NHL 2022-23 - Day 68

There's 13 games on today, beginning with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets. Daniil Tarasov and Jeremy Swayman are the goalies. Boston began in the first period with a David Pastrnak power play goal, his twentieth of the season, powered by Hampus Lindholm and Brad Marchand. Columbus tied it in the second period with a Boone Jenner power play goal, his eleventh of the year, courtesy of Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine. The Bruins retook the lead with a David Krejci power play goal, his ninth of the season, with assists provided by Charlie McAvoy and Taylor Hall. Boston added on in the third period with a Hall goal, his thirteenth of the year, fueled by Pastrnak and Krejci. The Bruins extended the lead as Tomas Nosek scored his third of the season, thanks to Derek Forbort and Craig Smith. The Blue Jackets got one back with a Laine power play goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Marcus Bjork and Gaudreau. The final held from here at 4-2, with the three stars given to Hall, Krejci, and Pastrnak, while Laine and Gaudreu get the honorable mentions. 

Over in Detroit, the Red Wings welcome the Ottawa Senators. Cam Talbot and Ville Husso protect the nets. Detroit led off in the first period with a Joe Veleno goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Dominik Kubalik and Elmer Soderblom. Ottawa tied it on a Drake Batherson goal, his ninth of the year, assisted by Alex DeBrincat and Shane Pinto. The Red Wings took the lead back with an Adam Erne goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Jake Walman and Pius Suter. The Senators tied it again with a Thomas Chabot power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by DeBrincat and Brady Tkachuk. Ottawa pulled ahead with a Batherson power play goal, his second of the game and tenth of the season, with helpers provided by Tkachuk and DeBrincat in the second period. Detroit tied it with a Filip Hronek power play goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by David Perron and Lucas Raymond. The Senators pulled ahead in the third period with a Claude Giroux power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, going in unassisted. Ottawa added on with a Tyler Motte shorthanded goal, his third of the year, set up by Parker Kelly. The Senators iced it at 6-3 with an Austin Watson shorthanded empty net goal, his second of the campaign, with a lone assist by Giroux. The three stars were handed to Batherson, DeBrincat, and Giroux, while Tkachuk get the honorable mentions. 

Westward to Edmonton, as the Oilers bring in the Anaheim Ducks. Lukas Dostal and Stuart Skinner are the young goalies. Edmonton started in the first period with a Darnell Nurse goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Derek Ryan and Evan Bouchard. Anaheim tied it on a Sam Carrick goal, via Mason McTavish and Jayson Megna. The Ducks took the lead with a Cam Fowler power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by McTavish and Adam Henrique. Anaheim added on in the second period with a Ryan Strome goal, his eighth of the season, going in unassisted. The Oilers got one back on a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, with assists provided by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Edmonton tied it with a power play goal by McDavid, his twenty-eighth of the season, fueled by Draisaitl and Tyson Barrie. The Ducks regained the lead with a John Klingberg goal, his fourth of the year, helped along by Frank Vatrano and Strome. The final held at 4-3, with the three stars given to Strome, McDavid, and McTavish, while Draisaitl gets an honorable mention.

Back east, the Montreal Canadiens host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Jake Allen are set to start in goal. Tampa Bay kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Brandon Hagel goal, his eleventh of the season, guided in by Ian Cole and Erik Cernak. The Lightning added on with a Nick Paul goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Nick Perbix and Steven Stamkos. Tampa Bay extended the lead as Anthony Cirelli scored, thanks to Corey Perry and Nikita Kucherov on the power play in the second period. The Lightning padded the lead on a Hagel power play goal, his second of the game and twelfth of the season, powered by Victor Hedman and Stamkos. Montreal got on the board in the third period with a Nick Suzuki goal, his fifteenth of the year, fueled by Kaiden Guhle. Tampa Bay replied with a Kucherov goal, his twelfth of the campaign, helped along by Hagel. The three stars of the 5-1 game were Hagel, Kucherov, and Stamkos.

Down in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the New York Rangers. Jaroslav Halak and Carter Hart draw the starts in goal. Philadelphia opened in the first period with a James van Riemsdyk goal, his fifth of the season, via Owen Tippett. New York tied it on an Artemi Panarin goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by Barclay Goodrow and Mika Zibanejad. The Rangers pulled ahead in the second period with a K'Andre Miller goal, his second of the season, going in unassisted. New York added on with a Goodrow goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Zibanejad and Panarin. The Flyers got one back with a Scott Laughton shorthanded goal, his sixth of the season, an unassisted goal. The Rangers answered in the third period with a Jimmy Vesey goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Vincent Trocheck. Philadelphia got one back with a Morgan Frost goal, his fifth of the season, with helpers from Travis Sanheim and Cam York. New York replied with a Jacob Trouba shorthanded empty net goal, set up by Miller. The Rangers iced it at 6-3 with a Ryan Lindgren empty net goal, going in unassisted. The three stars were Goodrow, Panarin, and Zibanejad, while Miller gets an honorable mention.

To DC, as the Washington Capitals bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ilya Samsonov and Charlie Lindgren patrol the creases. Washington was first to score in the first period with an Erik Gustafsson goal, made possible by Sonny Milano and John Carlson. Toronto tied it on a William Nylander goal, his eighteenth of the season, assisted by Auston Matthews and Alexander Kerfoot. The Capitals retook the lead with a Trevor van Riemsdyk goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Anthony Mantha and Milano. Washington added on with a Gustafsson goal, his second of the game, passed from Evgeny Kuznetsov and Milano. The Maple Leafs got one back with a Matthews goal, his sixteenth of the season, helped along by Conor Timmins and T.J. Brodie. The Capitals replied in the third period with a Garnet Hathaway goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Nick Jensen. Washington extended the lead as Gustafsson completed his hat trick, with the help of Kuznetsov and Aliaksei Protas. The final was 5-2, with the three stars awarded to Gustafsson, Milano, and Matthews, while Kuznetsov gets an honorable mention.

South to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes host the Dallas Stars. Scott Wedgewood and Antti Raanta receive the starting nods in goal. Carolina struck first in the first period with a Stefan Noesen power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Teuvo Teravainen and Brent Burns. The Hurricanes added on with an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his seventeenth of the year, fueled by Jalen Chatfield and Calvin de Haan. Dallas got on the board with a power play goal by Joe Pavelski, his eleventh of the season, with assists provided by Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen. The Stars tied it in the second period with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, helped along by Heiskanen and Robertson. Carolina pulled ahead with a Teravainen power play goal, coming off of Martin Necas and Burns. The Hurricanes extended the lead in the third period as Seth Jarvis scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Brady Skjei. Dallas got one back with a Tyler Seguin goal, his sixth of the year, made possible by Colin Miller. The Stars tied it on a Jani Hakanpaa goal, his fourth of the season, courtesy of Robertson. Carolina won 5-4 in overtime with a Necas goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Svechnikov. The three stars were Necas, Svechnikov, and Teravainen, while Robertson, Burns, and Heiskanen get the honorable mentions.

Back north, the New Jersey Devils welcome the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Akira Schmid play in goal. Florida drew first blood in the first period with a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Aleksander Barkov and Aaron Ekblad. The Panthers added on in the second period with a Gustav Forsling goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Zac Dalpe and Aleksi Heponiemi. New Jersey got on the board with a John Marino goal, his third of the season, assisted by Jack Hughes and Erik Haula. Florida fired back with a Reinhart goal, his eleventh of the year, fueled by Ekblad and Eetu Luostarinen. The Devils answered with a Haula goal in the third period, his second of the season, helped along by Michael McLeod and Dougie Hamilton. The Panthers responded with an empty net goal by Carter Verhaeghe goal, his sixteenth of the year, set up by Grigori Denisenko and Brandon Montour. The final was 4-2, and the three stars were Reinhart, Haula, and Ekblad.

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Alexandar Georgiev guard the cages. Colorado got going in the second period with a Mikko Rantanen power play goal, his twenty-first of the season, powered by Cale Makar. The Avalanche added on with an Alex Newhook goal, his seventh of the year, assisted by Evan Rodrigues and Valeri Nichushkin. Nashville got on the board in the third period with a Matt Duchene goal, his seventh of the season, courtesy of Nino Niederreiter. Colorado iced it at 3-1 with a Makar empty net goal, his seventh of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Georgiev (25 for 26 in saves), Makar, and Newhook.

Along to Arizona, where the Coyotes host the Buffalo Sabres. Craig Anderson and Connor Ingram man the nets. Arizona led off in the first period with a Shayne Gostisbehere power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Jakob Chychrun and Nick Schmaltz. Buffalo tied it on a Jeff Skinner power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, with assists provided by Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch. The Coyotes took the lead back in the second period with a Barrett Hayton goal, going in unassisted. The Sabres tied it again with a Skinner goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the season, assisted by Rasmus Dahlin and Thompson. Buffalo pulled ahead in the third period with a Thompson power play goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, passed from Tuch and Dahlin. The Sabres added on with a Tyson Jost empty net goal, his second of the season, set up by Tuch. Buffalo iced it at 5-2 with a Kyle Okposo empty net goal, his third of the year, with a helper from Skinner. The three stars were given to Thompson, Skinner, and Tuch, while Dahlin gets an honorable mention.

Northwest to Vancouver, as the Canucks welcome the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Spencer Martin are between the pipes. Winnipeg began in the first period with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Pierre-Luc Dubois and Josh Morrissey. The Jets added on in the second period with a Kyle Capobianco goal, via Sam Gagner and Dubois. Winnipeg extended the lead as Neal Pionk scored his fifth of the year, thanks to Brenden Dillon and Cole Perfetti. The Jets padded the lead on a Gagner goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Dubois and Kyle Connor. Winnipeg continued with an Axel Jonsson-Fjallby goal, his second of the year, guided in by Dylan Samberg. Vancouver got on the board with a Bo Horvat power play goal, his twenty-second of the campaign, with assists provided by Quinn Hughes and Conor Garland. The final was 5-1, with the three stars being Dubois, Connor, and Gagner.

Backtracking to Vegas, as the Golden Knights bring in the New York Islanders. Semyon Varlamov and Logan Thompson are the masked men. New York opened in the first period with an Anders Lee goal, his tenth of the season, guided in by Anthony Beauvillier and Robin Salo. Vegas tied it in the second period with a Reilly Smith power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, going in unassisted. The Islanders retook the lead with a Hudson Fasching goal, his second of the season, coming off of Sebastian Aho and Matt Martin. New York added on with a Simon Holmstrom goal, courtesy of Zach Parise and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. The Golden Knights got one back in the third period with Smith's second power play goal of the game and sixteenth of the year, powered by Alex Pietrangelo and Chandler Stephenson. The Islanders replied with a Brock Nelson empty net goal, his fifteenth of the campaign, going in unassisted. New York iced it at 5-2 with a Parise empty net goal, his tenth of the campaign, set up by Nelson and Pageau. The three stars went to Smith, Parise, and Nelson, while Pageau gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the San Jose Sharks. James Reimer and Pheonix Copley are in the blue paint. Los Angeles started in the first period with a Phillip Danault power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Drew Doughty and the goalie Copley. San Jose tied it with a Timo Meier power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, with assists provided by Logan Couture and Erik Karlsson. The Sharks took the lead with a Kevin Labanc goal, his seventh of the season, passed from Meier. The Kings retied it on a Jaret Anderson-Dolan goal, his third of the year, guided in by Mikey Anderson and Gabriel Vilardi. The tie went to a shootout, where Kevin Fiala and Trevor Moore lifted the Kings to a 3-2 win over Labanc and the Sharks. The three stars were Labanc, Meier, and Anderson-Dolan.
