal to complete his hat trick on his twenty-fifth of the campaign, set up by Barbashev and Brayden McNabb. The three stars were Marchessault, Barbashev, and Roy, while Wheeler gets an honorable mention. 

Along to Pittsburgh, as the Penguins welcome the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Alex Nedeljkovic draw the starts in goal. Pittsburgh began in the first period with a Jake Guentzel power play goal, his twenty-first of the season, powered by Bryan Rust and Erik Karlsson. Florida tied it on an Evan Rodrigues power play goal, his eighth of the year, with assists provided by Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Sam Bennett. The Panthers took the lead in the second period with a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his thirty-sixth of the season, set up by Matthew Tkachuk and Ekman-Larsson. The Penguins retied it in the third period with an Evgeni Malkin goal, his sixteenth of the year, guided in by Sidney Crosby and Rust. The tie went to a shootout, where Aleksander Barkov and Reinhart lifted the Panthers to a 3-2 win over Guentzel and the Penguins. The three stars were Ekman-Larsson, Reinhart, and Rust. 

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Cam Talbot and Alexandar Georgiev guard the cages. Colorado opened in the first period with a Logan O'Connor goal, his twelfth of the season, via Samuel Girard and the goalie Georgiev. The Avalanche added on with an O'Connor goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the year, assisted by Miles Wood and Ross Colton. Colorado extended the lead as Nathan MacKinnon scored his thirty-first of the season, thanks to Jonathan Drouin and Mikko Rantanen. David Rittich replaced Talbot in goal. Los Angeles got on the board in the second period with a Kevin Fiala power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Alex Laferriere and Drew Doughty. The Avalanche responded with a Josh Manson goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Andrew Cogliano. Colorado padded the lead with a Cale Makar power play goal in the third period, his twelfth of the year, with assists provided by MacKinnon and Colton. This stood for a 5-1 win, with the three stars given to O'Connor, MacKinnon, and Colton. 

Finally, the Seattle Kraken host the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and Joey Daccord protect the nets. St. Louis started in the first period with an Oskar Sundqvist power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Brayden Schenn and Torey Krug. Seattle tied it on a Brian Dumoulin goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Adam Larsson and Jaden Schwartz. St. Louis tied it in the third period with a Buchnevich goal, his fifteenth of the year, with a lone assist by Thomas. The Blues won 4-3 in overtime with a Buchnevich goal, his sixteenth of the campaign, made possible by Schenn. The three stars were Buchnevich, Thomas, and Schenn, while Bjorkstrand gets an honorable mention.

NHL 2023-24 - Day 103

It's another nine-game day, beginning with...

The Detroit Red Wings hosting the Philadelphia Flyers. Samuel Ersson and Alex Lyon man the nets. Detroit got going in the second period with a Dylan Larkin goal, his twentieth of the season, made possible by Lucas Raymond. The Red Wings added on with a Moritz Seider goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Raymond. Detroit extended the lead on a shorthanded Andrew Copp goal, his ninth of the season, set up by Michael Rasmussen and Jeff Petry. The final held at 3-0, with the three stars handed to Lyon (30 save shutout), Raymond, and Larkin.

In Montreal, the Canadiens welcome the New York Islanders. Semyon Varlamov and Sam Montembeault are set to start in goal. Montreal began in the first period with a Nick Suzuki power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Juraj Slafkovsky and Sean Monahan. The Canadiens added on with a Cole Caufield goal, his seventeenth of the year, via Suzuki. Montreal extended the lead as Monahan scored his twelfth of the season on the power play, thanks to Michael Matheson and the goalie Montembeault. New York got on the board in the second period with a Bo Horvat power play goal, his twentieth of the year, helped along by Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson. The Islanders got closer in the third period with a Barzal power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, assisted by Dobson and Kyle Palmieri. The Bruins added on in the second period with a Trent Frederic goal, his fourteenth of the year, via Pavel Zacha and Pastrnak. Ottawa got on the board with a Thomas Chabot power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Drake Batherson and Tim Stutzle. Tampa Bay padded the lead on a Mitchell Chaffee goal, fueled by Maxwell Crozier and Emil Martinsen Lilleberg. The Coyotes got one back with a Sean Durzi goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Keller and Nick Schmaltz. The Lightning fired back in the third period with a Luke Glendening goal, his eighth of the season, made possible by Chaffee. Along to Dallas, as the Stars bring in the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Jake Oettinger tend the twines. Dallas struck first in the first period with a Matt Duchene goal, his sixteenth of the season, assisted by Mason Marchment and Tyler Seguin. Anaheim tied it with an Urho Vaakanainen goal, via Isac Lundestrom and Jakob Silfverberg. The Ducks took the lead in the second period with a Troy Terry goal, his twelfth of the year, courtesy of Adam Henrique. The Stars tied it on a Craig Smith goal, his sixth of the season, going in unassisted. Anaheim pulled ahead in the third period with a Silfverberg goal, his fifth of the year, passed from Lundestrom. Dallas tied it on a Miro Heiskanen goal, his fifth of the season, helped along by Thomas Harley and Evgenii Dadonov. The Stars won 4-3 in overtime with a Harley goal, his tenth of the year, coming off of Joe Pavelski. The three stars were Harley, Silfverberg, and Lundestrom.

North to Minnesota, as the Wild host the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Filip Gustavsson protect the nets. Minnesota dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Joel Eriksson Ek goal, his twenty-first of the season, powered by Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello on the power play. Nashville tied it on an Alexandre Carrier goal, his fourth of the year, via Yakov Trenin and Kiefer Sherwood. The Predators took the lead with a Filip Forsberg goal, his twenty-third of the season, made possible by Roman Josi and Ryan O'Reilly. Nashville added on with a Josi goal, his tenth of the year, assisted by Gustav Nyquist and O'Reilly. The Florida Panthers hosting the Arizona Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka and Sergei Bobrovsky are the goalies. Florida opened in the first period with a Matthew Tkachuk goal, his fourteenth of the season, via Carter Verhaeghe and Gustav Forsling. The Panthers added on with a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his thirty-fifth of the year, powered by Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov. Florida extended the lead as Sam Bennett scored his eleventh of the season, thanks to Verhaeghe and Forsling. The Panthers padded the lead in the second period with a Tkachuk goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the year, assisted by Anton Lundell and Verhaege. Florida kept going with a Lundell goal, his fourth of the season, passed from Reinhart and Eetu Luostarinen. The Panthers continued in the third period with a Jonah Gadjovich goal, coming off of Kevin Stenlund. Back stateside, the Boston Bruins bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. Spencer Martin and Linus Ullmark patrol the creases. Seattle shot back with an Alexander Wennberg goal, his eighth of the year, going in unassisted. The Blues pulled ahead with a Saad goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the campaign, helped along by Parayko and Leddy. This made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars given to Saad, Leddy, and Sharangovich, while Parayko gets an honorable mention.

Also in Alberta, the Edmonton Oilers host the Columbus Blue Jackets. Elvis Merzlikins and Stuart Skinner are in the blue paint. Edmonton kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Warren Foegele power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Evander Kane and Darnell Nurse. Columbus tied it with a Dmitri Voronkov goal, his tenth of the year, via Kent Johnson. The Oilers took the lead in the third period with a Kane goal, his fifteenth of the season, assisted by Foegele and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Edmonton added on with a Connor McDavid goal, his seventeenth of the year, passed from Leon Draisaitl and Cody Ceci. The Boston Bruins host the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Jeremy Swayman tend the twines. Boston led off in the first period with a Jakub Lauko goal, his second of the season, via Trent Frederic and Morgan Geekie. Winnipeg tied it on a Vladislav Namestnikov goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Dylan DeMelo and Nikolaj Ehlers. The Bruins retook the lead with a Charlie Coyle goal, his seventeenth of the season, made possible by Hampus Lindholm and Brandon Carlo. Boston added on in the third period with a Jake DeBrusk shorthanded goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The Bruins iced it at 4-1 with a Brad Marchand empty net goal, his twenty-first of the campaign, set up by Coyle and David Pastrnak. The three stars were Coyle, Swayman (20 for 21 in saves), and DeBrusk.

Down in New Jersey, the Devils welcome the Vegas Golden Knights. Logan Thompson and Vitek Vanecek man the nets. New Jersey tied it on a Nico Hischier goal, his thirteenth of the year, coming off of Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt. The Devils took the lead with a Curtis Lazar goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Erik Haula and Nathan Bastian. New Jersey added on in the second period with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his eighteenth of the year, guided in by Simon Nemec and Kevin Bahl. The Golden Knights got one back with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his twenty-first of the season, made possible by Nicolas Roy and Kaedan Korczak. Vegas tied it on a Marchessault goal, his second of the game and twenty-second of the year, fueled by Ivan Barbashev and Roy. Vegas pulled ahead on a Stephenson goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Stone and Alec Martinez. The Golden Knights extended the lead as Roy scored his eighth of the year, thanks to Marchessault. Along to Nashville, as the Predators bring in the Florida Panthers. Anthony Stolarz and Juuse Saros are in the creases. Florida got going in the second period with a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his thirty-fourth of the season, powered by Sam Bennett. Nashville tied it on a Jeremy Lauzon goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Colton Sissons. The Panthers took the lead back with a Carter Verhaeghe goal in the third period, his twenty-fourth of the season, made possible by Bennett. Florida added on with a Brandon Montour empty net goal, his second of the year, set up by Matthew Tkachuk and Bennett. The Panthers extended the lead as Tkachuk scored his thirteenth of the campaign into an empty net, with a lone assist by Verhaeghe. The three stars were given to Bennett, Verhaeghe, and Tkachuk.

Further west, the Arizona Coyotes host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram are the masked men. Pittsburgh tied it on a Lars Eller goal in the second period, his eighth of the year, coming off of Pierre-Olivier Joseph. Arizona extended the lead as Nick Bjugstad scored his tenth of the year, thanks to Liam O'Brien and Jack McBain. The final held at 5-2, with the three stars going to Zucker, Kerfoot, and Bjugstad.

Northwest to Vancouver, as the Canucks welcome the Chicago Blackhawks. Petr Mrazek and Thatcher Demko are the goalies. Vancouver started in the first period with a Pius Suter goal, his ninth of the season, via Andrei Kuzmenko and Noah Juulsen. The Canucks added on with a Quinn Hughes goal, his twelfth of the year, passed from Ilya Mikheyev and Kuzmenko. Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the San Jose Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen and David Rittich are the backups in goal. San Jose dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Fabian Zetterlund goal, his fourteenth of the season, via Mike Hoffman and Tomas Hertl. The Sharks added on with a William Eklund goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Nico Sturm and Jan Rutta. The Kings tied it in the third period with a Quinton Byfield goal, his fourteenth of the year, coming off of Adrian Kempe and Jordan Spence. The Lightning added on with a shorthanded and unassisted Tyler Motte goal, his fourth of the year. Buffalo got on the board in the second period with a Dylan Cozens goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by JJ Peterka and Rasmus Dahlin. Tampa Bay iced it at 3-1 in the third period with a Calvin de Haan empty net goal, his third of the year, set up by Hagel and Paul. St. Louis was first to score in the first period with a Colton Parayko shorthanded goal, his eighth of the season, set up by Robert Thomas. The Blues added on in the second period with a Brayden Schenn goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Justin Faulk and Pavel Buchnevich. St. Louis extended the lead in the third period as Jake Neighbours scored his fourteenth of the campaign on the power play, powered by Thomas and Jordan Kyrou. The final held at 3-0, with the three stars awarded to Binnington (18 save shutout), Parayko, and Thomas.

Northwest to Calgary as the Flames bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Stuart Skinner faces a lesser foe in Dan Vladar in goal. Edmonton drew first blood in the first period with a Ryan McLeod goal, his ninth of the season, via Warren Foegele and Vincent Desharnais. Calgary tied it in the second period with a MacKenzie Weegar goal, his tenth of the year, made possible by Blake Coleman. The Oilers took the lead back with a Sam Gagner goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Dylan Holloway and Cody Ceci in the third period. Edmonton iced it at 3-1 with a Zach Hyman empty net goal, his twenty-eighth of the year, set up by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The three stars were Skinner (26 for 27 in saves), Gagner, and McLeod.

South to Vegas, where the Golden Knights host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Logan Thompson protect the nets. Pittsburgh dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Ryan Graves goal, his third of the season, via Erik Karlsson and Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins added on with a Jake Guentzel goal, his twentieth of the year, assisted by Sidney Crosby and Marcus Pettersson. Vegas got on the board in the third period with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his twentieth of the season, passed from Ivan Barbashev and Alec Martinez. The Golden Knights tied it on a Pavel Dorofeyev goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Chandler Stephenson and Mark Stone. Vegas took the lead with a Brendan Brisson goal, helped along by Barbashev and Alex Pietrangelo. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Barbashev, Brisson, and Thompson (23 for 25 in saves).

Over in San Jose, the Sharks welcome the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Mackenzie Blackwood start in goal. San Jose cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal, his second of the season, assisted by Logan Couture and the goalie Blackwood. Anaheim tied it on a Jackson LaCombe goal, via Adam Henrique. The Sharks retook the lead with a Kyle Burroughs goal, guided in by Tomas Hertl. San Jose added on with a Fabian Zetterlund goal, his thirteenth of the year, passed from Ryan Carpenter and Henry Thrun. The Ducks got one back with a Henrique goal, his twelfth of the season, made possible by Troy Terry and Leo Carlsson. The Sharks replied in the third period with a Jan Rutta goal, coming off of Zetterlund and Mike Hoffman. Anaheim got one back with a Mason McTavish power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Terry. San Jose iced it at 5-3 with a Hertl empty net goal, his fourteenth of the campaign, set up by Nico Sturm. The three stars were Zetterlund, Hertl, and Henrique, while Terry gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the New York Rangers. Jonathan Quick and David Rittich draw the starts in goal. Los Angeles got the first goal in the first period with a Kevin Fiala goal, his eleventh of the season, passed from Trevor Moore. New York tied it in the second period with a Chris Kreider goal, his twenty-first of the year, fueled by Adam Fox and Mika Zibanejad. The Kings took the lead back with a Quinton Byfield goal, his thirteenth of the season, going in unassisted. This held for an eventual 2-1 win, with the three stars given to Rittich (22 for 23 in saves), Byfield, and Fiala.
