NHL 2022-23 - Day 66

Another 12-game day is on Thursday, beginning with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the Los Angeles Kings. Pheonix Copley and Linus Ullmark are the goalies. Boston got going in the second period with a Taylor Hall goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of Matt Grzelcyk and Charlie Coyle. The Bruins added on with a Brad Marchand power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy. Los Angeles got on the board in the third period with an Adrian Kempe goal, his eleventh of the season, via Kevin Fiala and Anze Kopitar. The Kings tied it on Kempe's second goal of the game and twelfth of the year, guided in by Fiala and Drew Doughty on the power play. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Kempe, Gabriel Vilardi and Trevor Moore lifted the Kings to a 3-2 win over Coyle, Jake DeBrusk, and the Bruins. The three stars were Kempe, Fiala, and Coyle.

To Montreal, as the Canadiens welcome the Anaheim Ducks. Lukas Dostal and Jake Allen are set to start in goal. Anaheim kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Troy Terry power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by Trevor Zegras and Mason McTavish. The Ducks added on with a John Klingberg goal, his second of the year, guided in by Zegras and Adam Henrique. Montreal got on the board in the third period with a Cole Caufield power play goal, his seventeenth of the season, with assists provided by Kirby Dach and Jonathan Drouin. The Canadiens tied it on a Caufield goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year, passed from Johnathan Kovacevic and Jordan Harris. Anaheim took the lead back with another Klingberg goal, his second of the game and third of the season, helped along by Frank Vatrano and Ryan Strome. The Ducks extended the lead with a Henrique empty net goal, his ninth of the year, set up by McTavish. Anaheim iced it at 5-2 with a Vatrano empty net goal, his fifth of the campaign, thanks to Jakob Silfverberg. The three stars were Klingberg, Zegras, and Henrique, while Caufield, Vatrano, and McTavish get the honorable mentions.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning bring in the Columbus Blue Jackets. Daniil Tarasov and Brian Elliott are the backups in goal. Tampa Bay led off in the first period with a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare goal, coming off of Vladislav Namestnikov and Victor Hedman. Columbus tied it in the second period with a Kirill Marchenko goal, his second of the season, assisted by Cole Sillinger and Erik Gudbranson. The Lightning took the lead in the third period with a Brayden Point goal, his sixteenth of the year, courtesy of Brandon Hagel and Nikita Kucherov. Tampa Bay added on with a Hagel goal, his ninth of the season, made possible by Kucherov and Hedman. The Lightning iced it at 4-1 with a Hagel empty net goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, set up by Kucherov and Ian Cole. The three stars were Hagel, Kucherov, and Hedman.

Also in Florida, the Panthers host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Sergei Bobrovsky are the masked men. Florida opened in the first period with a Ryan Lomberg goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Eric Staal and Brandon Montour. Pittsburgh tied it in the second period with a Kris Letang shorthanded goal, his second of the year, set up by Bryan Rust and Ryan Poehling. The Penguins took the lead on a power play goal by Jake Guentzel, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Evgeni Malkin and Letang. Pittsburgh added on with a Malkin power play goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell. The Panthers got one back on a Sam Reinhart goal, his ninth of the season, helped along by Carter Verhaeghe. The Penguins iced it at 4-2 with a Guentzel empty net goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the year, set up by Crosby and Brock McGinn. The three stars went to Guentzel, Letang, and Malkin, while Crosby gets an honorable mention.

Back north, the New Jersey Devils welcome the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Vitek Vanecek are in the blue paint. New Jersey began in the first period with a Jack Hughes power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Dougie Hamilton. Philadelphia tied it in the second period with a power play goal by Scott Laughton, his fifth of the year, with assists provided by Travis Sanheim and Noah Cates. The Flyers took the lead in the third period with a Travis Konecny goal, his twelfth of the season, via Cates. The final held at 2-1, with the three stars going to Hart (48 for 49 in saves), Cates, and Konecny.

Over in New York, the Rangers bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Matt Murray and Igor Shesterkin guard the cages. New York started in the first period with a Filip Chytil power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafreniere. Toronto tied it on a Michael Bunting goal, his seventh of the year, via David Kampf and Conor Timmins. The Rangers took the lead in the second period with a Jimmy Vesey goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Vincent Trocheck and K'Andre Miller. New York added on with another Vesey goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, going into an empty net set up by Jacob Trouba and Trocheck. The final was 3-1, and the three stars were Vesey, Trocheck, and Shesterkin (22 for 23 in saves).

Next up, the Washington Capitals host the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Charlie Lindgren protect the nets. Washington dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Conor Sheary goal, his tenth of the season, fueled by Alex Ovechkin and Dylan Strome. Dallas tied it in the third period with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski. The Stars took the lead with a Colin Miller goal, his second of the season, via Ryan Suter and Mason Marchment. This stood for a 2-1 win, with the three stars being Oettinger (45 for 46 in saves), Miller, and Benn.

South to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the Seattle Kraken. Philipp Grubauer and Pyotr Kochetkov are in the creases. Carolina struck first in the first period with an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his sixteenth of the season, going in unassisted. The Hurricanes added on with a Derek Stepan goal, coming off of Jack Drury and Calvin de Haan. Carolina extended the lead in the second period as Stefan Noesen scored his fourth of the year on a penalty shot. Seattle got on the board with a Ryan Donato goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Carson Soucy and Yanni Gourde. The Kraken got closer in the third period with a Daniel Sprong goal, his seventh of the year, via Brandon Tanev and Will Borgen. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars being Noesen, Stepan, and Svechnikov.

Northwest to Winnipeg, as the Jets bring in the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Connor Hellebuyck tend the twines. Nashville drew first blood in the first period with a Filip Forsberg goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Mikael Granlund and Matt Duchene. Winnipeg tied it on a Dylan DeMelo goal, courtesy of Kyle Connor and Josh Morrissey. The Jets won 2-1 in overtime with a Connor goal, his twelfth of the year, passed from Adam Lowry. The three stars were Connor, Hellebuyck (25 for 26 in saves), and DeMelo.

Back stateside, the Chicago Blackhawks host the Vegas Golden Knights. Logan Thompson faces a lesser foe in Arvid Soderblom in goal. Vegas was first to score in the first period with a Chandler Stephenson power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Mark Stone and Jonathan Marchessault. The Golden Knights added on in the second period with a Reilly Smith shorthanded goal, his thirteenth of the year, set up by William Karlsson. Vegas extended the lead in the third period as Phil Kessel scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Daniil Miromanov and Karlsson. Chicago got on the board with a Taylor Raddysh goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Jonathan Toews and Seth Jones. The Golden Knights iced it at 4-1 with a Smith empty net goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the campaign, coming off of Marchessault and Brayden Pachal. The three stars belonged to Smith, Karlsson, and Marchessault.

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alexandar Georgiev draw the starts. Buffalo cracked the scoresheet with a Tage Thompson goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, assisted by Casey Mittelstadt and Kale Clague. The Sabres added on with an Alex Tuch power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, powered by Rasmus Dahlin and Thompson. Buffalo extended the lead as Dahlin scored his tenth of the season, thanks to Tyson Jost and Victor Olofsson. Colorado got on the board in the third period with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his twentieth of the year, guided in by Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen. The Avalanche got closer with an Evan Rodrigues goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Nichushkin and Cale Makar. The Sabres iced it at 4-2 with a Dylan Cozens empty net goal, his eleventh of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Thompson, Dahlin, and Nichushkin.

Finally, the Edmonton Oilers bring in the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and Stuart Skinner receive the starting nods in goal. Edmonton got the first goal in the first period as Zach Hyman scored his fourteenth of the season on the power play, powered by Leon Draisaitl and Tyson Barrie. St. Louis tied it with a Jordan Kyrou goal, his eleventh of the year, guided in by Pavel Buchnevich and Brayden Schenn. The Oilers took the lead with a Connor McDavid power play goal in the second period, his twenty-seventh of the season, with assists provided by Barrie and the goalie Skinner. Edmonton added on in the third period with a Kailer Yamamoto goal, his second of the year, passed from Barrie and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Blues got one back with a Robert Thomas goal, his seventh of the season, helped along by Ivan Barbashev and Kyrou. St. Louis tied it on a shorthanded Vladimir Tarasenko goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Kyrou. The tie went to a shootout, where Kyrou had the lone tally for a 4-3 Blues win. The three stars were Kyrou, Barrie, and Tarasenko.
