NHL 2019-20 - Day 106

There's twelve games today, including four matinees. Leading off...

The New York Islanders host the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby and Semyon Varlamov are the former teammates in goal. Washington opened in the first period with an Alex Ovechkin goal, his thirty-second of the season, made possible by Nicklas Backstrom. New York tied it on a Brock Nelson goal, his nineteenth of the year, via Anthony Beauvillier and Josh Bailey. The Islanders took the lead with a Casey Cizikas goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Beauvillier and Devon Toews. New York added on with a Jordan Eberle power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Mathew Barzal and Toews. The Islanders extended the lead as Toews scored his fourth of the season, thanks to Leo Komarov and Derick Brassard. The Capitals got one back in the third period with a Carl Hagelin goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Richard Panik and Nick Jensen. Washington got closer with an Ovechkin goal, his second of the game and thirty-third of the season, helped along by John Carlson. The Capitals tied it as Tom Wilson scored his fourteenth of the year, with the help of Dmitry Orlov and Carlson. Washington surged ahead with a Jakub Vrana goal, his twenty-second of the season, going in unassisted. The Capitals iced it with an Ovechkin empty net goal to complete his hat trick on his thirty-fourth of the year, set up by T.J. Oshie and Orlov. The three stars of the 6-4 game were Ovechkin, Orlov, and Carlson, while Toews and Beauvillier get the honorable mentions.

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and Philipp Grubauer are the goalies. Colorado started in the first period with a Nathan MacKinnon goal, his twenty-eighth of the season, assisted by Samuel Girard and Mikko Rantanen. St. Louis tied it on a David Perron power play goal, his twenty-first of the year, powered by Ryan O'Reilly and Alex Pietrangelo. The Blues took the lead in the second period with an Oskar Sundqvist goal, his eleventh of the season, made possible by O'Reilly and Zach Sanford. The Avalanche retied it on a Tyson Jost goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Andre Burakovsky and Ian Cole. Colorado pulled ahead with an unassisted Cale Makar goal, his eleventh of the season. The Avalanche added on with a Burakovsky goal, his fourteenth of the year, passed from Nikita Zadorov and Cole. St. Louis pulled back with a Pietrangelo goal, his thirteenth of the season, guided in by Perron and Sanford. Colorado capped it at 5-3 with a Gabriel Landeskog empty-net goal, his thirteenth of the year, set up by Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and MacKinnon. Up in Edmonton, the Oilers bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Antti Raanta and Mike Smith draw the starts in goal. Edmonton led off in the first period with a Josh Archibald shorthanded goal, his sixth of the season, set up by Riley Sheahan and Kris Russell. The Oilers added on with a Sam Gagner goal, his second of the year, with a lone assist by Sheahan. Edmonton extended the lead as Kailer Yamamoto scored his third of the season, thanks to Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers padded the lead on a Connor McDavid power play goal, his twenty-sixth of the year, powered by Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins in the second period. Edmonton continued with a Joakim Nygard goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Sheahan. The Senators padded the lead in the third period with a Colin White goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Mikkel Boedker and Tyler Ennis. At the regular time, the Detroit Red Wings welcome the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Jimmy Howard are the veteran goalies. Florida cracked the scoresheet in the first period with an Evgenii Dadonov goal, his twenty-first of the season, made possible by Jonathan Huberdeau and Josh Brown. The Panthers added on with a Mark Pysyk goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Aaron Ekblad and Frank Vatrano. The Canadiens added on with an Ilya Kovalchuk goal, his seventh of the year, assisted by Phillip Danault. Montreal extended the lead as Joel Armia scored his thirteenth of the season, thanks to Brett Kulak and Max Domi. Vegas got on the board in the second period with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his sixteenth of the season, fueled by Reilly Smith and Shea Theodore. Back stateside, the Philadelphia Flyers host the Los Angeles Kings. Jack Campbell and Brian Elliott are in the creases. Philadelphia struck first in the first period with a Travis Konency goal, his sixteenth of the season, courtesy of Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk. The Flyers added on in the second period with another Konecny goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year, via van Riemsdyk and Sean Couturier. Philadelphia extended the lead as Joel Farabee scored his fifth of the season on the power play, powered by Matt Niskanen and Travis Sanheim. Los Angeles got on the board in the third period with an unassisted Dustin Brown goal, his tenth of the year. The Flyers replied with a van Riemsdyk power play goal, his thirteenth of the campaign, with assists provided by Giroux and Kevin Hayes. This made it 4-1, the final, with the three stars going to van Riemsdyk, Konecny, and Elliott (34 for 35 in saves), while Giroux gets an honorable mention.

To Canada again, as the Toronto Maple Leafs welcome the Chicago Blackhawks. Corey Crawford and Frederik Andersen are between the pipes. Chicago kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Drake Caggiula goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Dominik Kubalik and Connor Murphy. The Blackhawks added on with a Jonathan Toews goal, his thirteenth of the year, fueled by Erik Gustafsson and Alex Nylander. Chicago extended the lead as Brandon Saad scored his twelfth of the season, thanks to Patrick Kane and Ryan Carpenter. Toronto got on the board in the second period with a William Nylander power play goal, his twenty-second of the year, powered by Mitchell Marner and Tyson Barrie. The Blackhawks countered with a Toews goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the season, helped along by Caggiula and Gustafsson. Chicago padded the lead on a Kubalik goal, his nineteenth of the year, with helpers from Toews and Slater Koekkoek. South to Columbus, where the Blue Jackets bring in the New Jersey Devils. Cory Schneider and Elvis Merzlikins are the goalies. Columbus drew first blood in the first period with a Cam Atkinson goal, his eleventh of the season, fueled by David Savard and Alexander Wennberg. The Blue Jackets added on in the second period with another Atkinson goal, his second of the game and twelfth of the year, via Emil Bemstrom and Wennberg. Columbus extended the lead on an unassisted Jakob Lilja goal, his second of the season. The Blue Jackets padded the lead as Nick Foligno scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Vladislav Gavrikov. MacKenzie Blackwood replaced Schneider in goal. Columbus continued with a Wennberg goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Atkinson and Zach Werenski. Down to Nashville, as the Predators host the Buffalo Sabres. Linus Ullmark and Pekka Rinne occupy the blue paint. Buffalo dented the scoreboard in the first period with a Sam Reinhart goal, his seventeenth of the season, via Rasmus Dahlin and Jake McCabe. Nashville tied it in the second period with a Ryan Johansen goal, his tenth of the year, passed from Roman Josi. The Predators took the lead with a Craig Smith power play goal in the third period, his eleventh of the season, powered by Kyle Turris and Mattias Ekholm. The final remained at 2-1, with the three stars being Rinne (30 for 31 in saves), Smith, and Ullmark (35 for 37 in saves).

North again to Minnesota, where the Wild welcome the Dallas Stars. Anton Khudobin and Alex Stalock receive the starting nods in goal. Minnesota got going in the first period with a Jared Spurgeon goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Mats Zuccarello and Ryan Suter. The Wild added on with a Carson Soucy goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Jason Zucker. Minnesota extended the lead in the second period with a Zucker power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Kevin Fiala and Jonas Brodin. The Wild chased Khudobin with a Ryan Donato goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Ryan Hartman. Ben Bishop came on in relief. Minnesota padded the lead as Zuccarello scored his twelfth of the season, thanks to Zucker and Matt Dumba. The Wild continued in the third period with a Zach Parise power play goal, his eighteenth of the year, with assists provided by Suter and Eric Staal. Minnesota kept going with a Hartman power play goal, his sixth of the campaign, with helpers from Jordan Greenway and Donato.
