The last game of the first round sees the Washington Capitals hosting the Carolina Hurricanes. Petr Mrazek and Braden Holtby man the nets. Washington began in the first period with an Andre Burakovsky goal, going in unassisted. The Capitals added on with a Tom Wilson goal, his third of the postseason, coming off of Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov. Carolina got on the board in the second period with a Sebastian Aho shorthanded goal, his second of the playoffs, set up by Brett Pesce and Jaccob Slavin. Washington replied with an Evgeny Kuznetsov goal, via Carl Hagelin. The Hurricanes got one back with a Teuvo Teravainen goal, his third of the postseason, made possible by Pesce and Brock McGinn. Carolina tied it on a Jordan Staal goal in the third period, his third of the playoffs, fueled by Slavin. The Hurricanes won 4-3 in double overtime with a McGinn goal, his second of the postseason, with helpers from Justin Williams and Slavin, the latter earning a sock trick. The three stars were Slavin, McGinn, and Pesce. The Hurricanes won the series 4-3 and will face the New York Islanders in the second round.
