NHL 2019-20 - Day 102

We've got eleven games today, beginning with...

The Pittsburgh Penguins hosting the Minnesota Wild. Devan Dubnyk and Tristan Jarry get the starts in goal. Pittsburgh began in the first period with an Evgeni Malkin power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Bryan Rust and Sidney Crosby. The Penguins added on with a Jared McCann goal, his fourteenth of the year, fueled by Dominik Simon and John Marino. Pittsburgh extended the lead as Rust scored his nineteenth of the season in the second period, thanks to Malkin and Dominik Kahun. The Penguins padded the lead on a Malkin power play goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the year, with assists provided by Kris Letang and Crosby. Minnesota got on the board with a Zach Parise goal, his fifteenth of the season, helped along by Kevin Fiala. The Wild got closer in the third period with a Marcus Foligno goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Joel Eriksson Ek and Luke Kunin. Pittsburgh responded with a Crosby goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by McCann. The Penguins kept going with a Simon goal, his fifth of the year, with a lone assist by Crosby. Pittsburgh continued with an Alex Galchenyuk goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Andrew Agozzino and Patric Hornqvist. Minnesota got one back on a Parise goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the year, going in unassisted. This only made it 7-3, the final, with the three stars being Crosby, Malkin, and Parise, with the honorable mentions to Rust, McCann, and Simon.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Elvis Merzlikins are set to start in goal, but Rask left in the first period with an injury. Columbus led off in the first period with an Alexander Wennberg goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Vladislav Gavrikov and Nathan Gerbe. The Blue Jackets added on in the third period with a Kevin Stenlund power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Nick Foligno and Emil Bemstrom. Columbus extended the lead as Riley Nash scored his fourth of the season, going in unassisted. This stood for a 3-0 win, with the three stars awarded to Merzlikins (34 save shutout), Wennberg, and Stenlund.

Back east, the Buffalo Sabres bring in the Vegas Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury and Linus Ullmark are in the creases. Vegas got going in the second period with a Tomas Nosek goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Chandler Stephenson and Shea Theodore. Buffalo tied it on a Kyle Okposo power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Sam Reinhart and Conor Sheary. The Sabres took the lead with a Reinhart power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, with assists provided by Rasmus Ristolainen and Jack Eichel. The Golden Knights tied it in the third period with a Reilly Smith power play goal, his nineteenth of the year, helped along by Theodore and William Karlsson. Buffalo took the lead on an Eichel goal, his twenty-eighth of the season, via Reinhart and Colin Miller. The Sabres iced it at 4-2 with an empty net goal by Curtis Lazar, his fourth of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Reinhart, Eichel, and Theodore.

To Long Island, where the New York Islanders host the Detroit Red Wings. Jimmy Howard and Thomas Greiss play in goal. New York opened in the first period with a Jordan Eberle goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee. The Islanders added on with a Josh Bailey goal, his ninth of the year, via Tom Kuhnhackl and Michael Dal Colle. New York extended the lead as Brock Nelson scored his seventeenth of the season, thanks to Anthony Beauvillier. Calvin Pickard replaced Howard in goal. Detroit got on the board with a Filip Hronek goal, his ninth of the year, with a lone helper by Robby Fabbri. The Islanders shot back with a Lee goal, his fourteenth of the season, guided in by Barzal and Eberle. New York padded the lead on a Nelson goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year, going in unassisted in the second period. The Islanders continued with a Noah Dobson goal, fueled by Ryan Pulock and Leo Komarov. New York struck again with a Beauvillier goal in the third period, his eleventh of the season, made possible by Pulock and Nick Leddy. The Islanders kept going with a Komarov goal, passed from Scott Mayfield. The Red Wings got one back with a Givani Smith goal, set up by Christoffer Ehn and Patrik Nemeth. The final remained at 8-2, with the three stars handed to Nelson, Beauvillier, and Eberle, while Lee, Komarov, Pulock, and Barzal get the honorable mentions.

South to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning welcome the Los Angeles kings. Jonathan Quick and Andrei Vasilevskiy are the veteran goalies. Los Angeles started in the first period with a Jeff Carter goal, his thirteenth of the season, coming off of Kyle Clifford and Derek Forbort. The Kings added on with a Clifford goal, his sixth of the year, with a lone assist from Carter. Tampa Bay got on the board with an Alex Killorn goal, his nineteenth of the season, passed from Alexander Volkov and Kevin Shattenkirk. The Lightning tied it on a Steven Stamkos goal, his eighteenth of the year, courtesy of Anthony Cirelli and Tyler Johnson. Los Angeles took the lead in the third period with a Dustin Brown power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Nikolai Prokhorkin and Sean Walker. Tampa Bay tied it on a Nikita Kucherov goal, his eighteenth of the year, with a lone helper by Cirelli. In the shootout, Brayden Point and Stamkos lifted the Lightning 4-3 over Prokhorkin and the Kings. The three stars were Stamkos, Cirelli, and Prokhorkin, while Clifford and Carter get the honorable mentions. 

Back north, the Toronto Maple Leafs bring in the New Jersey Devils. Louis Domingue and Frederik Andersen draw the starts. Toronto struck first in the first period with a John Tavares goal, his eighteenth of the season, coming off of Rasmus Sandin and William Nylander. The Maple Leafs added on with an unassisted Frederik Gauthier goal, his sixth of the year. Toronto extended the lead with a Zach Hyman power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by Sandin and Jason Spezza. The Maple Leafs padded the lead in the second period as Nylander scored his twentieth of the year, thanks to Pierre Engvall and Tavares. New Jersey got on the board with a Blake Coleman goal, his sixteenth of the season, assisted by Miles Wood and Will Butcher. Toronto shot back with an Auston Matthews power play goal, his thirty-second of the year, with helpers from Mitchell Marner and Tavares. Cory Schneider replaced Domingue in goal. The Maple Leafs continued in the third period with another Matthews goal, his second of the game and thirty-third of the season, made possible by Marner and Hyman. The Devils got one back on a Coleman goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year, helped along by Nikita Gusev and Butcher. New Jersey got closer with a Coleman goal, his eighteenth of the season completing his hat trick with assists provided by Butcher and Travis Zajac. The Devils chipped away with a P.K. Subban power play goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Jesper Bratt and Wayne Simmonds. Toronto iced it at 7-4 with a Matthews empty net goal to complete his hat trick with his thirty-fourth goal of the campaign. The three stars were Matthews, Coleman, and Tavares, while Butcher, Nylander, Hyman, Marner, and Sandin get the honorable mentions.

Also in Ontario, the Ottawa Senators host the Chicago Blackhawks. Robin Lehner and Marcus Hogberg are the Swedish goalies. Ottawa was first to score in the first period with a Connor Brown goal, his eighth of the season, made possible by Dylan DeMelo and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. The Senators added on with a Chris Tierney goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Thomas Chabot and Brown. Chicago got on the board with a Domini Kubalik goal, his seventeenth of the season, helped along by Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks tied it on another Kubalik goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year, fueled by Toews and Slater Koekkoek. Chicago won 3-2 in overtime with a Toews goal, his twelfth of the campaign, assisted by Kane. The three stars belonged to Toews, Kubalik, and Kane, while Brown gets an honorable mention.

Westward to Winnipeg, where the Jets welcome the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Connor Hellebuyck protect the nets. Winnipeg kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Kyle Connor goal, his twenty-third of the season, passed from Sami Niku and Patrik Laine. The Jets added on with a Jack Roslovic goal, his eighth of the year, fueled by Adam Lowry and Carl Dahlstrom. Winnipeg extended the led in the second period as Blake Wheeler scored his fifteenth of the season, with the help of Neal Pionk and Connor on the power play. The Jets iced it at 4-0 in the third period with a Connor goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, set up by Mark Scheifele and Laine. The three stars were handed to Hellebuyck (41 save shutout), Connor, and Laine.

Further west, the Edmonton Oilers bring in the Nashville Predators. Pekka Rinne and Mike Smith are the experienced goalies. Edmonton cracked the scoresheet in the first period on a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal, his thirteenth of the season, courtesy of Leon Draisaitl. Nashville tied it on a Filip Forsberg goal, his sixteenth of the year, passed from Matt Duchene. The Predators took the lead with a Colin Blackwell goal, his second of the season, assisted by Nick Bonino and Yannick Weber. The Oilers retied it on a Draisaitl power play goal, his twenty-sixth of the year, powered by Alex Chiasson and Connor McDavid. Edmonton pulled ahead in the second period with a Josh Archibald goal, his fifth of the season, via McDavid and Oscar Klefbom. The Oilers iced it at 4-2 with a Draisaitl empty net power play goal, his second of the game and twenty-seventh of the year, set up by McDavid. The three stars were Draisaitl, McDavid, and Archibald.

Stateside, the Colorado Avalanche host the Dallas Stars. Ben Bishop and Philipp Grubauer guard the cages. Colorado drew first blood in the first period with a Nikita Zadorov goal, his second of the season, via Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche added on with a Gabriel Landeskog goal, his  of the year, passed from MacKinnon and Ryan Graves. Dallas got on the board with a power play goal by Denis Gurianov, his eleventh of the season, powered by Roope Hintz and John Klingberg. The Stars tied it on a Jason Dickinson goal, his sixth of the year, assisted by Andrew Cogliano and Blake Comeau. Dallas won 3-2 with an Esa Lindell goal in overtime, his third of the campaign, coming off of Joe Pavelski. The three stars were Lindell, Dickinson, and Bishop (41 for 43 in saves).

Finally, the Arizona Coyotes host the San Jose Sharks. Aaron Dell and Adin Hill are the backups in goal. Arizona dented the scoreboard in the first period with a Phil Kessel goal, his tenth of the season, courtesy of Derek Stepan. The Coyotes added on with a Kessel power play goal in the second period, his second of the game and eleventh of the year, powered by Christian Dvorak and Conor Garland. San Jose got on the board with a Kevin Labanc goal, his eleventh of the season, via Evander Kane. The Sharks tied it on a Timo Meier goal, his sixteenth of the year, coming off of Patrick Marleau and Antti Suomela. Arizona retook the lead with a Taylor Hall goal, his eleventh of the season, passed from Jordan Oesterle and Garland. The Coyotes extended the lead as Lawson Crouse scored his eleventh of the year in the third period, thanks to Stepan and Kessel. San Jose pulled back on a Kane power play goal, his nineteenth of the season, with assists provided by Labanc and Erik Karlsson. Arizona replied with a Garland empty net goal, his sixteenth of the year, set up by Hall and Jason Demers. The Coyotes iced it at 6-3 with a Hall empty net goal, his twelfth of the campaign, with a lone helper from Crouse and Stepan. The three stars were Kessel, Garland, and Hall, whileKane, Labanc, Stepan, and Crouse get the honorable mentions.
